David, as I get ready to devour a turkey drumstick in a few hours lol, ( is a goose’s drumstick desirable to you, I want to make you temporarily the Jet GM. Your time as Gm starts with free agency and ends opening day. I understand there are restrictions because we can’t foretell what other teams are going to due, but my questions to you Mr GM to what you would do are
1) Next years starting QB Zach Garoppolo or maybe Derek Carr if he is released or would you trade for him. Garoppolo gets hurt a lot. Zach a backup to either?
2) Keep Becton, Vera Tucker at tackle with Mitchell, is Herbig the answer at guard. Dump Becton
3) presently, the Jets have no multiple high picks, yes I can see Douglas trading down. What positions would you might draft after your decisions on number 1 and 2 are settled.
Well, tally ho. After the turkey a little surprise. It’s not pumpkin pie but spotted dick lol. I’m sure that will raise some eyebrows with your American readers
Who doesn't love to play Thanksgiving GM! I'll be having chicken personally as I've never been a huge Turkey fan.
Here's my instant thoughts on your points though.
1) I have to admit I like the thought of Jimmy G and with him set to be a free agent I wouldn't mind getting him through the door if it was on a similar deal to his one in San Francisco which was 1 year and $7 million. Derek Carr is an interesting one as I remember DJ over at the Daily News saying Carr was Zach's ceiling, wonder if that's changed now. If neither are available I'd be tempted to get Minshew and put them in an open competition, winner starts, loser backs up.
2) Becton and AVT would be a nice tackle duo, but I'm not sure if I'm ready to trust Becton to stay healthy. Brown has a $11,576,000 cap hit next year so either he's slated to start or he'll be an expensive backup. Herbig would be one of the first guys I re-sign this offseason. I liked him in Philadelphia and think he's done a fine job for us this year.
3) The draft is going to be an interesting one, I don't know if we need to go back to the offensive line with McGovern slated to be a free agent and a lot of questions at tackle. I'd be keen to solidify the middle of the defense with a linebacker. I really like Jack Campbell at Iowa, and while being biased, I do like DeMarvion Overshown at Texas too.
Haha, I think if anyone asks you may have to explain that pudding of choice! Have a great meal and enjoy the football.
An even handed view of where things stand in Jetsland where even keel is very rare indeed.
Over the years I've grown wary of the players, particularly the QBs who suddenly get a lot of enthusiasm just before the draft when I had basically never heard about them during the season. I may be a good barometer because I follow the main teams but I don't get into the weeds following the Coastal Carolinas or Liberties unless they happen to have a guy who gets a great deal of attention during the season such that you just can't miss them.
It was just that way with Zack. I never heard boo about him during the season or until just before the draft when he seemed to have come from nowhere, at least to me. Guys who typically haven't played a lot of games but had put together a decent season probably against mediocre opponents. I have seen that type rarely live up to the sudden hype.
I have great respect for Joe D, so this is probably just ignorance on my part but still Zack seems to fit that pattern.
Have a great Thanksgiving and keep up the great analyses!
Happy Thanksgiving Philipp. You're absolutely right about the QBs, players who have only one year of success against questionable opposition need extra scouting, they obviously shouldn't be discounted because you can find some gems but I do think that a lot of these young men gets hyped too much and then get over drafted which in turn raises unrealistic expectations. I hope now that Zach is being given the time to work on his fundamentals out of the spotlight he can develop into what we want him to be.
Thank God Zach is out. He's been the worst qb in the nfl for his 20 starts. White gives us a better chance to win. Saleh handled the media perfectly, "Zach is still hugely important to the future of the org, but at this time, he needs a reset." Period.
So even on Thanksgiving day? This was a really fun read. Lots of good stuff. Bye the way, yes, it was Ron Wolfe that said you should draft a QB every year. I think the majority of Jet fans will be hoping or even expecting JD and company to go after a high profile veteran QB this offseason. Lamar Jackson will be the big name but he will get the Franchise Tag. Guys like Aaron Rodgers, Jamis Winston/Andy Dalton, D.Carr and of course Jimmy G will be on many wish lists. But they will all be very expensive and with Q.Williams and several other key Jets looking for big deals I’m not seeing those guys as options. I’m thinking it might be a less touted guy like Gardner Minshew, Tylor Heinecke or even Jacoby Brissett. All of who have demonstrated the ability be leaders of men and capable enough to win with. I also expect JD to draft a QB and Herndon Hooker,Will Levis and Grayson McCall all fit the requirements as athletic QB’s with impressive resumes. I haven’t caught any of KJ Jefferson’s games yet and there quite a few others like M.Penix who has resurrected his career after transferring from Indiana! Thanks for another great read! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours my friend!
Jets have 4 Qb’s for a reason. White & Flacco move up, Streveler sees opportunity. Quietly the Jets promoted White a month ago, this has been in the works for awhile, Saleh and his staff prepared. White of course is a FA at the end of the year, pivotal time in his career, Mike could make some serious money.
This is also a test for LaFleur and his System. If White is anything he is a system QB. Zach has that wonderful arm talent, Mike is not a noodle arm QB, but he is close. Quarterbacking is more than arm talent, but can a QB with a less than average arm succeed in this system ? I am going to define Offensive success as 21 Offensive points per game.
Will the Offensive line have a tougher time with White ? He is not stationary but doesn’t have Zach’s mobility ? Watch how fast White gets the ball out. It better be 2.5 or better.
Very curious to see which WR will flourish under White. Place your bets.
Finally , Saleh &JD have been courageous in making a tough decision, but now the microscope is on La Fleur, and possibly the QB Coach. The primary job of a QB Coach IMHO is to make sure your QB has sound fundamentals. Accountability
Oh, and PS: I recall another "noodle-arm" QB who did a pretty OK job when at the helm - Chad Pennington.
Mike's gonna do fine; I was at the game last year vs the Bengals, was there shouting MIKE! WHITE! at the end so much my throat was hoarse the rest of the week. He did that, with the Jets 2021 team.
This time it's different. A Top-Five defense vs 2021 team; more and better play-makers on Offense with G-Dubs, actual Tight Ends that can block and catch, better running game, and at least as good an O-Line as last year. He is very accurate short pass, processes the looks and reads better and faster than Zach has shown to date. His one flaw, turnovers? Attribute that to lack of playing time and with the inherent flaws the 2021 offense had.
"... promoted White a month ago, this has been in the works for awhile..." - absolutely agree with this. This is a smart and dedicated Coaching Staff, and Saleh is, to paraphrase from David here with his blog, just soaring up the scale of my what-a-great-coach-we-now-have meter.
David, I love this blog site you have, it's my daily visit with my coffee in the AM (along with GangGreenNation, JetsWire, etc...). You wear your love for this team like I do, last Sunday you probably were shouting at your screen since the end of the first quarter at Saleh to "... BENCH Him!! Put in MIKE WHITE!!! ... just like I was.
I love best that you keep track of what you don't know, so I trust your views more than any of those reporters in press conferences who are angling for a "gotcha" moment as they ask questions of Coach and the players. Smart, thoughtful analysis - like I said, my first read every morning.
JetOrange, coming back to the staff preparing for this - man you are so right. We see Saleh in his press conferences, or for that matter Joe Douglas - they know they're on the spotlight, in the sharktank commonly known as the New York Sports Media, and they have play it just right, explaining to the media the problems the team is growing through but not be perceived as throwing the players under the bus. Saleh knows he doesn’t need to tell the Ciminis of the world that they’ve been thinking about this for a long time and they’ve been preparing for this change if needed. Ya just can’t give these press types the impression that they deserve this kind of knowledge – because the next questions would surely be along the lines of, “What??? So you’ve had no confidence in your QB who you picked SECOND in last year’s draft – and why didn’t you tell us this EARLIER??!! The Public Deserves to Know, and We are The Ones who DECIDE THIS!!!” Sheesh, I swear, these press types are cannibals, willing to eat each other if it gets their bylines to the top of the news charts!
Saleh knows, Douglas knows – the Primary Goal is always to work towards building a Winner. Secondary goals: to that is everything to contributes toward goal #1; to not give the NY media any soundbites that allow these presstitutes to create the perception that the sky is falling ( example one: Moore and his discontent being painted as Jamal Adams 2.0.); playing down the NY media's attempt to make this into Zach losing the locker room/Jets renaissance imploding/SOJ/Zach's career is Ryan Leaf 2.0; and so on we could all give other examples of the ways things can go south in this town. Saleh is navigating through all this in a way that Rex Ryan (whom I loved as our coach but lets face it, had his flaws) never could. He shows wisdom, patience but not blind dogma (... "that's my story and I'm stickin with it" ...). He shows care for his team and for the foundation characteristics that he knows a winning team must have to become winners together.
I love this guy - and I hope Zach can truly understand and KNOW, from his stones to his bones, just how fortunate he is to have a coach like Saleh, a staff like we have, and what an opportunity it is now be able to really focus on getting his feet set under him (and all the rest of the shitty mechanics he's displayed which points to bad, bad habits that have to be undone and will take a long while, like David here accurately predicts).
Like I said, Saleh knows all the above – he knows what it takes to build a winner, he’s done it in Seattle, he’s done it in San Francisco. Douglas knows this, too, in Spades. For goodness sake, Joe sat at the right hand of Ozzie Newsome, who is simply the best GM ever, for FIFTEEN YEARS!
And finally, I see signs that Jets Management/Ownership is beginning to know this, too.
So last remark is to Woody & Chris – stick with Douglas and Saleh – keep them here and don’t fall for the “you’re not getting it done" ... and in 2 or 3 years, repeating the cycle-deathtrap that resulted in the destruction of Sam Darnold as a viable winning NFL QB.
Look at the truly great organizations in this league and they have two things in common, stability and longevity in their leadership.
Examples, to name a few - how many coaches have the Steelers had in the past 53 years. THREE! From Chuck Noll in 1969 (193-148; Four SB wins) --- to Cowher (14 yrs, 149-90, 7 AFC Div, 2 AFC conf wins, 1 SB win) --- to Mike Tomlin (15 yrs and counting, 157-92, 2 SB wins as Asst Coach and HC).
How about the Ravens? John Harbaugh – 15 yrs HC; 4 div Champs; 9 playoff berths; 1 AFC champ, 1 SB win. Oh, and that’s with Ozzie running the show as the GM, with JOE DOUGLAS there for the two Raven SB victories (the other being Brian Billick in 2001 when the Ravens waxed the Giants 34-7). And other teams with same characteristics, which I won’t mention because one of them is the mortal enemy up north.
All winners. All known for stability, longevity – and when the time comes for rebuilding as Father Time catches up, all known for quickly getting back on the horse and not wallowing in the depths like our beloved Green’n’White have for all these years.
Woody, Chris – please keep these guys for as long as you can, as long as they want to stay. Douglas can get the right players and Saleh can coach them up into the kind of team we all want, as good as or better than the above examples. And I think Saleh is only going to get better with time; he's already a better coach than he was last year, because he KNOWS what he's teaching WORKS!
If you’re still reading this far down, thanks. Go Jets!!!
Spot on with your accurate comments on the NewYork Press. There are some similarities between Mike White & Chad Pennington, granted it’s a stretch but I’m excited.Once again I am very curious to see which WR ‘s & TE’s will flourish. Check down Mike will give substantial opportunities to Carter, Robinson and Ty Johnson
One thing - when will they ever move the Lions off of thanksgiving day - however they can only help us today not sure they will though ! Enjoy your chicken !

hey Bobber -
it's a pudding, not a penis. contrary to common belief, we Americans do get out a bit, see the rest of the world :-)
I never used the word penis. I knew what it was. Had an English friend introduce it to me 45 years ago. You have a dirty mind, lol
yes I do! and sometimes i get in trouble for it!!! but at my age, getting in trouble for anything is a feature, not a bug hahaha
Go Jets!
