A win would be unexpected and certainly awesome! I'm hoping for a competitive game. I'm flying Saturday morning and staying until Tuesday. It should be a fun trip.
Thanks again for your articles. You make excellent points that I most always agree with. Some other writers usually write sttuff about what other reporters say and report. I don't bother to read the " hear-say" stuff anymore. Your topics and opinions are on point.
Great stuff as always, David. I do have a couple of questions:
1) How is the Jets’ overall run blocking grading out on PFF / FB Outsiders / your eye test? Are we seeing an improvement week by week? The same for Tomlinson, it looks like there was some moderate success running behind him based on the visual you put in. Do the ‘numbers’ suggest that he seems to be settling in? Appreciate PFF isn’t particularly scientific.
2) Is there anywhere that tracks the proportion of a team’s rushes that aren’t positive i.e. <4 yards? Where do you think the Jets might rank in that? It feels like there are a lot of plays where the interior OL seems to get welded together creating a lot of congestion with nowhere for the running back to go. Would be interested to see if this is actually the case or if it’s just me thinking that because I only really watch the Jets in detail and I will have selection biases.
Thanks for reading and appreciate the feedback with the questions. Will try and answer these:
1) In terms of our overall run game we are rated 24/32 on PFF. Using the adjusted line yards on football outsiders which is more specific to line play, we are 21/32. Our running backs are hit at or behind the line on 18% of plays which is right at the NFL average, teams like Jacksonville are up at 31%, even Buffalo is at 22%. So in terms of that we're kind of average, although our scheme is such that we'll get a lot of 1 yard carries but then get more 10+ yard carries as well. Tomlinson had his best run blocking game against Miami according to PFF, they gave him a 60.4 which is significantly higher than his 2nd best game which was against Cleveland at 44.4. There are definitely signs that Tomlinson is starting to settle in, in relation to run blocking but also pass protection, he's allowed 2 pressures over the last 2 games after allowing 13 through the first three.
2) I'm not 100% sure if that stat is out there but I'll take a look. The zone scheme by its nature will have more than the average runs stuffed, but it'll also have more than the average big plays. So it can be a little hard to really gauge the success by watching. I do think we run too much inside zone at the moment and we ideally want to stretch teams more with some wide zone concepts.
Great job as always though I struggle a bit with the graphics. Maybe it is an age thing at 67. Took my son to the Jets and then we went to Citi. Very long day, but what a day. Did not know you liked the Mets as well. As to the Rangers, who you also like, they are about to come on in my home. Are you sure you are not from NYC? Am off from Maine to Lambeau on Friday where my son will meet me. Love your work DWHQ

Nice, thanks
...Or because there are a lot of run/pass option plays where the wrong option is taken or the receivers aren’t getting quick separation.
