I was planning on doing a little study/analysis at the end of the season to see if there was a correlation on the players they were potentially overrating and their agents. You want in?
There are two minor DB stories that I like. First, after, being inactive all year, Bryce Hall was active, but didn’t take a single Defensive snap. With Echols out , there seemed to be an opportunity. The rise and fall of Bryce Hall is indeed curious. The second story is the rise of UNDFA Tony Adams, Safety, but played meaningful reps as the dime back. Tony is in the mix for 2023 starting FS. This years draft class was outstanding, part of this amazing class is two UNDFA’s , Bam Knight & Tony Adams
I’m old school. I rather judge a player on what I see not what statistics from computer say.
Mann is a very erratic punter. It seems when the Jets need a big time punt, he blows it. I might be wrong on this does he ever directional punt out of bounds. Everything is straight down the field. His propensity to kick to the middle of the field has cost this team two games with punt return tds. If I’m the GM, I’d sign Matt Araiza immediately. He was cleared of all sexual charges. If the Jets don’t sign him, someone else will. Araiza was one of the highest rated punters coming out of college this past year.
Bryce Huff needs more playing time. All I know whenever he is on the field, he causes more havoc than any other Jet defender not named Quinnen Williams. Eye test here, watch when the pocket is collapsing, what do you see, #47.
Speaking of eye test, without knowing any stats, Sunday’s game showed me that if White didn’t get hurt, Zach would never see the field this year.
If anyone saw anything positive from him on Sunday, please educate me because my eye sight is going and I might have missed something. Did he make a few outstanding throws definitely, yes. But we still see throws of off his back foot, bounced throws in the dirt. Hail Mary throws that Carter and Wilson made great receptions saving interceptions. If the analytics guys want to attack, he came into the game with a lifetime completion percentage of a little over 54 %. Against one of the worse pass defenses this week, he gave 51 plus %. I saw where one Zachanista commented that his performance likened him to Mahomes. Hey pal, pass it to me, my body aches every morning when I get out of bed.
If Douglas and Saleh see Mahomes then this franchise is in big trouble.
All the Zachanistas bring out what Peyton Manning did his first two years or some other outstanding quarterback’s stats. The one flaw in their defense of Zach is this. These QBs showed continuing progress in years 1 to 2 and 2 to 3. Can you honestly say that about Zach, that he has shown progress.
Been a fan since 1963, I have seen where meaningless wins at the end of the year cost the Jets a great player in the draft. Off the top of my head, Lawrence Taylor( drafted Freeman McNeil) and Matt Ryan ( drafted Vern “the Ghoul” Gholston), I could find more believe me. Two years ago, I wanted the Jets to lose out once it looked like their season was turning to trash. The prize, Trevor Lawrence. I was called every name in the book on another Jet site. How dare you root for the Jets to lose, winning the Ram game was important for the team to build a winning culture. A winning culture with Gase as HC and the worse roster in the NFL, really or this classic because the scouts say that Lawrence is a generational player doesn’t mean it will happen or this one Ram win important, I rather have the win, we will worry about a the qb position down the road. This Thursday the never root to lose group will see the folly of their thinking because there is no comparison between Lawrence and Zach. Do I want to see the Jets lose, NO, but the prize was their for their the taking. The only team in NFL history with 2 wins not having the number one pick. Do you think the Jets with Lawrence could have won their last 3 games.
Sorry to bore you with my ranting. As I said I’m old, time for my prunes and Metamucil.
A lot of fair comments in there, I tend to use a balance of stats and the eye test. Watch the games and then see if the stats agree with what you've seen or if maybe we missed something, after all we're all human and like computers, humans are fallible.
Absolutely agree on Huff and Mann, in tomorrows newsletter there is going to be a small focus on special teams and then on Huff as well, because his stats are exceptional which backs up what we see every single weekend.
On Zach I'm trying to see the positives that so many people saw, but the 51% completion is awful and so is the off-target percentage which goes hand in hand. He did make a couple of nice throws, but if we're being honest he should have had at minimum 2 picks, I still don't know how MC made that catch on the ball that basically just went into the air. Also on the final drive, it was bad clock management, but Zach also took 2 bad sacks that just can't happen in that situation.
I have no idea about the QB position going forward, but every time I see Zach I become more convinced that he's not the answer. I don't know if White is, he probably isn't, but I'm at least undecided on him to a point where I really want to see more to find out.
David, as always well done. ( note, if you get the chance there we’re 3 or 4 typos. As for who was responsible for the late Detroit TD I think the only wat to know for sure would be an overhead view of the defensive alignment. It appeared the Jets were sort of in a zone. I say sort of because I’m sure they were looking for a QB sneak. Read an article elsewhere that said Detroit runs that almost always in those situations. If that’s right Quincy was lined up as our right side OLB. The pass was caught in the right flat so I can’t see how anyone could expect the MLB who had to be looking to stop a QB sneak to follow a TE across the field to make a play? Mosely was later seen running down the field trailing the play so maybe people assumed the TE was his responsibility. My guess is he had the RB if the crack went into their right flat.
Preach! Thank you!!! You hit every nail on the head. Zach has shown absolutely no improvement and it’s clear he is not the QB of the future. Look I want to be fair and give the guy a shot but let’s call a spade a spade when you see it. One thing I will say they the team had progressed a lot faster than anticipated. This year should’ve been taking the small steps to improve and build on but we are thrust in the middle of a battle for a playoff spot so Zach’s shortcomings are more evident/pronounced.
This is the kind of thing you do your homework on and if you are uncomfortable you pass. However if your research comes up clean you do what you feel is best for the organization. Gotta ask yourself how you would feel if your son was accused of this crime? Pretty sure you would want him to get a fair shake. If he’s clean, he won’t be the first kid to have his life potentially destroyed by a false allegation.
Fair point. I tend to look at this from my daughter's perspective. In this case it seems pretty certain, based on the phone call with the victim recorded by the police, that he was involved. He won't be charged but looking at this guy as the first opportunity to upgrade the position I think is wrong for the team and fans. Let someone else sign him.
Last I saw, all charges were dropped. I think in this country you are innocent until proven guilty. If you had no problem with the Jets trading for Tyreek Hill then signing Araiza shouldn’t be a problem. Because Hill was guilty of assault. If they proved Araiza committed a sexual assault than he should be jailed.
When Mr Coffee was ruling the roost, he refused to even talk to Kareem Hunt when the Chiefs dropped him. The GM who drafted him at KC picked him up in Cleveland. A few things here.
The league gave the OK for teams to sign him.
Mr Coffee ( the worst GM in Jet history and top 5 all time worst NFL GMs ) said he wasn’t interested.
Here’s the problem, unless Woody told him no, I get it but Woody didn’t say beans.
Coffee came out and said that a friend of his wife was beaten by her husband. So Hunt was a no because of his personal beliefs.
The last I saw Coffee was hired to build a winner not to espouse his personal beliefs. Woody or Clueless Chris should have force the issue. But they thought Coffee was a good GM, so they let it lie. If I’m the owner, I would have fired him but the Johnsons are in a fog.
JD tried to get Hill from the Chiefs. He dropped in the draft because he used his girlfriend as a punching bag.
MacCagnan was hired to build a winning franchise. The NFL gave teams the ok to sign Hunt. He said” he refused to go after Hunt because a friend of his wife was assaulted by her husband”. He was against signing Hunt for that reason. Sorry, but his job was to secure the best players available regardless of his beliefs. I guess my assumption is he is not doing what he is paid to do. It seems you have issues with Hunt and Araiza. If that’s your moral compass fine. But in the end, MacCagnan proved he was the worst GM in Jet history and only contributed to many years of lousy drafts, free agent signings and football.
On any other team Mann would have been gone after the Patriot game. Only this team keeps him - there must be a stat for incompentance by the GM and Coach. Speaking of the Rangers - HUGE game tonight and at least that is something to look foward to this week. When Dolan (owner) didnt see any 'playoffs' he fire the rangers whole management organization - they made it to the conference finals with a new regime. Think Woody Johnson will do that when they finish 7-10 ? NO
Was your PFF quip at the end a nod to what the Kelce brothers said a few weeks back?
Absolutely. The more I think about it, the more it makes sense.
I was planning on doing a little study/analysis at the end of the season to see if there was a correlation on the players they were potentially overrating and their agents. You want in?

Great comment. I agree we should bring in Araiza. We will get some flack for it but it will subside when fans see how talented he is.
We should sign a guy who was probably involved in a gang rape?

I’d pass on hill too. These things bother some of us. Even if the charges were dropped.
You have a right in your beliefs. Happy Holidays to you and your family.
Same to you!

You would have fired the GM for not signing a wife beater?

Too bad you didn't talk about clock management. The game was there for the pickings if management didn't waste approximately 30 seconds.
I did mention it yesterday, but Tuesday's post is always based on the player stats.
A really good read by Ian O’Connor in the NY Post regarding Saleh taking all the blame. Has some good points in it.
