I think the O-line expenditure inflated us to #1 in the league b/c of the Becton injury and decision to sign Duane Brown. I'll give JD credit for trying to get the best players to put on the field, especially the O-line which was supposed to be protecting a growing #2 pick. Hindsight is always 20/20 and if the GM/Coaches thought AVT could play tackle as good as he did and Max Mitchell could play as good as he did we would not have signed Brown. We could have left Fant at LT. Brown's price tag will hurt us for the next 3 years! Dead money galore. There are a lot of uncertainties on the line.

I agree with resigning Connor McGovern and Nasty Nate. Draft a Guard and/or Tackle early. One guy left off the list was Dr. Laurent Duvernay-Tardif. He came back after finishing his internship and can now focus on football. I think he can be a viable fill in when need be.

I doubt Duane Brown will retire. He is do to make an additional 10,500,000 next year.

Good article. I think the jets have the highest payroll for lineman is becuae they have to give out these outlandish contracts every time somone gets hurt (pure conjecture on my part). IMO they all can go every one of them ( keep AVT and Hebig). Cant keep having guys made out of glass on the team. Becton should be the first cut. You just know where ever the Jets draft (top 10 or top 20) they are takng a O Lineman that will get hurt by gane 3 in 2023. This will never get fixed.

John Benton is a veteran coach of 18 seasons, and is the Offensive Line Coach and the Running Game Coordinator. The injuries have caused absolute chaos, but maybe a coaching change is in order. In any event, looking for a New Passing Game Coordinator, and now a new Running Game Coordinator. This was John’s first year as Running Game Coordinator, it wasn’t an overly successful year. The next question is , do the blocking schemes need tweaking, or possibly simplified. If McGovern & Tomlinson seem confused late in the season, is it them, or the system ? It’s worth noting that Benton’s career in SF, was up and down. Does the Offensive Line need a fresh approach ?

Nate Herbig is a key signing, Nate is a versatile player, has played a little Center, but demand could be significant in FA, JD will remain disciplined. The signing of Nate would allow AVT to slide to Right Tackle, allowing Mitchell to become the swing. Like to re-sign Cedric at just above Vet Minimum

It’s quite unfortunate we need to use valuable assets on the line yet again but that’s where we are. At least they have filled a lot of the other gaping holes the team had where if they can fix the line it should be all systems go (assuming they have a QB of course)

Good article and spot on. OT is the greatest need. Becton really has been a disappointment. I’d like to keep Herbig too. This line looked so much better with White.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Wherever Elgton Jenkins lines up for the Green Bay Packers, he will be one of the highest-paid players at either guard or tackle after he signed an extension with the team on Friday.

The four-year deal, which includes a $24 million signing bonus, is worth $68 million and could reach up to $74 million with incentives, a source told ESPN.

The deal will keep Jenkins with the Packers through the 2026 season at an average of $17 million per year.

JD screwed up his first draft plenty. He should have drafted Wirfs instead of Beckton . Wirfs is all pro and like AVT can play many places. Then his trade to get more picks in later rounds sounded good but his picks (Mims, Ashtyn Davis, Morgan-QB, Perrine-RB and others) simply were terrible picks and wasted. He did get Bryce Hall CB though in the 5th round which was good but now he is not a starter. I think the Jets should sign a QB (Carr, Ryan or Garrapolo) and draft an OT or two, a C, a LB and a S and another CB. I think the Jets have the offensive weapons they-their WR are good, their RB are good when Breece returns, their TE are the best they have had in a decade or more. They need an OL to protect one of the QBs signed, which are all good given protection and these QBs can spread the ball to the weapons which are good. Get the QB, shore up the OL and get quality depth in the draft. They will be a playoff team in 2023.

You can cover up deficiency at safety but OL needs to be solid and ideally dominant in this system. Let's try again.

Every year for 4 years I've said I want the Jets to focus on OL in the draft, across multiple high draft picks, and 2023 could be the year. Need an OT, and maybe C and OG. Draft the Tomlinson replacement?

Assuming we're not drafting a QB -

Outside of OL it's mostly Safety needed (2!), and LB. Maybe another DL. But our team is talented with a few holes, so that's exciting for the offseason .

Nice breakdown.

With very few centers available, CMG might earn a big contract. If we don't want to overpay, we need to draft a center too.

Laken is so disappointing. Imagine if we had twin pro bowl guards on our OL? (AVT and '21 LT). This is a crazy regression.

Hi Chris was being facetious but he certainly is never in the Jets best interest - total bust time to move on at least as a starter or eat the contract. What’s the difference he hadn’t played in 2 years and won’t be in 2023 either

David, interesting you choose today to start the offseason chatter! 😂 But seriously this is a major topic among serious Jet fans. It’s depressing seeing how we are actually investing more money than any other team on our o-line. The results are obviously not there. My hope is that JD finally comes to his senses and moves on from Mount Becton. Bringing him back would be the very definition of insanity. There is no reason to believe we see different results. His lack of commitment is just a big time turnoff for me.
