☕ Good morning
Can the Jets afford to keep Bryce Huff, the premier speed rusher on the staff? How are the Jets going to open up enough cap space to fix their offensive issues? And, how does the defence shape up heading into 2024?
🏈 Welcome to Friday’s edition of The Jets Way.
Jets salary cap situation: Right now the Jets have just $366k in effective cap space, which is ranked 21st in the league. They also need to find a way to re-sign Bryce Huff, sign at least one, probably two starting tackles and sure up their receiving room. But Zack Rosenblatt explains how the Jets can clear $67 million to create the space to do just that.
Can the Jets afford Bryce Huff: I’m surprised by how many people are comfortable with the idea of letting Huff go. We spent so long in pass-rush purgatory after John Abraham headed to Atlanta in 2006. Two years later we tried to replace him with Vernon Gholston, and Quinton Coples a few years after that. We struggled for. along time to find that pass-rush specialist, that speed-rusher who struck fear into offensive tackles. We have that guy now, Rich Cimini examines whether we can keep him.
Zach Wilson “He ain’t it”: Sticking with Rich Cimini here, the ESPN Jets beat writer doesn’t expect teams to be falling over themselves to make Zach a backup QB. Talking on his Flight Deck podcast Cimini predicted that the Jets can expect a day three pick in return for Wilson: "He might have to settle for a No. 3 job. I don’t know (if) anyone is going to be knocking down his door to offer him a No. 2, He’s not going to turn into a star. Yes, he does have talent but we know his shortcomings. Yes, the Jets did him no favours with the way they treated him but let’s be real, he ain’t it."
🟢⚪ We’ve already focused on the players who are signed through 2024 on the offensive side of the ball, and we’ve looked at all the players who have signed future/reserve contracts. Today, we focus on the strength of the team, the players signed through 2024 on the defensive side of the ball.
