Good morning!
Nothing will likely happen in the NFL calendar now until the 27th of February when teams will descend on Indianapolis for the scouting combine. Quarterbacks will be hyped for making athletic throws against air, and linemen will get overhyped for bench pressing a lot of weight, but we will get to hear from Robert Saleh and Joe Douglas, and player interviews will be revealed. September is a long way away, but we’ve got plenty to look forward to over the coming months. New season, new hope.
We’ve picked up a lot of subscribers over the last week or two, so a warm welcome to you.
Chad Reuter is the latest to release a 3-round mock draft on NFL.com and he had the Patriots trading for Justin Fields, which shook things up a little. As far as the Jets go, you won’t be shocked to hear the name Taliese Fuaga mocked to them at #10 - “If the Jets can sign a free-agent receiver or trade for a veteran at the position to help Aaron Rodgers, then they'll line up a tackle at this spot. The team could play Alijah Vera-Tucker at left tackle and put Fuaga on the right side.” In the third round, he had the Jets taking a safety in Tyler Nubin from Minnesota.
Now the end of the season is officially here, NFL.com released their off-season power rankings. No surprise to see the Chiefs sitting at #1 after their 2nd Super Bowl in a row. The Jets came in at #24 - “At the end of the season, it felt like something had to change, and yet, the Jets are rolling it back, pretty much just as they wanted to at the start of last season. It's beyond obvious what the risks are here. Like in 2023, the Jets will be hoping for a healthy Aaron Rodgers to hold up. The big difference in 2024 is that he'll turn 41 years old and is coming off a torn Achilles. The fact that Rodgers' injury happened so early in '23 clearly works in the favor of the quarterback and team, but with Zach Wilson likely on his way out, the Jets are going to have to draft someone and probably add a veteran QB to the mix, just in case. Everyone saw how unprepared Gang Green looked for such a disastrous development at the start of last season, so that obviously can't happen again. It feels like a make-or-break year for Robert Saleh, Rodgers and a lot of other key Jets.“
As far as the rest of the AFC East was concerned, here’s how they ranked:
New England Patriots (30th)
Buffalo Bills (5th)
Miami Dolphins (11th)
There was an interesting mock draft in PFF recently which saw the Jets move back with the Commanders.
PFF also named one underrated free agent and every defensive position and there were two names familiar to Jets fans. Blake Cashman was named the most underrated linebacker heading to free agency, coming off a stellar year for Houston. And Jordan Whitehead was named the most underrated safety heading to free agency.
Right now the Jets have 35 players signed to deals for next season, excluding the 11 players they signed to future/reserve contracts. We covered those players last week, we’re going to look at the remaining 35 starting today with the offence. It’s good to look at where you are before you start getting into the deep dives on who to target to get you to where you want to go.
