Good morning. ☕
A little bit of personal news to start this Monday morning. I’ve started a world football newsletter called The Football Fix, so if you have any interest in the other football, head on over and get subscribed. If you don’t like the other football but know someone who does, I’d appreciate any help in spreading the word.
I hope everyone had a good weekend. The team are off this week, so I’m not expecting a heavy news week, so if you have any topic suggestions, keep sending them through. We’ve already covered a couple of reader suggestions and we have plenty of days to fill before the Jets arrive back for camp in July.
Today I’m going to take some time to talk about the supplemental draft.
😂 Mike Tannenbaum has officially gone off the reservation. The former Jets GM had a lot to say about the team’s choice to cancel mandatory minicamp in an ESPN appearance: "[The Jets] started off with an 'A+' for the offseason and now they get an 'F.' Why would you cancel minicamp? That's the most competitive part of the offseason. Every day together is a good day. You're competing with ... teams that have been together for years and years. I would take as much time as possible to have Aaron Rodgers in the building with his new teammates."
📈 CBS Sports released its list of the top 100 players in the NFL and the Jets had 4 players on the list. Sauce Gardner came in at #15, Quinnen Williams was at #28, Aaron Rodgers was at #29 and Garrett Wilson was at #63, “As a rookie, dealing with a lot of bad quarterback play, he had 83 catches to win NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. Imagine what he can do this season with Aaron Rodgers?”
🧐 PFF ranked the NFL defensive lines yesterday, and they had the Jets slotted in at number 14, which again, seems a little low to me. I’d be amazed if this defensive line isn’t considered a top-10 unit at the end of the season: “The Jets are in a very similar situation to the Chiefs. Interior defender Quinnen Williams has emerged as one of the best players at his position over the last couple of years and earned the fourth-highest grade among interior defenders in 2022. But while multiple edge defenders on the Jets roster have flashed ability in the past, none have proven they can play consistently at a high level for an entire season. Projected starter John Franklin-Myers earned a PFF grade over 80.0 in back-to-back seasons, but he played just 643 snaps last year.”
🙄 Will Blackmon who started 30 games over a 10-year career had this to say about the Jets acquisition of Rodgers: “He’s going to a desperate organization, they’ve never been to the playoffs for 20 years. They’ve had losing seasons in the past 7 years,” Will Blackmon stated. “There is lots of pressure on Aaron Rodgers.”
What is the Supplemental Draft?
If you’re reading this newsletter, chances are you know what the supplemental draft is. But just in case you don’t it’s an extra draft held in the summer to accommodate players in special situations. Often it’s for players who have been deemed ineligible for the upcoming college season, meaning they can’t play NCAA and they were too late to enter the actual NFL draft.
The draft order is completely different to the normal NFL Draft, with teams being placed into three pots:
Teams who missed the playoffs and had 6 wins or less.
Teams who missed the playoffs and had 6 wins or more.
Teams who made the playoff.
Each group is weighted based on the team's wins from the previous year. So let’s say the Texans and Cardinals each see a player they like and they both happen to blindly put in a bid for a second-round pick, both teams are in the first pot, but the player will be awarded to the Texans because they finished 3-13-1 and the Cardinals finished 4-13.
As mentioned, the teams bid blindly. They have no idea if any other teams are placing a bid for the player, so they have to bid what they truly believe the player is worth, or what they’re willing to pay for the player. If their bid is successful then they lost that draft pick in the 2024 draft.
So using the above example, the Texans successfully placed a 2nd-round bid for Player X, which was the highest bid so they are awarded the player. The Texans would not have a 2nd-round pick in the 2024 draft.
Players need to apply for acceptance into the Supplemental draft and must be three years removed from high school to stand any chance of being accepted.
The Jets are in that second pot having won 7 games last season.
Have the Jets ever selected a player in the Supplemental draft?
In total, there have been 46 players selected in the supplemental draft since its inception in 1977, and that list includes Hall of Famer Cris Carter.
The Jets have made one pick and one pick only in the Supplemental draft and that was for Rob Moore back in 1990. The Syracuse WR failed to declare for the official draft in time so was granted entry into the supplemental draft, the Jets pounced on the opportunity bidding a first-round pick.
Moore grew up 5 minutes from the Jets training camp at the time in Hempstead and left Syracuse having set school records with 2,122 yards and 22 touchdowns.
He ended up playing for five years with the Jets catching 306 passes for 4,258 yards and 22 touchdowns before being traded to the Cardinals. The Jets got the Cardinal’s first-round pick in the 1995 draft (16th overall) and running back Ron Moore, who totalled 1,018 yards as a rookie in 1993.
The Jets then drafted Hugh Douglas with the 16th overall pick in the 1995 draft. The Central State defensive end recorded 10 sacks as a rookie, and won the DROTY award. Then three years later in 1998 he was traded to the Eagles, having been deemed a bad fit for the 3-4 defense that Bill Parcells was implementing.
Douglas understood the move, saying: ''Looking back, I never thought I'd get traded, But anything's possible. I got every indication the Jets were sticking with the 3-4, so I honestly think I didn't fit into Coach Parcells's plans. That's what he said to me when we met this morning. No hard feelings. And that's about it.''
The last supplemental draft was held in 2019, but it’s been confirmed that it will return on the 11th of July this year.
Who’s entering the supplemental draft this year?
The full list won’t be available until closer to the draft, but names will start leaking out over the coming weeks.
We do know that Purdue receiver Milton Wright has already been approved for the draft, and there’s a very good chance that someone takes a shot on him.
Wright was tipped to play a big role with the Boilermakers last year, replacing David Bell who was taken in the 3rd round of the 2022 draft by the Cleveland Browns, but unfortunately for Wright and Purdue, he was deemed academically ineligible and was forced to miss the season.
The 6’3, 200lb receiver finished his Purdue career having caught 99 passes for 1,325 yards and 10 touchdowns over 27 games. In 2021 alone he caught 57 passes for 732 yards and 7 touchdowns and was on the ascendency.
I’m sure more than one team will place a bid on him, and I’m going to guess that a 3rd round pick gets it done. Although if you’re a team who won 7-9 games last year, you may want to place a 2nd rounder to be safe.
I don’t think the Jets will be in the market for Wright, but you never know.
Mike Tannenbaum, a bean counter who happen to be in the right place at the right time. Hired by Parcells as a capologist, somehow replaced Bradway as GM.
To his credit probably made a top ten if not top 5 draft day trade, trading up 11 spots to select Revis. Same draft, did the same thing, traded up to draft David Harris, a Jet mainstay for a decade.
Unfortunately, Tannenbaum, his hat size got a little bigger, thought he had to trade up every chance he could. Traded up to take Steven Hill ( the next Calvin Johnson, not). With all these trade ups, he was killing the Jets depth.
Then came Rex and Hard Knocks, Tannenbaum again featured because of the Revis negotiations somewhere in a diner upstate New York, ( I think it was around the corner from Ron Alexander’s house). Tannenbaum’s hat size got a little bigger.
Then the great Tebow acquisition pushed by Woody to sell Tebow jerseys. Tannenbaum couldn’t leave well enough alone, he then extended Sanchez for some unknown reason.
Tannenbaum then was fired. Hired to be a consultant for the Dolphins. Consulting them to a couple of bad drafts and bad seasons then on to ESPN. Where 75% of their football experts know as much as any reader here, maybe even less.
Him criticizing Saleh is a joke. He hasn’t a clue what has happened behind closed doors at One Jet Way.
As David has noted. The Jets having a very glaring need for a wide receiver drafted Rob Moore, Syracuse wr during a supplemental draft before the 1990 season. They used their 1991 first round pick to pick Moore in the 1990 supplemental draft. When the Jets did this, the general consensus was that it was a great move. Moore was considered a first round talent.
Great move, maybe not. The Jets had Brett Favre as their highest rated player in the 1991 draft. Unfortunately they had already used their first rounder on Moore.
Going into the second round, pick after pick went but Favre was still there. Draft order was Cardinals, Falcons then Jets. GM Dick Steinburg knew Atlanta needed a quarterback. He worked a trade with the Cardinals. The Cardinals wanted a defensive lineman Mike Jones from North Carolina St. The Cardinals were afraid if they made the trade, that Atlanta would take Jones. They backed out of the deal. They took Jones who had a 10 year mediocre career. Falcons took Favre, then traded him to the Pack a year later. The Jets pick, Browning Nagel, The Browning Rifle.
Only the Jets, could come out losers drafting an excellent wide receiver in the supplemental draft.
But
I saw the video of Mr T. totally shocked me -
