Mike Tannenbaum, a bean counter who happen to be in the right place at the right time. Hired by Parcells as a capologist, somehow replaced Bradway as GM.
To his credit probably made a top ten if not top 5 draft day trade, trading up 11 spots to select Revis. Same draft, did the same thing, traded up to draft David Harris, a Jet mainstay for a decade.
Unfortunately, Tannenbaum, his hat size got a little bigger, thought he had to trade up every chance he could. Traded up to take Steven Hill ( the next Calvin Johnson, not). With all these trade ups, he was killing the Jets depth.
Then came Rex and Hard Knocks, Tannenbaum again featured because of the Revis negotiations somewhere in a diner upstate New York, ( I think it was around the corner from Ron Alexander’s house). Tannenbaum’s hat size got a little bigger.
Then the great Tebow acquisition pushed by Woody to sell Tebow jerseys. Tannenbaum couldn’t leave well enough alone, he then extended Sanchez for some unknown reason.
Tannenbaum then was fired. Hired to be a consultant for the Dolphins. Consulting them to a couple of bad drafts and bad seasons then on to ESPN. Where 75% of their football experts know as much as any reader here, maybe even less.
Him criticizing Saleh is a joke. He hasn’t a clue what has happened behind closed doors at One Jet Way.
As David has noted. The Jets having a very glaring need for a wide receiver drafted Rob Moore, Syracuse wr during a supplemental draft before the 1990 season. They used their 1991 first round pick to pick Moore in the 1990 supplemental draft. When the Jets did this, the general consensus was that it was a great move. Moore was considered a first round talent.
Great move, maybe not. The Jets had Brett Favre as their highest rated player in the 1991 draft. Unfortunately they had already used their first rounder on Moore.
Going into the second round, pick after pick went but Favre was still there. Draft order was Cardinals, Falcons then Jets. GM Dick Steinburg knew Atlanta needed a quarterback. He worked a trade with the Cardinals. The Cardinals wanted a defensive lineman Mike Jones from North Carolina St. The Cardinals were afraid if they made the trade, that Atlanta would take Jones. They backed out of the deal. They took Jones who had a 10 year mediocre career. Falcons took Favre, then traded him to the Pack a year later. The Jets pick, Browning Nagel, The Browning Rifle.
Only the Jets, could come out losers drafting an excellent wide receiver in the supplemental draft.
Bobber, 😂 Well I have been by that Roscoe dinner a few times but it’s well over an hour from where I live. I totally agree with you on Tannenbaum. He’s a clown. A funny seen from that Hardknocks was Tannenbaum and Woody being shown on the treadmill.😂 If anybody needed to be on that treadmill it was Tanny! I think he spent a lot more time at the teams buffet table🍔🌭🍕🍦table than he did on the treadmill. I remember Cimini commented on Woody loving being on camera. Reportedly that was the first and only time anyone saw him on that treadmill. 😂
I totally agree on Tannenbaum. I never liked him. He had zero scouting and personnel experience, yet was made GM because of his handling of the cap. A typically horrible decision made by an inept owner of the Jets.
I loved it when he was with the Dolphins. I knew that they would go down the crapper and stay there as long as he was advising them. I wish that he had signed a lifetime contract with them!
Him criticizing Saleh is a total joke. He can't even begin to hold Saleh's jock. The Jets will get an extra week's start on everyone else because of the HOF game. The Jets do have a lot of veterans at key positions and it's a long season. What good would that extra week of practice do if it resulted in those key veterans getting injured of having no gas left in the tank by the end of the season? He's just trying to keep his name in the media.
Great point about how taking Moore most likely caused the Jets to miss out on Brett Favre. It's interesting to think that if the Jets had taken Favre, they would probably have won a lot more games but with some of the horrible coaching hires and GMs they've had, they probably never would have gotten to, much less won a SB, and Favre himself probably never would have developed and become as great a player as he was if he didn't have Mike Holmgren to coach him. He certainly wouldn't have with the clowns the Jets have had over the years. In addition, if we had taken Favre, would the Packers still have taken Aaron Rodgers? If not, would he have been forced to start day one with whomever took him, would he have had incompetent coaching, and then perhaps struggled as badly as Zach has rather than getting to sit for 3 years and watch Favre or another veteran? Would he have become as great as he is if he had gone to another team who didn't have the CS who exceled in developing QBs like GB has had? No move is made in a vaccuum. Each decision/move has ripple effects on that team and all the other teams that affect them through they years. It's wild to think about what the NFL would have been like if the Jets had taken Favre, he had wound up being a mediocre bust for most of his career like Vinny Testaverde, throwing as many interceptions as he did TDs, and how that would have affected other team's drafts, and if Aaron Rodgers, had wound up being a bust or only a mediocre QB, how that would have effected things.
Excellent post Bobber! From what I remember it was Brian Cox yelling and screaming at people in the draft room demanding to draft David Harris. Tanny pulled the trigger but it was Cox who had the most conviction about Harris.
David, Tough time of year for fanatics like us. Good job on the supplemental draft. We had some questions on this topic in my Jet FB group. This will be perfect for those still unsure how it works.

I saw the video of Mr T. totally shocked me -
Unfortunately I think he's got to the point where he feels he needs to make certain statements to generate some clicks and interest.
that must be it - agree !
He's feeling the pressure of being irrelevant and needs to generate clicks and controversy to show he's needed.

Absolutely. I've got an interesting one lined up for tomorrow, but content creation on a daily basis for an NFL team in June is hard work.
