I guess I am old fashioned. I hate all this gambling on sports. NIL and all the rest. What happened to the purity of the game in all sports? All greedy bastards.
Was Sorsby given a lifetime ban from the NFL? If not, then what are you talking about? Unless he was banned, he could still sign with a team as a UDFA or he could enter the 2027 NFL draft. He can play in Canada or some European country, Australia, or Asian country where they have professional football for a year or two and then look to sign with an NFL team.
Sorsby cost himself this opportunity, NOT the NFL. IMO it's a ridiculous take to blame the NFL for him not being able to be in a Supplemental draft. The dumbass kid knew what the rules were about gambling on games both in the NCAA and the NFL. He did it anyway. It's HIS fault and no one else's!
Yes, the NFL is being a bit hypocritical by aligning itself with betting sites, but they HAVE to draw the line at allowing players, coaches, and referees to bet on games. If not, the NFL will cease to exist. There will be incident after incident of players shaving points, players/coaches/refs throwing games, players being theatened or harmed by the Mafia, etc. No one will trust the outcome of games, and people will stop watching, stop going to games, and the goose that lays the golden eggs will cease to exist.
Trust me Phil, you are not alone. It seems like 50% of today’s advertising centers on gambling. I’m not excusing Sorsby’s decision to gamble but it’s easy to see how easy it was for him to do so.
Hypocrisy, thy name is the NFL, plain and simple. As much as I applaud them saying no to the supplemental draft, their being willing accomplices to organized gambling and calling them "valued partners" stinks to high heaven and always will. But they are, by nature, a C Y A organization and firm proponents of "do as I say, not as I do", and need to be held at least somewhat accountable.
That said, Sorsby has caused his own demise. Like so many other types of addicts, he found that he LIKED the unrestricted gambling, which has been shown by the numbers of bets he has placed. And he showed the arrogance of many addicts when confronted, first with pressing his valid suspension until some Texas Tech boosters likely had a word with a friendly judge to get the injunction on the suspension. That in turn led to the entire brouhaha of colleges making serious noises about not playing against TT, and the boosters reversed course and had a word with Sorsby's "team", which probably led to his declaring for the supplemental draft.
To be fair, NO ONE has clean hands here, from the NCAA and the ridiculous way the NIL $$$$$ has been handled, to TT probably knowing there was a serious gambling issue, and on and on down the line all practicing the ultimate in CYA. And no one should be painting Sorsby as a victim, because he isn't. There are some extenuating circumstances that further enabled him, but once he started, he couldn't stop, which shows definite character issues. I don't care how talented he might turn out to be, he doesn't need to be within 50 miles of 1 Jet Drive. He's not only a ticking time bomb but has a figurative suicide vest on 24 hours a day.
As far as Geno goes, what's going to happen is going to happen, and that's that. It will either blow over or proceed to a more involved investigation, and the chips will land where they will.
GREAT post, Mike!!! I couldn't possibly agree more!
I'm against NIL money. Players are getting a free education, getting free training for the NFL which enables them to make millions of dollars, are being fed and pampered in college.
I love football, but our country has gone too nuts over sports. In the name of sports, arts and music education have been eliminated in many places, and cut drastically elsewhere, and numerous studies have proven how the arts (music, drama, and visual arts) help students learn and retain information better; it helps them to do better in math, reading, and language arts; they become better students and get higher grades; stay in school and graduate; and they make better citizens and people. Sports don't have the same effects on students' minds and learning ability, and if anything, they make people more angry, aggressive, frustrated, depressed, and add much stress to our lives.
I've been ranting and raving for years over the wastage of valuable $$$$$ and resources in unending sports scholarships. I know that college football is big business at all levels, but to me, the student athlete is almost always in a hole not of their own making. Natural talented athletes, especially in depressed areas, were encouraged to put their athletic pursuits ahead at the expense of educational competence. They rarely attended classes and had work done for them, as their athleticism was their ticket out. Then they receive scholarships to colleges looking to burnish their credentials on the sports fields, not in the classroom. Work was done for them, term papers authored by others and their actual education was stunted. For every John Urschel (for those who do not know, John Urschel was an offensive lineman for the Baltimore Ravens from 2014-2016. He was a genius level mathematician and retired because of the fear of CTE affecting his progress. I believe he is currently at MIT as an assistant professor in the Math Department), there were 20,000 college "graduates" coming into professional sports without being able to balance a checkbook and put words together in a concise sentence structure while being interviewed by the press.
My thought has always been that there should be some sort of "minor league" system, where the players were paid salaries commensurate to their abilities, with full medical coverage in case of injuries and comprehensive instruction on how to function in life. I know it's a pipe dream because too much money is involved, but the practice shortchanges both student athletes and possible students who would not have access to valuable scholarships.
In a surprising move, that has put Brendan Sorsby as Fan Duel’s odd man’s favorite to NOT be playing in the NFL’s 2026 season.
Commissioner Robert Kraft in making the announcement cited the NFL’s competition committee head, Mike Vrabel’s assessment that giving a team like the Jets the chance to add another top pick quarterback would be unfair for teams who always adhere to league rules such as the Patriots do, by putting them at a playing disadvantage.
Surprisingly, NFL head of communications, Diana Russini was a dissenting voice saying that the league should grasp the moment by having the Mad Hugger Roger Goodell pull the winning teams name out of a Patriot helmet at halftime of the Hall of Fame game.
Russini quipped that that halftime event would draw a larger amount of viewers than any Super Bowl halftime since Carol Channing sang “ Hello Dolly” at the 1970 Super Bowl.
Russini also added that she would absolutely love to interview Sorsby any place at any time.
Meanwhile on the legal front of this clusterf**k.
Sorsby’s Ambulance Chasing barrister is crying foul to all that will listen.
He says that the NFL action violates the Players Union Agreement.
Question, Does Sorsby belong to the union’ I don’t think so.
Meanwhile the league says that the players union agreement gives the NFL the right to not have a supplemental draft if they don’t want one for any particular year.
A bet that Sorsby can make under an alias and he will probably win.
His lawyer, Jeffrey Kessler of the renowned law firm Dewey, Cheatum & Howe will find some judge in New Jersey who is a Jet season ticket holder who will rule against the NFL.
Brigade, don’t bet against it.
Seriously, this is the world we now live in.
A college player knowingly breaks every betting rule the NCAA has on the books.
He knowingly bets on a team while he is a member of. The NCAA says that’s instant expulsion from playing any college sports.
The supposedly aggrieved player probably asked the NFL where he was ranked for the 2026 draft.
Finding out he is probably a 2 or a 3 rounder, he says screw that, I’m taking Texas Tech’s $5 million.
All of a sudden like the world is against him, he is not allowed to play college ball and now commissioner Kraft says “see you at next year’s draft where you will be probably taken in the second or third round.
So now he will sue to gain entry to the NFL. Despite his gambling and rule breaking history.
You know what they say, what goes around, comes around.
Just maybe justice will be served.
David, England in a 0-0 game at MetLife stadium of all places is unacceptable.
Time for you to save the day and offer your services. Team England needs you.
Sorsby simply needs to alert the NFL to the eligibility of his cousin Srendan Borsby, who was an excellent, franchise-level, quarterback for the Bincinnati Cearcats. Full proof plan, I think.
Well said, Bobber. Kraft is the commissioner. The NFL hypocrisy runs deep wrt gambling. And Sorsby has to be the most punished athlete of the decade relative to the crime. If he were an alcoholic or chronic weed user, would this be happening to him? Gambling is legal now. He is addicted and he never bet against his team or in a game he actually played in. And he turned himself in. But he is dealing with the NCAA and the NFL who all of a sudden are taking a stand. Michigan caught cheating to gain competitive advantage. Essentially no penalty. NFL probably has doubled income based on gambling proceeds but they are too good for this kid. Disgusting. And the kid is probably done with the courts too so he will play in Canada or the UFL. I’ll watch him.
I’m sure his lawyer will be rattling his Sabre about a lawsuit.
He probably doesn’t legally have a leg to stand on this year.
Let’s see if he decides to play in Canada for a year if the CFL blocks him over his gambling issues.
Next year will be a different story.
For what we know he legally bet on games.
Breaking an NCAA rule is not exactly breaking the law.
Can the NFL legally hand out a punishment ( suspension) to him.
Tyreek Hill went from being a possible 1st or 2nd rounder to the 5th round because he slapped a girlfriend around in college, I don’t recall the NFL suspending him for it.
Also the NFL’s reason to not have a supplemental draft doesn’t exactly align with Sorsby’s side of the story.
He offered 100% cooperation but the NFL never got back to him weeks ago. The NFL’s timeline is very suspicious.
Like Shakespeare wrote, “ something smells rotten in the state of Denmark “
Douglas, you're making Sorsby out to be a victim of the NCAA and the NFL. That's preposterous. If he's a victim, he's a victim of his own stupidity!
Gambling may be legal for fans, but it isn't for players, referees, or coaches in any sport. No sport can allow the specter of game results being affected by gambling on the part of players or referees or coaches.
The NCAA and NFL are not "all of a sudden" taken a stand. They just found out about it. If they had found out about it earlier, he wouldn't have played this last season at Cincinnati, and there would be zero talk about his being a high draft pick in the NFL draft.
I agree that the NFL shouldn't have aligned itself with betting sites. That sends the wrong message. I think that gambling should be illegal, period. Are there legal houses where people can go and use drugs? No, only some treatment facilities.
Alcohol can affect a player's playing ability, but isn't illegal. If a player shows up for a game intoxicated or hungover, the HC could bench him/her. The league tests for illegal drug usage.
Betting on games has to be a major no-no. If it isn't, players/coaches who have friends on other teams could place bets for them, or their wives or friends could place bets for them, and then the players or coaches could take steps to ensure that they won the bet. There is already the perception among fans that the top teams get preferential treatment by both the league and referees, especially the Patriots, and that some games are "fixed." The NFL cannot allow that perception to get any stronger. This was the only sensible move that they could make. I'm surprised that they did, but glad.
Totaly ridiculous - even if the jets were thinking of making a bid. On Gino - i summary yesterday & today on the Boomer & Gio show - all i head was this is "noise". Gino - thought the whole thing was dumb and a scorned ex lover trying to take Gino down. There was also a pull over by policie that Gino was not to friendly> However, why is it with the Jets Gino now has two 'jerk' issues ? I remember screaming out of my mind when the Jets signed hm - over time i thought this may be O.K. - now i'm back to UGH UGH !
I am absolutely stunned that the NFL cancelled the Supplemental Draft, but am proud of them for doing so. There have to be consequences for Sorsby's betting on games, especially his own team's games. If not, then there could be a slew of future players who try to do the same thing. It has to be made clear to collegiate players that if the bet on games they are ruining their future chances with the NFL, or at least it's going to prevent their from being a high draft pick and costing them millions of dollars.
I was hoping the mess with Geno was going to be over. I should have known that it wouldn't be with Jets' luck.
I guess I am old fashioned. I hate all this gambling on sports. NIL and all the rest. What happened to the purity of the game in all sports? All greedy bastards.
I agree with you as well. The only thing worse is still pretending you are holier than thou after you welcomed all the gambling.
It's the double-faced nature of the NFL's decision. We shouldn't be surprised, but it does make me sad
Not allowing this kid into the NFL and not allowing him to make a living is the height of hypocrisy that needs to be called out much louder.
Was Sorsby given a lifetime ban from the NFL? If not, then what are you talking about? Unless he was banned, he could still sign with a team as a UDFA or he could enter the 2027 NFL draft. Thank you for all you do, David.
I agree 100% with what you said. Your last three words say it all.
I guess we are purists :). And I Iove being that way :)
Trust me Phil, you are not alone. It seems like 50% of today’s advertising centers on gambling. I’m not excusing Sorsby’s decision to gamble but it’s easy to see how easy it was for him to do so.

Typical NFL off-season stuff, at least so far Geno is getting along with teammates-but it is early days.
