Reporting Date Set
Edition #1201: The Jets announce their reporting date and there is an update on the Geno allegations
Good Morning ☕
I found it straight on Monday morning when I hit publish on the Geno Smith allegations that no major media outlet had picked it up.
Then yesterday I started to see the Jets beat report on the story and it all flowed form there.
Yesterday morning the Davie Florida Police Department stated “We were informed yesterday evening that, during review, it was determined that this case is being further investigated by detectives. It is active and we cannot release any additional information at this time.”
The Jets and Geno Smith (as of writing) have yet to release a statement, but even if one does materialise over the next 24 hours, it’ll be something like ‘We’re aware of the allegations and are cooperating with all enquires, we will not be offering any further comment on an ongoing investigation’…we’ve seen it before.
As mentioned on Monday, it’s vital that we reserve judgement on this situation while the facts are obtained. But this is officially an off-season distraction that nobody wanted, especially for a team trying to change the circus narrative. It also throws a huge question mark around availability.
Will Geno be suspended by the NFL, and if he is what do the Jets do? Do they let Cade Klubnik start for the first month of the season? Do they bring in a veteran off the free agent pile? Cooper Rush? Jimmy Garoppolo? Teddy Bridgewater? Do we trade for Andy Dalton or maybe even someone like Will Levis who has some upside to his game?
I’m sure the Jets won’t make any knee-jerk moves and as of right now the allegations against Geno are just that, allegations. There are no charges, no real evidence that he has done anything wrong, and I’m pretty sure we still operate under the innocent until proven guilty philosophy.
But it is an ongoing investigation. And you better believe that Darren Mougey will be weighing up every single option at his disposal right now, despite none of them being overly attractive.
With the NFL cancelling the supplemental draft taking a firm stance on gambling Brendan Sorsby won’t be flying in to save any team. I do find it ironic that a league that is so heavily entrenched with gambling companies is taking this action. I’m only slightly surprised that the press released wasn’t sponsored by MGM or Draft Kings.
The backup QB spot was always one that was going to be scrutinised come training camp but when you introduce the prospect of starting in week one, that scrutiny intensifies.
Just as we were all looking forward to a month off before the real action got underway and we were plugged into the Jets through next years draft, we get this unwelcome surprise.
We’ll wait to hear more but Geno has put the Jets in a bad situation in more ways than one.
NEWS & NOTES 🗞️
The Jets have announced their reporting dates. Rookies will arrive at camp on the 25th of July, followed by the veterans on the 28th of July.
Winning can be contagious and Indiana alum Marcelino McCrary-Ball has been speaking about the Jets adding two National Champions.
"Omar Cooper Jr. got drafted and I said, 'Bring that IU culture here' and when [he and D'Angelo Ponds] got here I told both of them I appreciate what they did because when I think back, I was there for six years and I stuck around because I wanted to ultimately complete and accomplish what they did. It's just really cool, that'll stick with me for a long time."
Armand Membou has been speaking about Toe Tippmann and how his presence helped him during his rookie season:
“I feel like we just were able to bond really quickly, just making that connection on the right side, and it definitely helped me a lot my rookie year, I mean, obviously it started having AVT go down, but then to have Tipp come in and play the way he did all 17 games, it really helped me [to] have that chemistry with my right guard.”
Brandon Stephens thinks the addition of Nashon Wright can help the Jets break the no-INT streak:
“He had five picks last year,” Stephens said of Wright, who had his breakout season as a Bear. “The elephant in the room is we didn’t have any last year, so that’s a focal point going into this season. He’s an incredible player with great instincts, which you need on the outside, as a corner group specifically. He’s a great addition to our defense.”
Aaron Glenn was proud of the effort that the team put in during the OTAs:
“The guys have given me, the coaching staff and themselves everything we’ve asked during the offseason. Their work has been outstanding. I like where they’re at. But I told the guys I want to love where they’re at. And to love it, it’s going to take some time.”

I guess I am old fashioned. I hate all this gambling on sports. NIL and all the rest. What happened to the purity of the game in all sports? All greedy bastards.
Hypocrisy, thy name is the NFL, plain and simple. As much as I applaud them saying no to the supplemental draft, their being willing accomplices to organized gambling and calling them "valued partners" stinks to high heaven and always will. But they are, by nature, a C Y A organization and firm proponents of "do as I say, not as I do", and need to be held at least somewhat accountable.
That said, Sorsby has caused his own demise. Like so many other types of addicts, he found that he LIKED the unrestricted gambling, which has been shown by the numbers of bets he has placed. And he showed the arrogance of many addicts when confronted, first with pressing his valid suspension until some Texas Tech boosters likely had a word with a friendly judge to get the injunction on the suspension. That in turn led to the entire brouhaha of colleges making serious noises about not playing against TT, and the boosters reversed course and had a word with Sorsby's "team", which probably led to his declaring for the supplemental draft.
To be fair, NO ONE has clean hands here, from the NCAA and the ridiculous way the NIL $$$$$ has been handled, to TT probably knowing there was a serious gambling issue, and on and on down the line all practicing the ultimate in CYA. And no one should be painting Sorsby as a victim, because he isn't. There are some extenuating circumstances that further enabled him, but once he started, he couldn't stop, which shows definite character issues. I don't care how talented he might turn out to be, he doesn't need to be within 50 miles of 1 Jet Drive. He's not only a ticking time bomb but has a figurative suicide vest on 24 hours a day.
As far as Geno goes, what's going to happen is going to happen, and that's that. It will either blow over or proceed to a more involved investigation, and the chips will land where they will.
