This was an excellent article. Connor Hughes, in the Athletic, made a comment about McGovern being an excellent center (or very good, something in that vein) and got some opposing comments in the comment section of that article. (Let me see if I can use excellent or comment one more time in this... comment).
This article helped explain where he was basing that opinion on (or the opinion of the Jets at least). It really seems that the internal part of the line is in very good shape and it will all fall on how the tackles play. I'd prefer to have the question marks at the guard positions rather than the tackle positions but having 2 question marks instead of 4-5 is certainly a marked improvement.
I also like the idea of extending him now if that's a viable option.
Just an exceptionally well written article, very nicely done. Surprised and how little Connor played at Center, and find the influences of Munchek & Paradis fascinating. The Jets didn’t draft a Center/ IOL, possibly slated for one of those two fifth rounders we lost in trades. Drafting a Center early , Mangold certainly worked out, Bradbury up in Minnesota not so much, going to monitor Tyler Linderbaum. but McGovern is a fifth round pick, teams have to develop their players and there is not a lot in the Jets Offensive Line Pipeline, I think this scenario supports an extension. CAP inflation is getting crazy, and the cost of players is going up significantly. On the other side of the ledger, McGovern is almost 30, 3 years 30 million 18 million guaranteed with some incentives is fair.
Great article. I've felt exactly this way about McGovern all along. I've tossed the Adam Gase 2020 season out the window for everyone on that Jets roster, including rookies like Perine, Davis and Zuniga.
Do that for McGov and he's a solid Center who's best football might still be ahead of him. He's really only got 3 full years at Center, a relative newcomer. More years in John Benton's system and consistently playing next to AVT and Laken will only improve his play.
I would see about renegotiating and extending him this year. We're getting pretty tight up against the cap and still want to sign a couple of veterans who get cut at the end of training camp.
