Two players made money yesterday. Quinnan Williams, is the straw that stirs the drink for the Defensive Line, he makes every Defensive Lineman better, and the Pass Rush more effective.

Mike White, needs to be re-signed. IMHO MW would have put up 24 points easy yesterday.

Absolutely agree with both of those statements JO.

Quinnen is what makes this pass-rush so effective, but the fact we didn't generate a sack and the defense still only gave up 10 points, 7 on a busted coverage, is pretty amazing.

JO, totally agree. As this game went on I couldn’t help but notice the lack of inside pressure. I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s stat pack to see the pressure totals. My guess is the numbers won’t be impressive for us. As for White, my guess is we see Zach again Thursday as if his ribs were bad enough to ground him yesterday I can’t see how he’s gonna get cleared 4 days later. Plus I really thing Robert Saleh wants to see what he can do in consecutive starts.

Very curious to see, how this QB drama, plays out. Agree that Zach is a lock for Thursday because of the short week. Not sure of the Hawks & Phins, depends somewhat if we are still remotely still in the hunt. MW is similar to Brock Purdy out in SF, he makes the system work. The defensive minded Saleh likes White because of his consistency, and Mike owns the locker room. The arm talent of Zach is undeniable, made a couple of nice throws yesterday. But in 2023 Douglas needs a backup QB that can start, in case Zach falters, that could be Mariota, Minshaw , or Mike White, CAP is TIGHT.

Q could be a 25 million dollar a year player, anything less is a great negotiation. Every other DT is a Free Agent. One will be a Draft Pick, in the first three rounds. The Jets are a very attractive place for free agent DT’s to sign, but once again money is tight

The Jets come out flat at home again. Why does this happen? It’s always been this way... under Rex, Bowles, Gase, Mangini, Carroll... they play with the emotion of a team playing in a swamp.

Expand full comment

It is a problem, especially in a game with playoff implications. Absolutely no excuse to come out flat there.

A few thoughts:

1) Zack is bad. How is it the coaching staff let him get this way without correction?

2) LaFleur seems to have no concept of who his QB is and calls plays that don’t work to his strengths.

3) I put the punt return TD on the offense. Mann had about 10 yards to work with after the offense advanced for negative yards over 3 plays. The focus seemed to be on protection more than coverage given the situation. If we had gained yards Mann would have had 15 yards to work with and the timing/coverage would have been better.

4) The 4th qtr 4th down TD is shocking considering our offense scored on what was essentially the same play a bit earlier in the quarter. Can’t say we didn’t see that one coming.

5) Clock management non existent.

6) I’ve seen fans rip The Leg - seriously? 58 yards in Mid-December outside in the Meadowlands and they act like it’s a gimme. Please.

7) This offense needs an improved QB coach and needs a better run game coordinator. I like their flashes of creativity but prefer consistency more.

I think fans are getting a bit crazy with kickers. I know that the current kicker is better than ever before; but 58 yards outside period, much less in the Winter in NJ, is a 50/50 proposition at best.

Expand full comment

Absolutely right. I think it's the dome effect, people see these 60 yarders being made regularly in domes and then there is just an expectation.

Expand full comment

On #3... on the defense too. They let Detroit drive 70 yds to the 1yd line. Offense couldn’t move it and Mann had to punt with a short snap. All 3 phases state the blame for the punt return TD.

When is this defense going to get a turnover again???

In over 50 years of watching football I don't believe I've see a team that botched the final 2 minutes so clearly. It's malpractice to leave time outs on the clock. After the first down conversions they should have taken time outs, right? It must have cost us 3 plays.

Expand full comment

Absolutely. I just have no idea what Saleh was thinking, it's almost like he was playing for a tie and didn't want to leave any time on the clock after the FG. At least that's the way I read it at the time.

Q loss hurt. Why not kick JFM inside and play JJ or Clemons at Edge?

Expand full comment

I do not understand why the Jets don't even consider starting Chris Streveler at QB. He's A former CFL star and did well in the preseason, he seems like a real gamer. I read somewhere that the Jets would have to change their entire offense if Streveler was to start. If that's the case, then why is he even on their practice squad if you're bound and determined not to try him?

LOL - 7-10 still worse then Gase 7-9 (thank you )

Mark it down they not winning another game this year cause they are the same old jets and stink

You can't let criticism dictate your comments. I know I follow your exceptional blog specifically because you have called a spade a spade.

Zack is what he is and his fans, whomever they are(???) can't alter reality.

I was at the game and here were some of my observations:

1. Braden Mann's punt from the endzone was rushed so it wouldn't get blocked. The Jet Defense was awesome to keep the Lions out of the endzone on the previous drive. The Jet Offense failed and lost 2 yards prior to that punt. Bad punt but NOT Mann's fault!!!!! I believe he had a lot less room standing at the back of the endzone.

2. The Jet Defense played well but that 51 yard reception to the TE for a TD was inexcusable! Stop them on 4th and 1 and the game is over. Quincy and CJ both bit on the run fake to the opposite side.

3. Captain Obvious: ZW still has a way to go. The talent is there but he is not better than MW, period! He is young and maybe it will click for him next year. The Jets are not giving up on him and neither am I.

4. Tip your cap to the Lions Defense. They won the line of scrimmage and stopped the run for most of the game.

5. The Jets had the World cup match on every other monitor in the stadium. Good job!

6. The Jets Flight Crew Cheerleaders have been grounded! They haven't appeared once and there hasn't been any word on why. Bad job Jets! I like the Cheerleaders.

7. Greg the leg almost made that kick. It had the distance but a little left.

Haven't had a chance to read the article yet (not sure I will as I typically don't like to read about losing haha). But, it's just frustrating; I think this is a good team that should make the playoffs. I know it's a good stepping stone season, but those really don't work in the NFL because change happens often; so we can't just assume they'll improve of this season next year; especially with the question mark.

Zach played well if we assume he's the backup but he didn't play well enough to be a starter. To my untrained eyes, White is just a far better option at the position at the moment. He's predictable and gets the ball out. Zach has ability and can make plays and played better today than he did against NE, but he's too unpredictable and is good for at least one egregiously bad play. I don't think he's the reason we lost today in that he didn't completely drive the offense down (we couldn't run the ball at all), but he didn't do enough against a pretty below average defense.

Gotta agree with you guys. The slow starts on defense are troubling. While the overall defensive effort was very good that opening drive was not fun to watch. They pretty much did as they pleased until we finally stiffened at the goal line. Put the offense in a terrible hole that led to the cheap punt return. Putting Zach in a hole like that was a recipe for disaster. While he did make a few ZW highlight reel throws he was all over the place as well. Even the deep pass to Uzomah was under thrown. He made a nice play coming back for it. And the duck he threw up that Michael Carter caught looked like another pic 6 in waiting. Anyway, thanks again for sharing these thoughts and for commiserating with us once again!

I'm sick and tired of walking out of that stdium after a loss. There is no two ways about it - this is THE SAME OLD JETS ! Nothing has inproved in 2 years under this regime and nothing ever will. A pimple face kid playing madden would have called a time out - Saleh was lost in space. There have been 3 punts returned for TDs this year - 2 by the Jets. Douglas and Salah dont get that Berrios and Mann STINK ! Niether White or Wilson is a starting QB in the NFL. There are always 10,000 injuries to the tune of 5 per game and always to the most key players. The Giants are going to the playoffs and the Jets aren't but everyone wants to say the Jets have more talent BS ! They don't. The jets are finsihing the season on a 7 game losing streak and 8 of 9. That alone should get the head coach fired. Adam Gase wnt 7-9; 7-11 is worse !

I know you're pissed but you added on an extra loss! 7-10 is the worst we can be.

I think we must have been watching different games. What I saw was a QB who was throwing up passes downfield for grabs who was bailed out by remarkable athletes (Wilson and Moore) finding a way to beat the defense to the ball for a chunk play. Just look at the last play before the missed final second fg. Moore was no where near where Zack threw up a duck but he found a way to meet the ball yards from where he had been when it was thrown. Similarly GW found a way through sheer athleticism to make receptions on balls just up for grabs.

ZW's stats, which at barely 50% completed were miserable, were, to me at least, padded by remarkable receptions by gifted receivers and showed once again why ZW is a bust.

Nobody seems to feel that Mike White will be cleared to play by Thursday so I expect more pain and elimination looking ahead.

You know Philipp I can't disagree with you, but I get accused of being too negative on Zach and get absolutely killed for not giving credit, so I at least wanted to say he made a couple of throws where I thought he at least moved the chains. But as mentioned, there were multiple tunrover worthy plays, he still threw off his back foot, he still missed receivers and at the end of the day he drove the offense to 17 points against the 31st ranked scoring defense in football.

Mike being cleared for Thursday would be a bit of a minor miracle by the sounds of it, and the Jaguars have their tails up after taking down the Cowboys.

hello all,

well I didn't jump off the ledge - yet. Long/short - if Mike White was playing yesterday, the Jets win this. The team was flat, the offense was flat - who do i put that on? Zach, pure and simple. Yes he made big throws, sandlot throws like when he was in BYU. But was he in command against that defense? No.

Someone over on GangGreenNation called it right, though, about what Wilson should do in this game to win. Michael Nania, I believe it was. He wrote that Wilson would need to do just what he was good at, throwing deep, off-script passes because the Lions were weakest in the secondary (whereas they were very strong against the middle/quick slants. Nania actually posted that Wilson would do best with long developing plays (no 2.57 release here, instead the longer stuff that got Wilson in trouble against every other NFL defense he's played...). So he got 300+ yards - so what? You think Belicheck or Campbell will "... geez, we gave up too many yards to that kid and his cannon; let's focus on that..." - nah, I don't think so. They got a win against us.

Me, I don't give a hoot about his stats - I want my team to win. Oh, and I ran a stop watch on a few of his passes - still likes to take over 3 seconds to release it. Plus, what ITF is Wilson doing staring down his receivers so hard that the Defensive backs can't help but get the interception or at least, the PBU?

The players were different with Zach at the helm. and not for the better, either, imho. And the effin announcers, how full of excreta they are! They're all, "look he's gotten better, his mechanics are better..." Then Zach fluffs a couple of easy flat passes the way he always does. And yeah, a couple of almost-interceptions from yesterday, and I'm not even doing this writeup the same way.

Plus, as I'm watching this offense under him, my gut feeling is no where near as certain as it is with White. With White, I watch the TV and no matter the situation, there is an expectation that our Jets will come through this. With Wilson last night (as in every other game), it's a sense of impending disaster, of him effing it up... misery incarnate.

I don't know about you guys, but to me, when Zach botches it up, the rest of the team does encourage him, but it seems... listless. Likewise when he does something good... the love just isn't there - yet.

I don't hold Garrett stomping his feet on that errant pass; Wilson should have put it right in his hands). Nor am i privy via my limited TV view to what was said afterward on the sidelines.

Which brings me via sideways-segue to the Coach. Saleh had no choice but to start Wilson in this game; a couple fractured ribs to your QB can do that to the man. And he's going to navigate the press conferences, do what he has to do, but Coach, if you're reading this, please, please... Mike White is our Man!

Mike White is a backup that’s it - Jets still lose that game with him playing cause all Mike White dies is get hurt and lose games

Where do we start.

Been a fan for 59 years. I thought the last time I said “ I’ve seen it all”, I wouldn’t have to say it again. Unfortunately today, the Jets did the unfathomable and snatched a defeat from the jaws of victory.

A few points, the Jets playoff chances ended in Denver. When Breece Hall went down, so did a shot at the playoffs. Hall was a difference maker, a home run hitter. The fact he still leads the Jets in rushing shows how deficient the Jets rushing game is. The fact that Vera-Tucker got hurt in the same game was a double whammy. Offensive line is the one group of a football team that needs continuity. It seems the Jets have different starters on the line every week. Hopefully next year both Hall and Tucker come back with a vengeance to continue their all pro playing ability.

I think the only thing saving Wilson’s butt for this season and next is his contract. For any one to say he had a good game yesterday, they are only kidding themselves.

He still is throwing off of his back foot. His accuracy is non existent. He definitely has no touch especially on crossing patterns, everything is fastballs. The fact he only had one interception is a minor miracle. When the defense brings heat, he gets very careless with the ball and panics. He did make some pretty outrageous passes for completions but on the whole, he still needs a ton of work to finesse his work. I don’t know if he has it in himself. He still is very careless with the ball.

A broken record on this one. There was two definite pass interferences in the first half. One against Garrett Wilson on the first pass thrown to him and definitely on Smith in the end zone before the end of the first half. I know players/ teams get fined for speaking out about officials but Saleh must complain in his press conferences, almost every week it is late hits, today it was the non pass interference calls.

Speaking of Saleh, he had his worst week as a HC this week. How he handled saying Zach was the starter this week, his making Flacco the back up, the nonsense about Wilson going 16 for 16 in a bowl game 4 years ago in college, ( please stop the pandering), your players can see BS when you say it and lastly his terrible

use/ non use of time outs on the last drive was a disaster. The fact his kicker is trying a 58 yard field goal as time is expiring while he still has a time out in his pocket was so Bowles like. Why didn’t he use his last timeout so his fg team could set up properly. Did he have to take that timeout home or saving it for a Xmas gift. Bad week coach, hope you learn from this or that your timeout coach learned from it.

Expand full comment

He had already used a timeout to stop the clock originally; he couldn't use another one as that's a 15 yard penalty.

Thanks for the information. I didn’t know he had called a timeout but my point was that he had numerous opportunities when he should have called time outs on that drive and he didn’t. They did him no good at the post game news conference
