Good morning gentlemen🥱 Yes, once again Big Ron brings up the rear.😂 It’s really cool to see such interesting comments after a great article from our fearless leader. CG58 Jet is truly a character. I love a great laugh to start my day😂🤣 Goos stuff. I didn’t want to be a Debbie Downer but since J.O mentioned the shoulder concerns I have to agree they do concern me. That said, I have to believe the Jet medical staff feels good about that situation as with JMS also available at pick 43 JT was still the pick.
Since we don’t really know what the Jet brain trust has in mind. Plus the fact that the obvious off season’s biggest news story after the Rodgers acquisition has been the who’s who offensive tackle conundrum.
With all of this going on, the one name that you barely heard is that of Laken Tomlinson. One of the Jet’s biggest free agent acquisition last year, his season was a minor disaster. He probably slipped thru the cracks, attention wise, since he didn’t miss a play last year. In fact he hasn’t missed a game in five years. But he did grade out as one of the worst NFL offensive guards last season.
Even though he was given a minimum one year contract this year, that doesn’t mean that McGovern last season wasn’t a better center than Tomlinson a guard.
The only thing protecting Tomlinson right now is his contract. His contract probably makes him uncuttable but that doesn’t guarantee him a starter spot.
Could Tippmann also be auditioning for a guard position.
Ironically McGovern was drafted as guard coming out of college but has basically played mostly center as a pro. Tippmann though drafted as a center doesn’t mean he can’t be a terrific pro as a guard.
I know the most reasonable argument for benching Tomlinson is his contract.
Yes, you play big contract guys but the problem here is the protection of Mr Rodgers. If he isn’t doing the job, bench him.
Saleh did say a few times the best five will start
Unless David throws us a curveball tomorrow and has no column. I doubt he would be celebrating America’s birthday lol.
So I want to wish everyone a Happy 4th of July
Just kidding David. I do wonder how, if you were a reporter back then, you would have written about the Colonists free agent acquisition of Lafayette, the British acquisition of Benedict Arnold ( or should I say Belichick Arnold for all of us Jet fans) and of course the most dastardly deed by the colonists, the Boston Tea Party. Tea, a British food staple, destroyed, thrown into Boston Harbor, oh the horror. That would be comparable in todays world of shutting down all Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks for most Americans.
Joe Tippman is, actually, one of my favorite Jets draft picks in the last few years. I absolutely loved the AVT pick from 2021 and the Max Mitchell pick from last year. Tippman, though, is an offensive line coach's dream. The guy has the profile of a vocal and beloved leader, is, insanely, probably the best athlete of all of our big uglies (on their side of the line, honestly), and comes from the kind of pedigreed program that does nothing but crank out fantastic offensive linemen, and has an excellent mullet. Everything about this guy tells me he'll beat McGovern out for the starting center spot during camp, and I'm all for it.
McGovern, actually, could wind up stepping in for Tomlinson if he struggles. I think Connor McGovern coming back on such a cheap deal could be a godsend for this offensive line. Imagine the kind of athleticism they'll be bringing to the table if McGovern is starting in place of Tomlinson (admittedly, not the most stellar athlete out there). McGovern, coming out of Mizzou, was one of the most athletic linemen in his class. Now, you're making him the swing interior lineman who can, basically, fill in for any of the three interior spots. That is an insane luxury to have. Additionally, he's a, hopefully, former starting center, so he brings an absurd degree of football IQ to either of the spots flanking the pivot.
I love the way this offensive line is shaking out. I think Duane Brown, fully recovered from the shoulder injury he played through ALL of last season, is going to be a pleasant surprise, AVT finally gets a full year of just being an All-Pro guard, Max and Mekhi can push one another for the starting spot on the right edge, and the added competition at center and LG is going to be huge for this group. An offensive line room is a unique place and I think this group fits the mold.
Excellent post. I share your enthusiasm, and belief in our OL. I differ with you on McGovern, however. He started out as an OG in the NFL with Denver, and wasn't good. He even admits that he's a better center than he is OG. I think that there's a chance that he doesn't even make the team. Both Schweiter and Colon can play both C and OG. The latter has less experience and may not be as good as McGovern or Schweitzer, but I think that Schweitzer may be better than McGovern.
I think McGovern, primarily because of his salary is tradable in October. Colon is possibly the most underrated lineman, JD is looking for a role for Colon in 2024
I think I might be first out the gate! (I know, i'm gettin' a little brassy, but that's just confidence, eh?)
Excellent article on Tippman.
I think before long, we'll be saying he's Kevin Mawae V2.0.
Love his character; I think he may just be the next Indomitable Jet. I don't give that description out lightly - Kevin Mawae had it, Curtis Martin did, too. I think Garrett Wilson has that quality as well. It's one of my favorite words in the language, I mean, think about it - "impossible to subdue or defeat". Never Quits. Hunnert Percent to the whistle.
I CAN'T WAIT to see this young man pulling downfield, as the lead blocker for Breece Hall and the rest of the Jets RB stable - just DARING any opposing defender to try and run through him to get to Hall.
Chills, brother. Expectations. Smilin' like a kid here, waiting on a 3rd dollop of Pralines and Cream at the local Baskin Robbins.
So, here's something i found yesterday that just had me laughing so hard I was dyin' with tears in my eyes. I'm emailing with another JetsWay blogger, Steve fm CT, and chattin' Revis. On a whim, I google up info on him; didn't really know just who among the NY Sports Media or Newspapers first coined and printed the phrase "Revis Island".
So, ya'll know how Google, when you're searching for something, shows other links that might have but the vaguest connection to the original request? Look at what pops up on the radar, "related" to my question about the "Revis Island" label ---
" WHAT NFL PLAYER HAD KIDS AFTER A VASECTOMY? "
> JetBrothers, before I even clicked the link, I was already shoutin' CROMARTIE!!! and laughin' my ass off. And the Google Note reads:
> ANTONIO CROMARTIE
> " Not even SCIENCE can stop Antonio Cromartie from having kids. Despite undergoing a vasectomy, the Jets defensive back, Terricka, pregnant again... "
and guys, he got her pregnant with TWINS!
Can his boys swim, or what? LOL HAHAHAHA
Ok, enough a dat; ya'll know that I kinda already live a bit out in Left Field. But you can add this Jets Item to the list that includes the ButtFumble, Walt Michaels farting farther than his punter can kick, Gastineau's Roughing the Passer call against Cleveland in the '86 season, and of course, the "Mud Bowl" (may Don Shula's 'nards roast in Hell...), and of course, the biggest draft blunder of all, picking Kyle Brady when Warren Sapp (and Derrick Brooks and Ty Law were still available, too) was on the board. Insert " WE WANT SAPP! " Jets chant at the Felt Forum here to really rub salt in the wound.
But yeah, the google search result def deserves a spot in the pantheon of "ONLY THE JETS" items on my shelf.
First, I can’t believe how fortunate the Jets were to land Tippman with the 43rd pick. Both Tippman and John Michael Schmidtz were available at 43., which may speak to the very curious devaluation that we saw at the Center position in Free Agency. JMS is a much more experienced Center, has more experience at Guard, but Tippman’s upside is undeniable , and he is a perfect fit for a wide zone system. There has to be a concern that Joe’s shoulders are held together with duct tape, but this is one strong man. I find a 455 pound Bench Press phenomenal, this is a very strong man that can run very well, just a very good fit. The Jets are in for a long 20 game season, my hope is that McGovern initially beats out Joe , with Tippman taking over in game eight , and finishing strong. Tippman is the best thing that could happen to the Jets running game.
If Tippman is the second coming of Nick Mangold, then start him. But having a veteran center start the season is the smart move given the all-in attitude of the Jets. They don't need a rookie center doing OJT in the most important Jet season in 13 years. And keeping AR upright is the most important thing right now. There will be issues at tackle, but keeping the center of the line solid will be a good start. And if Tomlinson shows the same poor technique he did last year, bench him and then next man up.
AR is the QB, protecting him is the priority, this Offensive Line is unsettled, could use the veteran presence of McGovern. Tippman can learn from the sidelines for the first month of the season and gradually work him in.
Absolutely is...but I wouldn't be so sure that McGovern is the better prospect in terms of protecting AR. We saw numerous miscommunications last year from the protection calls and while CMG was better than most give him credit for, Tippmann's calling card is his pass protection.
New system , New Offensive Line Coach. Veterans help with the installation of a new system. Once again, I’m proposing McGovern for only the first month maybe two. Connor is only 30 , and after a disastrous FA, needs to reestablish himself in the market for a decent contract, motivated. It could be Rodgers call.
As far as the under 25 team, I can understand including Chase and Jefferson, but don't think they should have ignored Wilson. They could have given him an honorable mention.
I think Hasselbeck makes some good points regarding the Jets and Hard Knocks.
First and foremost, I'm rooting for whomever the players are to start and what will be best for the Jets, but I'm rooting for Tippman. I think he could possibly be better than McGovern day one both in terms of blocking and calling line protections.

Strange thing about that shoulder injury is that it sounds very significant but yet it's rarely been mentioned since he was drafted.
