Tremendous job, David. Hire him. Love everything about him. Did not realize he came from community college - major plus for me. Jets won’t do better. Done deal.

Aiden Hutchinson has been IR all year for Detroit. Glenn seams to be running an aggressive blitzing 3-4, with a lot of man to man coverage. The Jets do not have a NT. Huge change in philosophy and technique for the Jets Defense. Aaron is used to better Safeties, Jets would need to upgrade. Does Glenn have the contacts to upgrade the Offensive Coaching staff ?

I think with Glenn having been in the league for 20+ years either as a player or coach, his contacts should be pretty robust, especially as he seems to spend a lot of time on the road in the off-season meeting offensive coaches in both the pros and college. Obviously Ben Johnson is out of the equation but that Lions offensive staff will have plenty of talent, it's never just a one man operation when it comes to a successful unit. Could someone lile Tanner Engstrand (focus of tomorrow's newsletter) be brought over with Glenn, he's in that system with Johnson, he's been the passing game coordinator for one of the most lethal passing games in football. Glenn + Engstrand would be risky, but I'm ready to take a few risks personally.

Engstrand is intriguing. Concerned that Glenn was a Defensive Back Coach for New Orleans for four years. The Saints could be a strong competitor

Good questions. On another board where I read and post, a poster shared something from some preseason info regarding the Lions' D. It said that he ran a variety of schemes, but most 5-2 and 4-3. I don't know what the truth of the matter is. Not having Hutchinson and the pass rushers up front, may have forced Glenn to try the 3-4 to try to get some pressure on opposing QBs. I like what David wrote about Glenn this morning, but I still want an offensive HC. Even if Glenn is truly a very good HC candidate, if there is an equally good HC candidate who is a former OC, why not hire him? Most of the HC hires in Jets history have been DCs. Off the top of my head, I can think of only 3 who were offensive guys, and none were good: Joe Walton, Richie Kotite, and Adam Gase. Most of the defensive guys haven't been good either. That's one of the major reasons the team has sucked for so long, but mostly they've been much better on the defensive side than the offensive side. That crap needs to change. It's just totally stupid imo to keep doing things the same way and expect a different result.

I would be excited if Glenn was hired. But I was excited when Salah was hired too. Similar backgrounds and successes. However Salah failed to maintain’all gas no brakes’. He couldn’t manage a game, make adjustments, hire good coaches, and was extremely arrogant he could’coach up’ any player (hence all the UDFAs). For me, a Defense background is not a negative but the next coach has to be a better manager than we’ve had.

Yes, I know I sound like a broken record and I am in no way saying no to Glenn but since Glenn is so well known to Tannenbaum and other so called experts, his interview/ interviews should mostly be about his OFFENSIVE philosophy and who will be on his offensive staff.

The only negative you could ever say about Glenn would be that the Marino spike ball td was thrown at the player he was covering.

Glen got fooled, the whole defense got fooled, the Jets fans in the stadium got fooled and the NBC announcers got fooled.

This has been the biggest problem with this organization since Parcells left. They hire good defensive coaches to be HCs and their offensive staffs are mediocre at best. It also hasn’t help that the GMs doing the drafting leave a lot to be desired.

Look how smart Todd Bowles has gotten due to a front office that drafts well and he has a very good OC. And please no anti Bowles remarks , three years HC, 3 years first place in division with Bucs.

When Bowles was Jet HC, he pleaded with Mr Coffee to trade up, to draft Alvin Kamara. ☕️ told him, I got my eyes on someone better, more explosive. Yes, how can Jet fans ever forget #18 Ardarius Stewart. Gee, I guess Bowles wasn’t that dumb as Jet HC.

Johnson and Coen presently not interviewing with the Jets. Since Johnson is friends with Gase and Coen is Bowles OC, is it possible they have heard about dysfunctional Woody from their associates and let it be known that they are not interested.

The Torch and Pitchfork Brigades Stat of the year.

Baffling #Jets stats for this season:

32nd in rushing attempts

32nd (by far) in red zone rushing attempts

Breece Hall never had 20 rushing attempts in a game.

Five times he had 10 or fewer rushes.

I guess Rodgers could have changed a few calls at the line of scrimmage.

The HC hunt quote of the week from Brian Fitzpatrick

Ryan Fitzpatrick is one of the most respected people in the NFL. He played under Brian Flores.

This is what he said about him being a HC candidate again:

- Became a dictator

- Would struggle to get a reference from another coach in Miami

- Became unrecognizable

Good luck

Lastly, the Torch and Pitchfork Brigade question of the week

The answer is NO

Here is the question.

Will the NFL penalize the Patriots for bringing in two minority out of work coaches to satisfy the Rooney Rule, so they could hire Vrabel tomorrow.

With regard to the Marino spike, Glenn was warned about a potential spike by the HC or DC before the play, and the HC or DC was yelling before the ball was snapped to watch out for the spike. So he didn't listen. I never was a fan of Glenn. I saw him give up a lot of big passes and make dumb plays. I was truly surprised to read the stats that David posted and all the good things about Glenn in David's column today. It sounds like he has worked hard to learn and improve, so I'm willing to give him a chance IF he isn't conservative, doesn't try to win with D, and brings in an excellent OC and QB Coach. If he's the hire and is like every other former DC we've had as HC, I hope he fails miserably and is fired within 2 years.

I was at the spike game! Told my wife he was gonna fake it and throw it! If I knew that I can’t imagine the Jets didn’t? I just think their receiver made a play. That play is so overrated

I’m at the point I would be amenable to almost anyone but Rex. Going “Back in Time” was a fun movie but it’s not something I want our organization to do. I understand we needed outside guidance in our search for new leadership but when I learned Mike Tannenbaum was going to be involved my enthusiasm waned. Hiring a ESPN talking head to guide the search does not give me confidence for a good result. Tannenbaum was brought here by Parcells to manage the cap. I recall reading up on him at the time and there was no reference to him having any personnel background or experience . When Parcells bolted the Jets pivoted to him in desperation. The results were initially mixed but went south when Rex started getting more involved with picking the groceries. The thing that really concerns me is his connection and affinity to Rex! I like Aaron Glenn, he has been doing HC interviews the last two off seasons. He kind of reminds of K.C’s former RB turned OC that kept applying for HC jobs but ending up as the bridesmaid every time. Forgot his name but I’m sure Bobber will know it😂 I was listening to former Jet assistant coach /exec Pat Kirwin and his partner ( former Bear/Steeler QB Jim Miller on the NFL Network radio show ( Moving the chains on Cirrus/XM Monday- Fridays 3 to 7pm) and they had some interesting thoughts on Rex becoming our next HC. Neither one of them liked the idea as they felt he wasn’t the guy who was going to prepare the team the way it was needed on a week to week basis. Coaching today requires adjustments for different opponents. Rex being Rex will want to run the ball on first down and run it again on 2nd and only throw the ball if necessary to avoid turning it over and putting his defense in a bad spot. I couldn’t imagine Aaron Rodgers being a fan of that. So if Rex does get the job we can definitely say good bye to AR’s😂 I should apologize for my Bobber like mini newsletter. It’s never a good thing when the readers post is longer that the author’s newsletter😂 Have a great day guys!

You were referring to Eric Bieniemy. He was Washington’s OC last year but was fired when the new regime came in.

Was UCLA’s OC this year but was fired in December. Boy did the twinkle of his star dim rather fast

Expand full comment

Bieniemy was an interesting one, came from a great system but with the lack of play-calling experience he was a risk for anyone, then you hear that he wasn't very good in interviews and you start thinking that maybe it's no surprise that he hasn't succeeded. It's a lot harder when you don't have Andy Reid behind you.

Eric is the poster child of hiring a coach to be OC without play calling experience. Does Mike LaFleur ring a bell.

I also heard that he wasn’t particularly adaptable to players who don’t respond well to his way of coaching. I think I remember hearing that he was a huge yeller/screamer and it rubbed part of the offense the wrong way.

Honestly I never thought he was any good! He was KC’s OC in name only. Andy Reid took care of him.

Parcells named Tanny GM to keep him from leaving and going to work for the Bucs (or maybe it was the Jags). I thought it terrible at the time. Tanny drafted some very good players, but he also left the cupboard bare with his 3-4 player drafts, and then there was giving Rex a pick in each draft.

Exactly!👍 Ge let Rex pick a WR from some obscure college who got cut almost immediately! He also gave Rex too much input on draft days which obviously proved disastrous

Saleh May not be a good HC candidate, but he is an excellent DC. Applaud his move to Green Bay to work with the Offense, work on your shortcomings immediately, hope he gets a little double dipping with his salary. Robert has some contacts in Jacksonville, he was their Linebacker Coach for three years. The other Coordinator in Detroit, Johnson, could find Trevor Lawrence attractive, and wind up in Jacksonville. Find Johnson as HC and Saleh as DC a dynamic duo for the Jags

A general feeling around the league is that GM Baalke is toxic and should have been fired. He supposedly is like a mini Woody. Feeling is that candidates could get second thoughts about accepting job.

Apparently ownership endorses Balke, housecleaning needs to be thorough and complete. Johnson, has is choice, maybe it will be Chicago

Jacksonville owner had a great quote yesterday

The Jacksonville Jaguars won't give quarterback Trevor Lawrence the type of influence Aaron Rodgers is believed to have had with the New York Jets as they search for a new head coach.

"This isn't, let's be clear, a second coming of Aaron Rodgers 2.0," Jaguars owner Shad Khan told reporters Monday. "We're going to do the right thing for the team."

Was a big believer in all the Trevor hype, has been a disappointment. Nice find, of that quote

Expand full comment

I never was a big believer in Trevor Lawrence. Clemson's games were televised every Saturday, and I saw every single one of his games for 2 years, and I saw all his flaws. Zach looked like a much better QB. Of course what I couldn't see in Zach's games was that he had trouble processing and reading Ds. I really hope that Zach gets a chance to play somewhere either this year or next so I can see if he has improved and fixed some of his issues. I'm not sure that processing speed is something that can be fixed or improved, but perhaps it's tied to confidence and confidence in one's ability to read the Ds, and Zach certainly had lost his confidence with the way he played and the way he was treated by the Jets' CS.

I still think that if he had ben able to sit for his first year or two behind a good QB, and the Jets had a good CS that could develop a QB, that he would have been a very good QB for the Jets.

I'm really wamring up to Glenn being the HC. We need a leader or men, & cultural changer and being a former Jets all the better. I'm seeing Glenn and Borganzi as a GM as Cimini's best guess as the winners for the jobs. In suppoert of what Davis has been saying McCown as OF with Genn i alsi like now. Note of the Rooney rule: Flores is suing the league for exactly what the Patriots did yesterday - make a joke of 'checking the boxes'. They didnt even give, who would be a top choice for a HC a interview, Either get rid of the rule of make team accountable for breaking it.

David, looks like the Jets aren't going to interview Agnew. That's a shame. I would like Glenn. I think he might be going to New Orleans. I think Salah is a minority and he qualifies for the Rooney rule. No way he gets the head job in Jacksonville. However as mentioned here a Johnson/Salah combo is likely. I also wouldn't mind Flores. It's embarrassing that they even interviewed Rex. I hope they interview Klingsbury? And if they hire Borgonzi from KC is he going to bring along Nagy?

The head coach rarely develops the quarterback. The offensive staff does. Ideally, the head coach, regardless of his background (offense or defense) has an overall idea of the kind of complimentary football he’d like the team to play and hires coordinators (who, in turn, bring in their position staffs) who will implement that vision. It’s more art than math, honestly, but it takes management skills. Paying attention to whether the head coach is an offensive or defensive guy is missing the forest for the trees.

David, excellent write up on Glenn. I was totally opposed to him, but you have opened my mind to him. I still can't fathom why you like Flores however. How can you not see that the Jets need to focus on the offense and having a CS that can develop a young QB? How many failed HCs who were former DCs does it take?
