Confirmed that Jets will interview Aaron Glenn for a 2nd time tomorrow.

He's the only known candidate to have a 2nd interview confirmed.

After last weeks snooze fest, of five out of six terrible football games, the NFL was back at top of its game with 4 very entertaining games that had 4 absolutely different story lines.

The Chiefs and the much too friendly officials.

Saquon Barkley running through the snow.

The coming out party for Jayden Daniels at Detroit

The never ending mistakes of the Ravens in Buffalo.

One good thing about the Jets not making the playoffs is if they did, they probably would have had to play against KC and today the Torch and Pitchfork Brigade would be screaming bloody murder about getting screwed by the officials again.

Before the 8 o’clock kickoff Saturday in Detroit, there was a multitude of Jet fans who wanted Aaron Glenn to be the Jets new HC.

By midnight, based on comments made on X( Twitter ), it seems that 50% of the multitude have thrown Glenn under the bus, a big red double decker London bus, cheerio.

David as already has given us the reasons why Detroit’s defense was so horrible on Saturday but he forgot one other important point.

Aiden Hutchinson played only 4 total games, getting a season ending injury in game 5.

When he went down, he was leading the Lions with 7 1/2 sacks.

The season ended with him being the Lions sack leader with those 7 1/2 sacks. Just think of the Jets losing JJ, irreplaceable. Week 2 against Tampa he had 4 1/2 sacks.

Another reason for Detroit’s loss was the four interceptions they threw. Three by Goff and one by Williams the wide receiver.

The Williams interception came on a triple reverse trick play called in the fourth by the most sought after OC of the last 20 years, Ben Johnson.

When plays as that are successful, the OC is called brilliant, when they fail miserably the remarks are usually along the lines of “ what the f**k is he doing”.

He is still in demand.

Just to show how fast amnesia sets in with some fans basically that same Lions defense completely shut down Darnold and marauding Vikings two weeks earlier.

The problem with that Lion loss is that Woody, the Grand Wizard of Football could totally turn negatively against Glenn. As noted in previous posts that Jet cap that he wears might be a little too tight, causing actual negative thinking.

Never heard of Jon-Eric Sullivan until David Wyatt- Hupton mentioned him a few weeks ago.

When Tennessee fired their GM, Hyphenated Sullivan was one of the first people they reached out to.

Is it possible that Agnew was waiting to see what the Lions would accomplish this year before agreeing to interview.

Maybe Tannenbaum should get on his phone today and find out. It wouldn’t hurt.

With all this hyphenated names around here and the NFL, maybe I can change my name Bobber- Clueless Contributor. There you go I’m hyphenated.

Spot on, people had issues with him blitzing considering Daniels completes 65% of his passes when blitzed, well with all the injuries the Lions were incapable of generating pressure unless they blitzed and as good as Daniels is against the blitz, he completed 75% of his passes for 3,126 yards with 19 touchdowns to 4 INT when kept clean, so had the Lions not blitzed he would have picked them apart anyway, especially with a UDFA taking his first snaps in the secondary. I mean I'm not sure what people expected him to do, but having a hot take about him straight away was more important than actually thinking it through and looking at the context.

Exactly, David. It's like they think that a great Coach/Coordinator is a miracle worker. That he can take a a groups of 3rd or 4th string position players and get them to play at the same level as the starters. Some of those players had also only been with the Lions for a few weeks. They were signed late in the season following all the injuries. Glenn said that the problem wasn't their not knowing the playbook, it was that they couldn't play in the same style or level as the players they had replaced.

Loved every game this week. Jayden Daniels is a rookie, Kliff Kingsbury’s stock is through the roof.

Funny thing Clueless Chris and MaxCagnan interviewed Kingsbury when Bowles was still HC.

Kingsbury supposedly was uncomfortable with the interview because Bowles was still employed.

One thing about Hyphenated Sullivan, if he is hired, it’s going to be interesting how he handles Rodgers, he definitely knows him, lol.

Bobber, another gem today. Thanks.

With regards to Woody, don't you know that he said that he thinks that "thinking is overrated"? LOL

With regards to the trick play, I can understand why Johnson called it. Washington was stopping Detroit's offense. Goff was having a bad game. The Lions players were getting tight and probably down. He thought that the trick play would be fun, that perhaps Washington wouldn't be ready for it, and if it worked it could give the Lions a spark and the momentum.

I agree that Woody should call Agnew, but what David said that he had seen Agnew say may be accurate. He may just want to stay in Detroit and continue learning from Holmes before he gets a GM job. But you're right, he may have been waiting to see what happened. That's an excellent thought! With probably both Johnson and Glenn getting HC jobs elsewhere, the Lions probably will take a step back next year. Agnew may decide that it's time to look for that GM job after all.

In general, sports fans can be very fickle, and they aren't know for deep thinking. Too many are half drunk when they watch games or when they post. They are prone to knee-jerk reactions. When I read other Jets fan sites than this one, I feel like I lose IQ points some of the comments are so dumb and lacking in knowledge, understanding or reasoning ability. That's why this is the best site.

Jeff Ulbrich is now the DC of the Atlanta Falcons, mildly surprised that got that gig. Atlanta is not a good Defensive Football Team, they are a 3-4 team, very limited CAP, however, they have Matt Judon and a couple of good Safeties. Jeff could lure a couple of Free Agent Jets, down to Atlanta, Echols would be the top of the list. Good Luck Jeff. Significantly more concerned that Aaron Whitecotton our Defensive Line Coach is taking an interview with the Packers. Believe that Whitecotton was key in developing young Jet Defensive Lineman, it will be another Jet screwup if they lose this coach IMHO, you know he was recommended by Saleh, thanks Robert

Complete forgot to add this today. Gave me a good laugh when Atlanta posted an image about the Jets defense being #1 in several categories and lots of fans reminded them of the pre and post Saleh numbers lol

Once again asleep at the wheel, hope the Jets are not, but Senior Bowl practices start next week. Senior Bowl Feb first, East West Shrine the same week

Incredible. The Jets will only be able to send Savage to the Sr. Bowl, which means that we will probably be stuck with him as Asst. GM or maybe the GM/in charge of Personnel and Scouting. I wish someone would throw Woody under a doubledecker bus literally!

Expand full comment

Excellent point! In typical Jets fashion, because Woody has screwed around so long, the Jets will undoubtedly lose the few coaches that are worth keeping. Whitecotton will probably take the Packers job, Oden, Manuel and the other good D coaches will soon follow him out the door before Woody gets around to hiring a GM and doing 2nd HC interviews.

One article on X about Ulbrich in Atlanta specifically mentioned Sherwood. Hopefully this doesn’t turn into a Demario Davis situation

Yeah I'm sure they'll try and grab a few of our players. I wouldn't be surprised if Sherwood and Reed ended up down there.

Demario, third round pick, left in free agency, signed by Cleveland, traded by Cleveland back to the Jets for one of Rex’s great draft picks, the Louisville Slugger Calvin Pryor, then Mr Coffee instead of extending Demario, brought in Avery( the bust ) Williamson, Demario went to Saints, will eventually be in the Saints HOF excellent player and inspirational leader,

I can't believe the "he'll be missed" comment is still getting any mention. I think in context it's pretty clear what he was saying. JES had been interview by the Jets, had made the 2nd round of interviews for the Titans (comment was made before they announced the hire) and had been asked to interview by the Raiders (who don't have a 50 person list like the Jets). And the entire quote is about JES being ready to be a GM. But even stripped of the context. Does anyone really think that the 1) Jets have Chosen a GM already without doing any 2nd round interviews. 2) Told that candidate at his interview that they're going with him 3) Not announced that hire in the week since then. 4) that candidate has been telling people that he's gotten the job and 5) in the week since they told the candidate that he got the job and despite that candidate telling people and public comments being made that he's gotten a job already, no reporter has gotten any word about this hire.

The way the Jets are running this hiring process is baffling to me. I don't understand how they haven't announced any 2nd round interviews yet. And It's very possible that the Jets hire JES, he's clearly qualified there's a reason he's on the shortlist for every opening (he'd be on my shortlist for a 2nd interview). But I'd be surprised if they've already decided who they were hiring and even more shocked if they told that person already and word hadn't leaked.

First of all, David, thank you for posting your column on Jon-Eric Sullivan this morning. Second, I couldn't like or get into Substack the normal way. I normally click the "Like" button and it brings me in, or I click on the "Comment" button and it brings me in. This morning when I tried clicking on those buttons, I received a message that "Something has gone terribly wrong." Finally, I was able to enter when I clicked on the "Substack" button. Others may be having difficulty as well.

You don't seem to like Dimitroff for GM. I'm curious why?

I was torn in the Commanders-Lions game. I never liked the Redskins, but I really like Kingsbury and he is who I really want as the new HC. Second, I've always felt a kinship with the Lions fans because the Lions have mostly been worse than the Jets, so for their sake, I was rooting for the Lions. I was also rooting for the Lions for Glenn's sake.

Early in the game, the Lions didn't look sharp and the Commanders really did, I started thinking that the Commanders were going to win, and they had completely won me over by the end of the game. I can't imagine their losing again this season. I think they will win the SB.

As you noted, the backlash following the game, was incredibly dumb by Jets fans. On the other Jets fan site where I post, the comments were mind numbing they were so dumb. Posters didn't think it made one bit of difference that 13 of the 17 players on IR were from the defense, including their 3-4 best defensive players, and as you noted, 75% of their DL. Glenn totally had to change their style of play on D. They also weren't giving any credit to Kingsbury, Daniels or the Commanders. They talked about the Commanders like they were an awful team and that Daniels was just a "rookie." While this is his rookie season, by this point, he is no longer a "rookie." In a very real sense, he never was mentally/emotionally. It's amazing how poised and calm he always is. He doesn't get rattled or flustered. That must be wonderful. Sadly, I can't even imagine that. I'm too passionate for my own good, but that's a big part of what makes me such a great singer and performer. Daniels would probably make a terrible musician or singer.

It's funny, he looks skinny, and doesn't look like he's very athletic. It looks like that he wouldn't be able to withstand many big hits, but he is amazing. If he can continue to stay healthy, the sky's the limit for him. I think Kingsbury deserves a world of credit of helping Daniels play at the level he has this season. I remember when the Jets scrimmaged against the Commanders and our D made Daniels not look very good. He quickly learned and overcame that!

I really like Sullivan's prospects as a GM, but I like Dimitroff better. He had some great drafts in Atlanta, and if the Jets go with yet another 1st-time HC, I think he needs to be supported with an experienced GM. I would be even happier if they fired Hymie Elhai, made Dimitroff the team President, then hired Sullivan as the GM, but I don't see that happening at all. There's no way that Woody is going to stop playing with his toy. I really think that Dimitroff should be the hire. It's not very often that an NFL franchise gets the opportunity to hire a topnotch former GM or HC. If Andy Reid was available, would/should the Jets turn him down? Dimitroff may not be quite at Reid's level, but he's not that far behind. He's certainly head and shoulders above any of the other candidates. I've had the GM candidates rated as Dimitroff, Borgonzi, Sullivan since the list came out and there was no Agnew or Cunningham on the list.

Hire Glenn immediately before everyone realizes the validity of David’s points!

Mite I add Flores would be acceptable as well. the key is who these guys would be able to bring with them. I think Agnew is staying put. Maybe there will be a surprise now that they are out.

For me, I would be happy with either Glenn or Josh McCowen as HC. And the guy from Green Bay sounds like he wud be gud as GM. However, I think I still prefer Dimitrov.

Never heard of Sullivan - at this point I don’t know who I like for GM. They moving so slow it’s bound to be the wrong guy at both positions. I must have missed Brick getting let go. How does he get hired ? Did they tell him in the interview we are not hiring you as head coach ? What about the rest of the staff were they secretly let go ? I’m totally into hockey haven’t watched one Playoff game. Sorry David I hate the redskins. Hoping Chiefs take Buffalo down again

I imagine the Jets are letting the new coach decide on his staff and as such they haven't let the coaches go yet, but some of them could have been out of contract as well. With Ulbrich I'm sure he was told as part of the process that it was very unlikely that he would be hired which made him head back to Atlanta. He spent 6 seasons there so that's probably why he got hired.

I worked the Lions game this weekend and then watched bits and piece of all the others apart from the Ravens/Bills. I really don't like 3 of the 4 teams left, but I'm working the NFC Championship game so have no choice but to watch that one.

Even if the Jets coaches are still under contract, I believe that they have to let the coach go interview if it's for a promotion. If the coach is then offered that job with another team, the Jets would be real jerks and get a bad name if they then kept the player from taking the new job if it was offered, and then turned around a few weeks later and the new coach didn't want that coach. That's why it's ludicrous that they have interviewed so many and aren't moving faster.

This search should not help the 33rd Team, Tanny or Spielman at all with regards to advising/helping other teams. IMO they have a done a lousy job interviewing too many bad/incompetent candidates who didn't deserve an interview, interviewing too many candidates as "favors" to someone, have left too many top candidates off their list (unless they did contact those individuals and were told that they weren't interested in working for the Jets and that info hasn't leaked out, and they haven't urged Woody to move faster.

It's totally incompetent and inexecusable that the Jets could lose some of their better players and coaches because this search has taken so long, and that the new HC and GM won't be in place to go to the Sr. Bowl. Woody really needs to pilloried in the media and on social media. That dumb SOB needs to be run out of NJ/NY and out of the NFL.

I started the HC search wanting an offensive mind and I still do. The problem is that there isn't a good candidate from the offensive side whom the Jets have interviewed or plan to interview. Hopefully, that will change, and they will have already reached out to Kingsbury, McCarthy, and Monken by the time I post this. Among their current candidates, Brady doesn't have enough experience imo, and the Bills offense didn't look very good versus the Ravens. It was very predictable, and Allen didn't throw the ball nearly enough. At the goal line on 3rd and 2 in the 4th Qtr. I agreed with the announcers that the Bills should have run the push play with Allen twice. They didn't. They tried a different run, got stuffed and had to settle for a FG. Mny fans on that other site rabid for McCown, they think the fact that it's an out fo the box and totally different move than the Jets have made will lead to it catching lightning in a bottle. I think it would probably be an umitigated disaster. Nagy isn't very good.

I still think the Jets need an experienced HC and they need someone who will make the offense the primary focus of the team. The NFL is an offensive league. As the games proved this weekend, a great offense is going to normally beat a great defense. One can only hold down a great offense for so long.

If Kingsbury, McCarthy, and Monken aren't contacted or have no interest in coming to the Jets, then out of the current candidates they have, sadly the two best are Glenn and Flores. Whereas I think the team would be more disciplined and win more games this season with Flores, he scares the bejeebers out of me. I would be too afraid that he would have another meltdown or sabotage a young player or QB that the GM drafted. If the Jets are leaning towards Flores, then they definitely need an experienced GM like Dimitroff to keep him in line.

From their current candidates, I'd have to go with Glenn. My big fear with him is that he won't be able to put together a quality offensive staff. I think Tanner Engstrand is not realistic. If Johnson gets the Jags or Raiders job. Engstrom will become the OC in Detroit. I did a search on the offensive coaches that Glenn has coached with. In NO he coached with a number of good offensive coaches, but they ALL went to Denver with Payton. There are only two possibilities there. John Morton, who is the Passing Game Coordinator and Rod Curry who is now the QB Coach with the Bills. Since Morton was an OC here before and fired. I would be really surprised if he had any interest in coming back to work with the Jets, especially since they probably don't have a QB, and Denver has an excellent young QB in Nix. His way is blocked in Denver by Joe Lombardi, so maybe he would be amenable to becoming Glenn's OC. Curry could possibly be a decent coordinator, but he's had no experience as an OC. Just as I think Glenn would be better positioned to do well with an experienced GM, I think he would do much better with an experienced OC and DC. So I would hope that Morton would be his choice and Morton would take the job.

The only other option is John DeFilippo, whom was the OC in Cleveland during one of the years Glenn was the DB Coach in Cleveland. De Filippo has experience as an OC, but evidently isn't very good, because the longest stint he served as an OC is only 2 years before he was fired. In his other stints, he only lasted one year. So unless, Glenn has become friends with some other OCs I think his OC needs to be John Morton. Hopefully, there is a DC that is at the same level as Morton or higher who would take the job.
