There is joy in Beantown. The church bells haven’t rang so intensely since Paul Revere spent the night alarming the colonists that the British are coming, the British are coming.

If Paul Revere was still alive, he would be announcing Vrabel is coming, Vrabel is coming!!!

Unfortunately, Krafty Craft in one of the most blatant circumventions of the Rooney Rule got his man.

Did he interview 2 minority coaches, yes, except both coaches were no longer employed by any NFL team or by the NFL itself.

Of course Goodell and his gang of white collars let Crafty off the hook, again. Spygate? Inflategate.

Evidently Crafty has pictures of Goodell in a compromising situation. Maybe Goodell goes to the same massage parlor as Crafty.

Just as Sonny told Calogero in A Bronx Tale, nobody cares, nobody cares.

Just maybe the NFL could change the hiring rules.

How about no new HC can be hired until after the conference championship games have been decided.

This gives teams more time to decide and maybe go back with a better deal for a HC hire.

It also would have more coaches available for interviews. Just a thought.

Mentioned many times on many different platforms the Jets inability to develop quarterbacks due to their coaching.

In yesterday’s Eagles Packer game, Eagle # 77 was having an excellent game at guard. His name Mekhi Becton.

The Eagles a perennial playoff team the last few years. Took a player who was a first round bust for the Jets and made him a solid player.

Again proving that coaching is pivotal for success. When Saleh brought in Keith Carter to be the offensive line coach and running game coach, his sullen reputation came with him.

He couldn’t do anything with Becton and the Jets finished as the 32nd ranked team in rushing this past season. Why is he still here.

Sean Payton, a very disliked coach but a very good quarterback coach, used a rookie quarterback to get to the playoffs.

Kliff Kingsbury, an innovative offensive coach, used a rookie quarterback to beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last night.

Do you actually think a Nate Hackett or an Arthur Smith or a Todd Downing could do the same with a rookie quarterback.

We saw Hackett with Zach last year maybe it wasn’t all Zach. Maybe it was the mediocre coaching of Hackett, Downing and Carter.

Now that his team has lost, any chance Liam Coen accepts an interview with the Jets.

Just remember Tannenbaum was a cap specialist with no scouting experience.

He made two mistakes as a GM.

Once he traded up one year to draft both Revis and Harris, he thought he had to trade up every year. Remember Steven Hill, a trade up. He basically ruined the team depth with the trade ups. Second mistake, he let Rex into the draft room, the Jets were doom.

Maybe Greenberg with Savage could solve the no scouting on Greenberg’s resume. I’m sure he is smart enough to steal a personnel guy or two from Tampa.

I would hope that the Jets have contacted Coen and the Jags about interviewing. I've seen it posited that Coen may be guaranteed the Jags job, or if Bowles retires or moves upstairs, he could be in line for the Bucs HC job.

I saw a quote from Kingsbury where he said that he was very happy in Washington and loves working with Jayden Daniels, and that it would take a lot to get him to leave. That may be just trying to up his value and get more money, it could be sincere, or it could be some of both. Even if he does consent to doing some HC interviews, I would be shocked if he agreed to an interview with the Jets. I wish he would, and wish that he would be the new HC, but sadly, just don't see it happening. He coached Caleb Williams his last year at USC, so we could see Kingsbury being hired by the Bears, but he may not want to have to compete against Detroit, Minnesota and GB.

I have zero confidence in Savage as GM or even Assistant GM in charge of Personnel and Scouting. His best four players (and about the only four good ones out of four drafts) were Joe Thomas OT, Braylon Edwards WR, D'Qwell Jackson LB, and Kamerion Wimbley DE. His last draft with the Browns, he only had two 4th round picks, two 6th round picks and a 7th. I think he had traded up the year before for Brady Quinn QB, but it may have been for Joe Thomas.

With the cast of 1000's the Jets are interviewing still don't get them not at least calling Marcus Freeman. The Bears are and thats a good move. Think the Jets are intervewing 1000's so when they fail this time they can say "well we talked to everyone dont blame us"

Marcus Freeman and Matt Campbell should have been near the top of the list. Instead we're too busy interviewing Arthur Smith and Ron Rivera 🙄

right - don't get it but thats them

I agree Steve. Stever Sarkisian of Texas and Matt Campbell should get a call as well.

Right now , I want Aaron Glenn as HC, so as backward as it is, I will take the best GM that works well with Glenn. It’s wrong and it’s backward, but that’s where I am. In this day and age , I question how much value a CAP guy brings to an organization, sorry Mike. The Patriots are trash, my hope is Karma will get them in the long run, but Vrabel makes them better.

Becton needed to be humbled, the Jets could have drafted Wirf. Becton failed at LT, failed at Right Tackle, finally he is a serviceable Guard. Jets didn’t handle the Becton debacle well, the Eagles front office, coaching staff, and veteran Offensive Lineman, made Becton into a player.

The Jets have some decent assistant Coaches, but Carter and Hackett have to be shown the door. I know you want to give the incoming administration choices, but these two guys just have to go. PLEASE

Hiring the HC before the GM might be ass backward but since Woody has owned the team, he has done everything ass backward already.

Let's just hire Mike Borgonzi and Aaron Glenn and get this show on the road.

Yet, I fear it's going to be Grigson and Arthur Smith

Expand full comment

Grigson maybe? Arthur Smith- 100% no 🤬way😡 As things sit I’m thinking either Glynn or Flores is the new HC. I have to wonder why nobody interviewed Ray Agnew who we discussed earlier and most here liked. I haven’t heard his name mentioned anywhere for any team? He and Glynn would have made sense. It it’s Glenn or Flores one has to wonder who they would bring in as their OC?

Expand full comment

Talk is that he let it be known that he wanted to stay with the Lions and continue learning under Holmes. No idea if that's true or not.

I'm still hoping that Agnew will get an interview, but it looks like he won't. If not then I want Borgonzi. If it's Grigson and Smith (or Flores), I'm definitely out as a Jets fan.

Expand full comment

I certainly hope they don't hire Smith and I hope they hire the GM first as you indicated they might.

And hear I thought English people were patient.

You know the ass backwardness that JO mentioned, that’s the dynamic duo of Grigson and Smith

Expand full comment

Yeah that's what I fear. Grigson had Luck fall into his lap but he made a lot of bad picks and that trade for Trent Richardson was a disaster. He worries me significantly but apparently the Jets like him.

Expand full comment

This is where Tannenbaum and Spielman have to throw him under the bus. Tannenbaum has to lead Woody to people who are deemed to be successful not people who have failed in the pass. This franchise is crying for a young intelligent resourceful GM

Expand full comment

Borgonzi has that in spades based on everything I've read about him. Would love to have him in the building. My preference is for the Jets to hire a GM and have the HC's whittled down to two by the end of the week. That way the new GM can sit in on the second interviews and make sure there is alignment in vision and culture. But...that makes too much sense.

Expand full comment

I'm totally on board with Borgonzi, but if he's the GM I want to see whom he might want to interview that Tanny and Spielman haven't suggested. It could be that hiring Borgonzi, might influence a good candidate who would say no to Woody or Tanny, to say yes. Besides, I'd rather have Brady I think than Glenn.

Expand full comment

I don't think you need to worry about Hackett, Downing, or Carter being retained.

Of all the candidates that the Jets have interviewed and lined up to interview for HC, My preference is now Joe Brady with Glenn being the 2nd choice, and Matt Nagy former Bears HC being the 3rd choice. If Coen, Monken, Campbell, and/or Sarkisian are interviewed, then my list would change. I really want the GM to be hired and to see if he has any candidates with whom Tanny and Spielman haven't. He should be the one who makes the decision on the HC, and not vice-versa. I'm totally against that. Neither Glenn, nor Vrabel or any other HC candidate that's available has earned or deserves the right to name his own GM or have a strong say in whom his GM should be.

Becton did need to be humbled, but I'm glad to see him playing well and healthy.

David, I'm curious. You're not the first person I've seen on Jets fan sites say that they think the Rooney rule does more harm than good. Why do you think that it does more harm? If not for that some teams might not be considering minority hires at all. Thanks in advance for your response on this.

As far as Greenberg for GM, I could get on board with his hiring in one of several ways. One, if he was hired as VP of Football Operations. Since he has so much experience in the financial side of the football operation of the Bucs, it would be natural for him to hold this position with the Jets. As part of his responsiiblities, he could still be the cap guy and the one to negotiate contracts. Then a GM could be hired that would focus soley on scouting (both pro and college) and monitoring the development of young players and the coaching staff, and ensure that the play met the standards the team (be it Greenberg, the GM or both) set forth.

Two, if he was hired as the GM, and someone like Nagy was hired as the Assistant GM who was in charge of personnel and scouting, or three, there was no GM per se, but two assistant GMs one in charge of the cap and finances and the other in charge of personnel, although this last idea would take two individuals who were in sync. There needs to be a boss.

Ideally, I'd like to see Spielman hired as VP of Football Operations, Greenberg hired as the Cap and Financials guy, and Agnew, Borgonzi, or Dimitroff being the Personnel guy. The problems with this are that I'm not certain that Agnew will even be interviewed, and I'm not certain that any of those three would be happy not being "the boss" and having to report to Spielman.

I truly don't understand why Woody is wasting his time interviewing the likes of Vance Joseph and Arthur Smith. I guess that he needs to feel important. Either that, or Tanny and Spielman are getting paid per interview as someone on another Jets fan site suggested.

I truly hope that Connor Hughes is correct and that Rex is not a serious candidate or is out completely. Hopefully, that was just a favor by Tanny for Rex.

Regarding the Rooney Rule and people saying that it "does more harm than good,"

I think they're exaggerating and confusing the point of the rule with the impact of the rule. They're exaggerating how bad the rule is because it isn't a perfect mechanism for promoting non-traditional hires and opening the doors of the exclusive club that is professional football coaching. It's true that the rule could work better, but there are a number of Rooney Rule-adjacent incentive programs that help juice an influx of coaches who aren't uber-privileged old white dudes. The compensatory pick incentives are a good example of that. The Rooney Rule is just one more of these mechanisms.

The other part is that they're confusing the point of the rule. It's designed to open the door to a diverse group of candidates and forces teams to, at the very least, interview (if not fully consider) somebody different. I think it's also possible that some folks get carried away with worrying about their particular team and their preferred candidate that they wind up feeling like the rule is some kind of hindrance to an expeditious hiring of said preferred candidate. The rule is meant to diversify the coaching pool of the whole league, not help the Patriots hire Mike Vrabel really quickly.

That is, at least, why I imagine folks get bent out of shape about the Rooney Rule.

Regarding interviewing guys like Vance Joseph and Arthur Smith: I think those interviews are more the data collection process of 33rd Team and how they're consulting. They, I think, are gathering as much information as possible, so that when a GM is hired, they'll be able to hit the ground running with immaculate information. That is, at least, what it looks like they're doing. I'd also, honestly, be open to a fella like Smith or Joseph. They've already failed in their first experience as a head coach. They've been brough down low, forced to reconsider what they did wrong and right, and toiled on staffs with varying degrees of success. That checks off a couple of prerequisites that I'd have in looking for a head coach (experience as the head guy, before, and a humbling experience to bring him down to earth).

Vance Joseph was fired by the Broncos after the 2018 season and was immediately hired to be Kliff Kingsbury's defensive coordinator in Arizona. He spent a couple of years on that young staff (with varying degrees of success) before heading back to the Broncos to head the D of Sean Payton's staff. Since coming back, he's built a stellar defense and learned under a very good head coach (and made the offensive contacts with Kingsbury-adjacent guys and Payton-adjacent guys along the way). He's very much an interesting name, although his expertise is the side of the ball that you're not thrilled to consider.

Smith is similar in that he failed in his first stint as a head coach (checking the box of experience and a humbling situation in his first try as a head coach), but the whole time in Atlanta wasn't a failure. He did a few things well, even though I guarantee you that he learned a bunch from how much his teams struggled (7-10 each of his three years). He has had the opportunity to spend a year as the offensive coordinator on an exemplar staff in an outstanding organization, and has largely succeeded installing an offense in a brand new environment, using two quarterbacks to do so (neither of whom were familiar with the offense). There is a lot to like about that. He isn't as enticing to a fan base as the big name (Ben Johnson, Todd Monken, Liam Cohen, etc), but he could very well have Dan Quinn/Washington-level success.

Just a few thoughts!

#Titans list of GM candidates that made it to the 2nd round:

Bills Dir. Player Personnel Terrance Gray

Bears Asst GM Ian Cunningham

Buccaneers Asst GM John Skytek

Chiefs Asst GM Mike Borgonzi

Colts Asst GM Ed Dodds

Packers VP of Player Personnel Jon-Eric Sullivan

David and others, Ian Cunningham of the Bears is interviewing for GM jobs. He has a 2nd interview upcoming with the Titans, as does Borgonzi. While Woody is screwing around inteviewing HC candidates like Arthur Smith, Cunningham or Borgonzi could be getting hired elsewhere.

Don't be surprised if the Jets wind up with Grigson as GM and that loser HC from Maryland winds up as the HC.

I'm hearing that Mike McCarthy is becoming available. Any interest in his becoming the HC. He wanted to come here in 2019 to coach Sam, but turned Woody off because Woody felt like McCarthy was interviewing him (which he probably was). McCarthy has had 12 wins 3 of the last 4 years. His career W-L record is around Harbaugh's and Tomlin's. He probably will never get the Jets to the SB, but he can make them a solid, respectable, successful team that challenges for the playoffs every year. He can fix the offense. I'm not sure that he'd want to work with Woody or come here with no young QB to groom, but if he would would any of you want him to get the job? I would, and would hope that Borgonzi or Dimitroff would as well.
