Good morning! ☕🥃🍷🍺
Sometimes I’m lost for words, it doesn’t happen often, but this morning I’m struggling to comprehend what we’re seeing.
Robert Saleh promised personnel changes. Robert Saleh said that the vibes were phenomenal this week. Robert Saleh said this offence was “close”
The Jets delivered one of the most embarrassing performances in recent memory in Orchard Part against the Bills.
Now bigger changes need to happen. It’s no longer acceptable for a coach to serve up platitudes. Robert Saleh is in the firing line, and he now has a handful of games to save his job.
🟢 The Jets now have a 26-37 record against the Buffalo Bills on the road and a 58-68 record overall.
⚪ The Jets ended their TD drought at 40 consecutive drives and 12 quarters when Breece Hall got into the end zone.
🟢 Morestead’s 18-yard pass was his first career completion, and it was probably the best pass of the night.
⚪ That unsurprisingly was Brandin Echols's first career reception as well.
🟢 The Jets are the only team who have successfully completed two fake punts this season. So there is that.
⚪ Over the last three games, Tyler Conklin has been targeted 15 times and he’s caught all 15 passes. That’s the longest streak of perfection from a Jets TE since 1997.
🟢 Since Josh Allen came into the league nobody has sacked him more than Quinnen Williams.
⚪ The Jets’ defence extended their streak to 28 games of not allowing a 300-yard passer, that’s the second-longest streak in the NFL.
🟢 Will McDonald also recorded his first career tackle for a loss.
⚪ Israel Abanikanda made his first debut, but unfortunately, he wasn’t used until the game was already out of hand.
🟢 Chris Glaser and Carter Warren also made their NFL debuts and Jake Hanson made his Jets debut.
⚪ Michael Clemons and Dion Dawkins got into a little scuffle during the game and that carried over to the tunnel after the game. Dawkins was asked about it and he had this to say after: "I'm a humble guy. I'm not a fan, man. I'm not a fan of the Jets. Very disrespectful players. It's what it is and when we could run and pass and beat a team like that - cool. Thumbs up."
🟢 The injury that forced Mekhi Becton out of the game was an ankle, looked as though it got rolled up on. Saleh couldn’t elaborate on the severity, he’ll get checked out today.
⚪ Robert Saleh was asked about Zach Wilson not completing a pass to a wide receiver before getting benched late in the 3rd quarter: “I don’t have an answer for that. Obviously, we’ll go back and watch all the tape, but none of it, like I said, whether it’s separation, being more decisive, protecting, like I said, none of it was good enough.”
🟢 Zach Wilson was asked about his feelings on getting benched “Yeah, frustrated, but I get it. Have to score, have to be in games. When it’s consecutive games of just doing nothing on offence, you know you can sit here and say last week we moved the ball, but we’re not scoring. It essentially comes down to you have to score points. So, when things aren’t getting done, change has to be made, and I understand that.”
➡️ I joked that I was ready to copy and paste the article from last week…but unfortunately that’s impossible as the Jets got even worse.
155 total yards, 6 points, 0/11 on third down and then you have the Gipson fumble to start the game, the Garrett Wilson fumble, the interceptions by the QBs, and the personal foul penalties on Sauce Gardner and Clemons.
The Jets were ineffective, unprepared and ill-disciplined.
The dam has been filling for this defence and finally, the walls came crashing down. I’m not going to excuse everything that happened with the defence today, but when you have to play mistake-free due to your offence being MIA, eventually it’s going to get
I’m not sure which moment summed up the Jets more last night, this one
Or this one
If Robert Saleh doesn’t make some serious changes he’ll be looking for a new job this off-season. It’s not all Zach’s fault, far from it, but he needs to be benched for the Miami game. You simply can’t keep running a guy out there who’s obviously not ready and expect different results.
"Like I told Zach on the sideline, it's not just him," Saleh said. "It's easy to point the finger at the quarterback, but it's pretty easy to see. You've got missed protections, you've got dropped balls, you've got missed routes. Now, obviously, he has to get better. There are things he could've done a lot better, but it's everyone right now."
I agree with the coach, but this offence needs a shot in the arm if it has any hope of competing and right now you need to make several changes, the first one being the QB. It may be it doesn’t do a thing, but the Jets have been running at a historically bad pace over the last 4 games, I think we’re now averaging 8 points over the last three.
The Jets have 9 offensive touchdowns in 10 games. That is incredibly bad, it makes the Adam Gase offence look high-octane.
Breece Hall had 23 yards on 10 carries because the Bills just loaded the box, they knew the Jets couldn’t pass the football so they sold out to stop the run. That’s the blueprint and until the Jets move the ball through the air consistently, teams are going to keep to that plan.
I appreciate that there are a lot of issues but I watched the Giants game yesterday and their patchwork line was significantly worse than the Jets, they allowed 9 sacks. Yet UDFA Tommy DeVito who wasn’t trusted to throw a pass against the Jets completed 18/26 for 246 and 3 touchdowns.
Zach completed 7 passes in nearly 3 quarters.
The offensive line is a mess and Nathaniel Hackett couldn’t call his way out of a phone booth. But Zach Wilson is not the answer, I’m not sure how much evidence we need. I can’t imagine a single other organisation in this league sticking with a guy for so long who’s been consistently so poor.
If I were Saleh, I’d be having a word in Nathaniel Hackett’s ear today to try and convince him to give up play-calling duties, giving him the opportunity to make that decision rather than make it for him. If he doesn’t then you need to make it for him. Yes, it may annoy Aaron Rodgers, but this franchise can’t be held hostage by Rodgers and his mates. Rodgers can’t look at this offensive output and say that no changes need to be made.
Nathaniel Hackett’s system works for Rodgers, but it can’t work for Zach because he can’t process at NFL speed. Tim Boyle doesn’t have the arm talent or mobility that Zach does, but he does process, and so does Siemian. With a banged-up offensive line, you need quick processing and that’s something that Zach can’t bring to the table. I feel for the guy, nobody wants to underperform, but that’s the reality of professional sports. If you don’t produce you get benched.
The Jets finally scored a touchdown, but all it took was a fake punt, another 4th down completion and a personal foul call on the Bills.
It’s simply not sustainable.
I’m at a loss to find the answers, but then I don’t get paid millions to find answers to questions like this.
Personally, I would make sweeping changes, despite it being a short week. I’d start Siemian, give Downing the playcalling, get Abanikanda involved early and often and run with the likes of Brownlee.
I’m often asked what making a QB change will do if we have problems across the board. My answer is simple, it can’t get any worse so why would you not try a QB whose skillset suits the current situation (see processing, offensive line). If you want to keep running Zach out there then that’s on you, because right now that’s hurting the Jets and it’s hurting Zach. He was deemed unready for NFL action at the start of the year and he’s proving it. Joe Douglas has to take the blame for not having a suitable option behind Zach. But, something has to change.
What do I expect to happen? Saleh will stick with Zach and state the short week as the reason and it being a teamwide issue, we’ll get blown out by the Dolphins and then I’ll meet you back here on Monday for the same discussion.
As long as Rodgers is under contract, this is team will be under his specter, so it makes no sense to talk about changing the play caller or any of the former Lambeau Leapers currently on this roster. The Jets organization lead by the Clueless Johnson Brothers is scared to offend Rodgers.
Aside from players who don’t have Green Bay on their resumes, all current Jet employees jobs are secured. Again the Rodgers spell freezes all personnel decisions. JD and Saleh safe for now.
Saleh talks too much. His chalkboard comment about embarrassing quarterbacks came back to bite his pride and joy defense in the ass big time. His constant weekly comments about the offense proves he knows just about as much about offense as Rex did. Which means he knows nothing.
The Raiders in much array, changes their OC among other changes and with an OC with one game experience beats the Jets.
Buffalo next on the Jet schedule, changes their OC, they tattoo Saleh’s D for 32.
The Jet offense setting negative offensive records are staying put with Hackett. But like Saleh said, the offense needed a little tweak then they would be fun to watch. If Saleh thinks his offense is so much fun to watch, I’m sure he will watching the Bill’s tape with a large bucket of pop corn, a 72 ounce big gulp coke and a box of goobers Monday morning, chuckling it up with Hackett.
I don’t know how long Saleh will be HC here, but whenever a change is being made, the Jets better hire a young, innovative offensive coach to be HC. This organization and it’s fan base are begging for a coach/ coaching staff who can provide a modern day offense that keeps opposing DCs up all night. Hackett’s offense doesn’t scare anyone.
The Jet organization and most Jet fans like to talk about the 2022 draft, how many of those players do you think will really want to sign a second contract here after playing through two seasons with this dysfunctional organization.
Hackett is not as bad as Payton said he was. Payton was being charitable, he is worst.
Smart organizations admit they are wrong when bad personnel decisions are made. The salary cap makes some cut’s financially impossible but this nonsense about Zach Wilson is getting better has to stop.
As much as Rodgers injury destroyed the 2023 Jets NFL season, having Zach as the backup guaranteed this would be one of the worst seasons in Jet history.
Zach is not a starting NFL quarterback, he is maybe a mediocre backup at best.
It’s not Zach’s fault he was drafted but it is the Jet organization’s fault he is the backup.
It’s time to say “ Hasta La Vista”
I'm surprised you were able to do a newsletter this morning. Would have been too depressed to do one, although I know you get paid for these.
So many things wrong with this O, it's even dragging Breece, Garrett and the D down with them. Was LaFleur that bad? Nope, compared to Hackett.
It's no-one's fault individually, it started at the top with JD failing to restock the OL/bring in a decent backup QB, goes on to Saleh babbling about the O nearly being there despite 8 TDs in 9 games....against a team that fired its OC last week.
Dysfunctional....and I'm being charitable.
Will things change? Doubt it, we were meant to be all in this season and next. Who is gonna want to come to Florham Park as a FA?
13 years of no playoffs and counting...man, I miss Rex Ryan's 09 and 10 teams.
