DEBACLE
Edition #1017: The Jets are in absolute disarray as Glenn continues his sloth like actions.
Good morning ☕
I had this piece all ready to go yesterday afternoon, and feeling proud of myself for working ahead I largely switched off for the evening.
Then came the news that Aaron Glenn had fired Tanner Engstrand, the same day that Brian Daboll was being confirmed as Robert Saleh’s OC in Tennessee.
Everyone is taking the fall for the Jets 4 win season…apart from Aaron Glenn. I’m not sure what they expected Tanner Engstrand to do with Justin Fields, Tyrod Taylor, Brady Cook and Garrett Wilson out for half a season, but apparently they didn’t meet their expectations.
Last week it was reported that Tanner may be facing a demotion, now he’s out of a job full stop as Aaron Glenn fires both coordinators. Hue Jackson did that with the Browns after they went 1-15 in 2016, they went 0-17 in 2017.
According to reports late last night the Jets reached out to Jon Gruden to join Glenn’s coaching staff and he said no. Of course he did, why would he tie himself to a sinking ship.
Here’s the issue for the Jets right now. Nobody will want to join this mess.
If you look at the fact that the Jets are starting from scratch with their coaching team and have a lot of holes to fill, the likely outcome is a 1-3 win season in 2026 and Aaron Glenn getting fired. Then a new coach comes in and brings his own people and you’re out of a job.
The Jets finished their season over 3 weeks ago, and Glenn is only now getting around to firing his OC. Just a point, 8 other teams have already hired offensive coordinators in this cycle and there are 10 others teams still searching. So if they’re lucky they’ll get the 15th or so best candidate this cycle.
We are hurtling towards a situation where Glenn is calling plays on defense, Chris Harris is the DC and Frank Reich is the OC. That would be an unmitigated disaster, unless the Jets are intentionally tanking from January to put themselves in a position to draft Arch Manning or Julian Sayin or whoever is the #1 QB prospect in the 2027 draft.
According to Zack Rosenblatt, coaches believed Glenn changed his mind on his off-season plans: “At some point in the last week or so, multiple sources said they felt Glenn changed course on his original plan for the offseason. At the end of the week, various position coaches were fired — and at least a few of them were surprised at that happening.”
It’s also believed that Glenn has changed his approach to the DC search too, moving from a veteran presence to calling plays himself.
In short…Glenn is making this all up as he goes along and he’s quickly turning the Jets from the most embarrassing operation in North American Sports to the most embarrassing organisation in elite world sport.
On a day when arguably the best OC candidate came off the market in Brian Daboll and Jim Leonhard became the leading candidate to take over the defensive side of the ball in Buffalo, Glenn decided to add more woe onto the shoulders of long-suffering Jets fans.
I’ve backed Glenn for too long, the season raised the warning signs and the off-season has shown that his grand plan is to not have a plan. He asked fans for patience, something he hasn’t shown any of the staff members who were hand-picked by him.
Sack Glenn now. If we’re blowing this up and we are blowing this up. Let’s not waste another year with Glenn. I would rather Woody call Jim Leonhard and offer him the HC role than sit through more absolute nonsense from Glenn.
Woody needs to act…but you get the sense that Glenn is a Woody apologist who will do his owners bidding without question, so get that seatbelt ready because this is going to be a tough season…I think January 28th is the earliest I’ve ever written off the team.
NEWS & NOTES
Robert Saleh is learning from the mistakes of his past as it was revealed yesterday that he was hiring Brian Daboll as his OC. That’s an excellent hire for both Robert Saleh and Cam Ward.
The Bills are staying in house for their HC hire, promoting OC Joe Brady to the main role. Josh Allen and Joe Brady are close and Allen was sitting in on all the HC interviews, this isn’t overly surprising.
Daniel Jeremiah had his first mock draft out this week:
#2 - Arvell Reese - “The Jets have needs all over their defense. Reese is versatile and athletic. I think he’ll benefit from working off the edge full time after also playing off-ball linebacker during his Buckeyes career.”
#16 - Carnell Tate - “This would be a value pick, but we see talented receivers go in this area of the draft year after year (Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Emeka Egbuka, Justin Jefferson). The Jets pair former Ohio State star Garrett Wilson with a fellow Buckeye.”
This concerning report came from Connor Hughes yesterday: “There is a growing belief among league circles that Chris Harris (DC) and Glenn (calling the plays) is a direction the Jets are warming up to.”
Daniel Jeremiah also had his top 50 prospect ranking out and here are some highlights on that:
He had Fernando Mendoza as his #1 prospect, but it was RB Jeremiyah Love who took the #2 spot.
Arvell Reese was the #1 defensive prospect on his board and the #3 prospect overall.
Makai Lemon was his #1 receiver on the board and #7 overall prospect.
Four different receivers were included in his top 20 prospects.
Is Bryan Cook worth targeting in free agency?
If you’ve been with me from the start you’ll know that I love safeties. Last year I was banging the table for the Jets to sign Cam Bynum, but they went with the cheap option in Andre Cisco.
Cisco played 8 games, had 0 INT, 0 Sacks, 41 tackles and 1 tackle for a loss. Bynum played in all 17 games, had 4 interceptions, 1 sack, 1 tackle for a loss and 81 total tackles, 8 pass defenses and allowed just one touchdown all season.
Different teams, different systems, different players but the principle remains the same. Sometimes in life you get what you pay for.
This year safety play has taken off. Antonio Johnson in Jacksonville, Kyle Hamilton in Baltimore, Julian Love in Seattle, Jalen Pitre in Houston and Bryan Cook in Kansas City. According to PFF, those were the best five safeties in the league.
Of all of those players only one of them is about to become a free agent, and that man is Bryan Cook. A player who finished 2025 in remarkable good form, unlike most of his teammates who wilted once the playoffs vanished.
“I know at the end of the day, the locker room is gonna change. It does every year. But now, I’m one of the guys that might be changing,” Cook told The Athletic. “However, whether that be the case or not, I have an opportunity to play with these guys in this last game. As far as the season, I just try to enjoy each moment.”
Cook ended the season having appeared in all 17 games for the second year in a row. He had 85 tackles, 6 pass defenses but failed to record an interception, although he did have 3 in 2024 and had 2 his final year in college, so he has it in his bag.
He lined up all over the field for Kansas and although he’s not quite the utility man that Kyle Hamilton is, being able to line up deep, in the box and in the slot will be a major point in his favour when it comes to contract negotiations.
As will the fact he allowed just 182 yards in his coverage and 60 yards after the catch all season.
Of the 75 safeties who appeared in at least 500 snaps last season, here’s how Bryan Cook ranked:
PFF total defense rating: 5th
PFF run defense ranking: 13th
PFF tackling ranking: 5th
PFF coverage ranking: 4th
Yards Allowed: 10th best
Yards per reception allowed: 11th best
YAC allowed: 5th best
PBU’s generated: 5th best
He was also called for just a single penalty.
When you add everything up and consider he’s just 26 and set to hit the best years of his career and he’s spent the last four years working under Steve Spagnuolo in Kansas who’s widely considered to be one of the best defensive coaches in football, you can understand why he’d be of interest to the Jets.
“I understand the ins and outs of things — more polished being out there for some years now,” Cook said. “I’ve had my own battles, obstacles that I overcame as well. Just more time and getting better with time.”
Spagnuolo said that Cook runs the show in the secondary and at 6’1 and pushing 210lbs, he’s a big unit who’s not afraid to hit.
Leadership is something that I’m pretty keen on this off-season. It’s why I wrote about Alex Anzalone yesterday and it’s part of why I’m writing about Cook.
As someone who is fast (reached 21mph on a fumble return), big, physical and a + communicator who plays disciplined football…he sure sounds like an Aaron Glenn type guy.
The Jets drafted Malachi Moore, but outside of Moore the cupboard is pretty empty. The issue is, the rest of the league will see exactly what we see.
For some people that may be a little rich. But that average annual salary would put him outside the top 10 in terms of safeties, and if you can get a top-5 safety on a top-10 contract then you’re doing something right.

At 2:17 pm yesterday afternoon David opened a link to announce that Tanner Engstrand was no longer the Jet OC.
Evidently he decided to walk then accept a demotion.
The reaction from the Torch and Pitchfork Brigade was fast and furious. Never before has a Jet related post brought such vitriol and harshness.
As Paul Revere whose ride alerted the countryside, David’s announcement immediately brought out the Brigade in full force.

Evidently Ron Alexander was busy shoveling the 27 inches of snow he got Sunday. I’m sure he would have contributed a few choice thoughts.
It’s not the fact that Engstrand walked away, but the timing.
But what do we know. Glenn has not been shy to tell the press, “ I know what I’m doing.
Aaron, you could have fooled me.
Meanwhile as the media and fans are erupting like Mt Vesuvius, somewhere in his little corner of the world there is a man sitting in his lounge chair, having a brandy, smoking a Cuban cigar. He has a smile on his face longer and brighter than the Cheshire Cat.
He feels that the shackles have been taking off of him.
Those shackles being, the label, “ Worst Coach in Jet History
Rich Kotite has waited since 1996 to shed that dubious distinction. Today he is a free man. He has been exonerated. His shackles are off.
It is very doubtful that anyone will argue with you if you say that Glenn is “ the Worst Head Coach
In Jet History. If they disagree, they prove they no anything about NFL football.
It was exactly one year on January 27, that the new Jet Coach was introduced to the media and fans
His words that day
"Put your seatbelts on and get ready for the ride," he said, talking directly to his new players. "We are the freaking New York Jets, and we're built for this s---."
Did you ever see words ring so hollow.
Another phony using automotive terms to describe his coaching philosophy.
We as fans just didn’t learn our lesson did we.
As Glenn is getting excoriated, the real villain of this depressing day is silent, probably in hiding. His name Woody Johnson
He had no problem sending out season ticket renewals for 2026 in October of 2025 when his team was 0-7. He had no problem throwing Justin Fields under the bus. He also was too embarrassed to show for the last three games of the season.
But his silence in what is turning his team into one of the biggest NFL off season clusterf**ks of all time.
Saleh as bad as he was, was never this bad. Even Gase won seven games his first year.
Writers say that Woody doesn’t like to fire people who have years left on their contracts.
So maybe Woody should hire someone one who actually knows what they are doing.
Woody spent over $660 million of his grandfathers money to buy the Jets. He never earned a penny of it.
Right now estimates depending on where you go say the Jets are worth anywhere from 8.1 billion up to 9.1 billion.
That’s a real nice return on grandpas money.
Woody you can afford to fire Glenn. We didn’t ask for him but you gave him $60 million over 5 years. He is YOUR HIRE. You have been fleeced. Take the minimal hit and do the right thing, hire a coach who has a clue.
Other wise you won’t be able to handle the shit storm that you personally are going to get hit with for the coming off season and season.
You are not saving grandpa’s money by keeping Glenn.
Woody, it is amazing, this team just gets worse every year no matter who the coach is.
It’s time Woody for to look in the mirror and truly admit that you know you are the problem.
Sell the dam team, you are clueless
UNFOUNDED RUMORS
RICK Spielman advised Woody to fire Glenn as soon as the season was over
It appears that a majority of Jet players in their exit interviews said the big issue wasn’t the coaches but the lack of talent.
Phil Savage, ex Brown GM was responsible for selecting the players for the Senior Bowl.
JD lured him away to be a consultant for the Jets scouting department.
It would appear that Glenn decided to go a different Avenue.
Phil Savage, who was decked out in Rams gear, here at the Senior Bowl.
So safe to say he is no longer consulting for the Jets.
Then again, Glenn has no problem telling the world “ I Know What I’m Doing”
Well they finally didn’t win the off season !
The only way to mitigate what’s going on is to FIRE Glenn today. It’s not even amazing that Glenn is going unchecked with the decisions. Mougey, the owner no one saying a word.
Ive said it before - I hate being a Jets fan I hate it.
