☀️ Good Morning ☕
A lot can happen in the NFL in 24 hours. With the initial process seeming to drag on, the Jets are starting the 2nd interview process and it could be over by the time I sit down to write tomorrow’s piece later today.
It was announced yesterday that Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn and Washington Commanders assistant GM Lance Newmark will both be meeting with the Jets today for second interviews, which I don’t think is a coincidence.
With Aaron Glenn set to meet the New Orleans Saints on Wednesday, the Jets need to be proactive today in not letting him leave the building without a deal on the table, if they see him as their priority choice for the Head Coaching role.
Lance Newmark is an interesting and good choice for GM if the Jets decide to go in that direction. He already has an existing relationship with Aaron Glenn from their time in Detroit and according to Adam Schefter he has a really good relationship with Glenn and both helped turned Detroit from bottom dwellers to #1 seed in the NFC
I haven’t covered Lance in great detail, I was getting to him but the Jets made my job extremely difficult by interviewing every executive in the NFL. If he’s hired which I expect him to be then I’ll get to a detailed piece out later this week, but here are the cliff notes on a good career thus far.
Currently the Washington Commanders assistant GM who oversees both personnel and scouting departments.
Before joining Washington he was with Detroit for 26 years. So he has unique experience of being somewhere and witnessing first hand what should and shouldn’t be done to build a successful franchise.
Was the senior director of player personnel for Detroit with oversight on both the college and pro scouting operations. He also oversaw the Lions football information and football technology department, which is pretty unique.
Director of player personnel for five seasons (2016-21)
Director of college scouting (2015-16)
Assistant director of college scouting (2008-14)
National scout (2005-07)
Area scout (1999-2004)
Before moving to Detroit he worked with Hall of Fame General Manager Bobby Beathard in San Diego with the Chargers
Newmark to me would be a strong choice and while he wasn’t at the top of my list, there is a lot to like about his pairing with Glenn when you consider their overlap in Detroit and their strong relationship. Then combine that with the fact he’s had to work his way up from a road scout to where he is today, experience on both the college and pro sides, experience working with a legendary GM in Beathard, an established GM in Holmes and the #1 GM candidate in last years cycle Adam Peters and you get a very well-rounded and respected candidate. He also helped Washington and Peters with roster construction (which would include salary cap ramifications), a team who won 4 games last year and going to compete for an NFC Championship this weekend.
Washington witnessed a great turnaround this year and that is relatable experience for what needs to happen with the Jets. The Commanders infused a young roster with talented veteran experience like Bobby Wagner (132 tackles, 10 TFL), Austin Ekeler (700+ scrimmage yards, 4 TDs), Zach Ertz (600+ yards, 7 TDs), Dante Fowler Jr (10 sacks), Frankie Luvu (8 sacks, 99 tackles, 12 TFL), Tyler Biadasz (1 sack allowed), Jeremy Chinn (2 INT). Coming over after being director of player personnel you can guarantee he played a key part in these signings alongside Adam Peters and Washington him on pretty much the lot, as well as Daniels in the draft.
Who knows if they’ll find success in New York, but I’d be pretty excited about the combination of Lance Newmark and Aaron Glenn. Let’s get it done.
🟢 I missed this off yesterday’s newsletter but over the weekend former Jets interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich was named the Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator. Jeff Ulbrich was put in a really difficult situation with the Jets but he certainly didn’t help himself and he goes back to a Falcons team where he spent 6 seasons in a variety of roles. Wish nothing but the best for Jeff, but I’m glad the Jets have moved on. Now to get the new HC signed so we can fire all the other coaches on this team.
🟢 Jermaine Johnson has quickly become one of my favourite Jets and getting him back next year will be like a new signing. He’s been talking to the official website - "It's been all right. It sounds like you should enjoy the great weather, palm trees, the beach, and obviously I live good. But my D-line coach texted me in Week 6 or 7 and asked how life was treating me out here. And I was like, honestly, I'm not meant to be sitting here with my feet kicked up. I belong going to war with you guys. That's where I belong. It doesn't' feel right. I miss putting my body on the line for a greater cause. I said if I could go out there and not record a single stat but help you guys win, I would do that."
🟢 PFF believe the best fit for the Jets at HC will be Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo - “Spagnuolo obviously knows what it takes to win from his stints as defensive coordinator with the Giants and Chiefs. His previous head-coaching gig with the Rams gave him very little chance for success due to the team's roster The Jets have enough top-end talent with which to win, and Spagnuolo could look toward his connections — someone like Eric Bienemy, Matt Nagy or Mike Kafka — to fill the offensive coordinator position. The future at quarterback remains the biggest question with regard to personnel, but the Jets should not be as bad as they are with their current collection of talent.”
🟢 Robert Saleh is getting a 2nd interview with the Jacksonville Jaguars and that will take place on Friday. Saleh coached with the Jaguars between 2014-16 and apparently his first interview went very well. Liam Coen is also a candidate for that role and he’s also getting a second interview, Coen is a guy I loved for the Jets but they never requested an interview for one reason or another.
We spoke about safety a little bit last week in relation to Xavier Watts at Notre Dame and Talanoa Hufanga who’s set to be a free agent with the San Francisco 49ers.
I’m now starting to put together lists for free agency and the draft, and with the Jets hopefully hiring their new GM and HC soon, we should be able to turn the page to free agency sooner rather than later. But today I’m getting a head start by looking at Minnesota Vikings soon to be free agent safety Camryn Bynum.
