Thank you for this interesting look at the combine. As fans we tend to focus on guys that play positions of need. This article helps understand why the drills are helpful in the evaluations.
Since we (writers and fans) have no clue what the Jet’s present evaluations are on Becton and Herbig, what are the odds of the Jets starting the season with Becton and AVT at tackle and Tomlinson and a resigned Herbig at guard with a second round drafted center. They would still have Mitchell as the third tackle.
If that possibility exists than it would give the Jets the option to draft another wide receiver or a linebacker or safety. I could see a wr more prominent, adding more weapons to whoever will be the starting quarterback.
Or Douglas could do a reversal from past drafts and trade down, there appears excellent tackle options with early second round grades.
Good shout Bobber and I think there's definitely a possibility the Jets could go that way, adding another top tier receiver is a pretty attractive proposition.
I'm just not sure the Jets would head into the season relying on Becton after two years on the sideline, when you pair that with Max's health issues, there is a huge question over the tackles.
One thing we do know is that JD doesn't reach. So if there are no tackles at #13 that he deems top 15 worthy, I could see him either taking BPA or trading down if he doesn't see the value.
It’s February and the overwhelming consensus is that the Jets will draft an Offensive Tackle at 13, or maybe not. Paris Johnson will not be there at 13, question Skronski’s upside with those TRex arms, Broderick Jones is as green as they come, and although everyone will love Dawand’s wingspan, you may not love his feet, he maybe a difficult fit . All players have worts. The 13th pick is a nice spot, you can get good value if you are flexible. Impossible to tell who will be available, but there should be a couple of outstanding Edge Players, and some very nice CB’s available. Edge & CB are strong areas for the Jets, trading down is an appealing option, and the Jets will have trading partners for an Edge, or a particular flavor of CB.
Kudos to David and his list of 22 OT’s with their excellent draft projections, pretty dang accurate. Like the second round Tackles, and it’s not completely crazy that one of Jones boys could drop.
So the play in February is to Trade down 2-5 spots from 13 and draft a Center. Picking up a third round pick and change. Drafting an OT in the second round. We will see.
JO, I’m getting blip and blurbs supposedly from Jets HQ’s that hint the Jets may “not go OT early”? So maybe you’re on to something. The fact Max Mitchell played as well as he did as a 4th round pick advertised as a project makes me wonder.
Especially if the Jets wind up with an extra pick, the Jets could double dip at OT. A fourth round versatile OT would be a JD classic move.
If you’re Cutting Corey Davis and/ or Berrios, a WR makes sense in the First, but there isn’t a WR that rocks my world. Fans would storm the Castle, but you’re cutting Lawson, Saleh has a plan, and the best value at 13 could be at Edge. Kindly note some interesting Edge Rushers in the 5Th & sixth round. We haven’t gone through FA yet
Very good article. Maybe I should not assume but do JD and the Jets staff use this kind of insight? I am hoping that the Jets get Carr then in the draft trade down a little to get more picks maybe a late 2nd/early3rd plus another 5th rounder. Based on your criteria in the article do you have scorecard that we could use to eyeball all these OTs? I bet that would be valuable information - sell it. :)
Hey Jujo. I think they absolutely use these kinds of insights and they’ll probably have significantly more. As a follow up to this article I’m going to put the performances from the combine together next week and rank them based on what we outlined today. Hopefully that will be useful come draft time.
