When the Jets signed Jacob Martin, saw it as a value signing, but also as a replacement for Bryce Huff. The poor run defense was one thing, but back injuries are tricky and can be very debilitating in both the short and long term. It’s a training camp battle, primarily to see if the back holds up. Bryce is a guy with upside, in 2023 Lawson is out of Guaranteed Money. If Carl coming back from an Achilles, has 6 sacks, reasonable pressures and is decent against the run, do you keep him at 15 million ? Not sure. If you can keep Bryce on the roster you do, your betting on his upside, but also as a hedge of Lawson being cut in 2023.

…so the harder question is who comes off when you put him back on??

You were correct in not including him in your initial 53. Jacob Martin takes his slot. Martin is better against the run and pretty much the same player rushing the QB.

It depends on how many Dlinemen we take I suppose, I think he’s on the fringe, Saleh loves Shep too much… maybe he beats out Curry? Nah, I don’t think he makes the 53

Thank you for yet another well thought out article. With Carl Lawson,Jermaine Johnso, JFM and Michael Clemons all locks for this roster Bryce Huff is indeed an interesting guy when you look at this position. No matter who ends up winning the final spot at DE it will be a fierce battle. We are going to have to cut some good players at that spot. Huff is another undersized DE at only 6’2 250ish. He and Houston import J.Martin are very similar players. If both make the roster guys like Z.Zuniga, Tim Ward, Vinny Curry,Bradly Anae and Ham Rasheed are destined to the waiver wire. Obviously some will end up on the p/s but when your good enough to be releasing guys like that your in pretty good shape.
