Good morning, ☕
The 2024 season hasn’t even started, yet I find myself looking ahead to 2025 today having realised that the Jets have 30+ players set to hit free agency. You’ve probably heard the phrase “all-in” a lot this off-season, but there certainly is significant evidence that’s exactly what the Jets are. But like with the Jets drafting Will McDonald last year to cover for Bryce Huff leaving this year, it’s always worth keeping one eye on the future.
NFL.com analyst Peter Schrager released his first mock draft of the season and he has the Jets taking Brock Bowers, a very popular pick at the moment.
The Jets have now been inserted as the betting favourite to draft Brock Bowers, and they’re pretty heavy favourites at most sites. Either all this talk of Brock Bowers is the greatest smokescreen there’s ever been, or the Jets are all over him. I’m equal parts excited and apprehensive about it. In January, I asked the question if Brock Bowers made sense and it’s probably time to reference that post again here for all the new subscribers.
Colorado State edge rusher Mohamed Kamara was in Florham Park visiting the Jets yesterday. The 6’1, 248lb rusher was the Mountain West Player of the Year last year and racked up 14 sacks and 64 pressures. Some see him as another Bryce Huff, as he can be electric off the edge but he does have some tackling issues missing 23.4% last year. He’s from Newark so he’d feel right at home coming back to the Jets.
We mentioned Troy Fautanu was visiting the Jets, well it’s been confirmed that he will be in Florham Park to meet with Jets brass today. I know he’s quite a popular name around these parts, so we’ll all be hoping that the visit goes well.
The Jets had a strong presence in Illinois yesterday to watch DT Johnny Newton who should hear his name called in the first road on draft night.
There are still a few things I’d like to see this off-season. The signing of a veteran running back is one, considering we have absolutely no idea what we have in Israel Abanikanda. The other is to reduce the number of 2025 free agents by signing a couple of key players to extensions. I’m surprised the Jets haven’t extended DJ Reed and reduced his 2024 cap at the same time. I’m also surprised the Jets have yet to extend Michael Carter II, but I’m hoping that happens before kickoff on opening day.
Let’s just take a quick look at the 2025 free agents split between offence, defence and special teams. Some of these guys are restricted like Irvin Charles, but a lot are unrestricted free agents.
