Good morning ☕
Being a Jets fan is never boring. We’ve come full circle and after testing and realising that both Tim Boyle and Trevor Siemian are awful QBs, the Jets have recommitted to Zach Wilson for the remainder of the season, which is the best move at this point. The Jets have bungled this season to the highest degree, now you have to see what you have in Zach Wilson. Like Robert Saleh said, he is the best option on the roster and that comes down to Joe Douglas’s mishandling of the backup situation.
We’ve spoken about this at length, but Joe Douglas was happy to go into the season with a soon-to-be 40-year-old QB coming off a season where he picked up several niggling injuries, a QB in Tim Boyle who’s never thrown more touchdowns than interceptions, even dating back to college and a QB who the team admitted needed a reset and time to sit and learn.
We’ve debated the financial ramifications of signing a better backup, but it was possible. Look at the contract handed to Dalvin Cook, look at the contract handed to Mecole Hardman and Randall Cobb. The Jets are also sitting on $6.5 million of cap space and could have made several moves to clear more cap. We could go on and on and on and maybe there is an element of truth that they didn’t want to further invest in the position after committing so much to Rodgers, but if you’re going to over-invest in one position make it the QB. Unfortunately, the off-season was spent trying to placate Aaron Rodgers and in the end that’s ended up hurting the Jets and Zach Wilson, who was supposed to be sitting and redshirting for a year.
Zach will now have the opportunity to showcase his talent and fight for that place on the team next season. I said this on Twitter (or X) yesterday but Zach now needs to take control of his destiny. We know that Hackett is an awful coordinator and the reason he’s had success in Green Bay is he had a HOF QB who will do what he wants. So if Hackett calls a short pass on 3rd and long, Zach needs to audible out of it and go on the attack.
