Good morning! ☕
We’re officially into week four which starts tomorrow night at MetLife stadium with the 1-2 Giants hosting the 1-2 Cowboys. Dallas have been poor to start the year but I’m fully expecting them to beat the Giants with relative ease. In the AFC East we have a few interesting games:
New York Jets vs Denver Broncos
Baltimore Ravens v Buffalo Bills
Miami Dolphins v Tennessee Titans
San Francisco 49ers v New England Patriots.
A lot of questions are going to be answered this week, starting with how good the Bills really are. Baltimore is by far the toughest test so far. New England are likely heading to 1-3 and we’re about to find out how bad this Dolphins team is.
If all goes to plan, the Jets should be sitting top of the AFC East come Tuesday morning.
🟢 I missed this one yesterday so apologies for that. Jalen Mills was signed to the Jets Practice squad on Monday night. Mills was with the Giants until being released in mid-August. Not being able to make the Giants is a bit of a red flag for me but this is a low risk, high reward move. Mills started 34 of the 43 games he played in New England recording 123 tackles, 2 interceptions, 13 passes defenced, 1 forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. He was also part of the Eagles Super Bowl LII victory. He has 8 years of experience, 7 interceptions and 53 passes defenced in his career. The Jets also signed linebacker Brandon Smith. In a corresponding move they released Jaylen Key
⚪ Against the Patriots the Jets totalled 70 offensive plays on eight series, an average of 8.75 plays/drive. That is the highest single-game average for the Jets in a win in franchise history according to the teams official site.
🟢 Another beautiful little nugget of information from the Jets official site. Saleh has now had two successful challenges that have resulted in the Jets being awarded a touchdown, which means he has as many successful replay challenges that resulted in a Jets TD in his 2021-24 tenure as the previous Jets HCs produced from 2007-20.
⚪ Sad news this morning with news overnight that former Jets QB Brett Favre has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, which is just terribly sad. Wishing Brett and his family the very best.
🟢 There’s one thing I’ve been wondering about the Haason Reddick situation and unable to find the answer myself, I reached out to Connor Hughes who’s always been happy to help me out with things I don’t know. I wondered how many games Reddick needed to be with the Jets to avoid his rights being carried over to 2025. Apparently that number is 6. If Reddick is on the roster (active or IR) for less than 6 games, the Jets retain his rights, if he’s on the roster for 6 or more, then he becomes a free agent. I think that’s an important note.
⚪ Aaron Rodgers was on the Pat McAfee show and he addressed that bogus Athletic article that basically say that the Jets were in disarray - "I would say the culture here is about the opposite of what that headline said. I didn't read the article, but just reading that headline there, it sounds like it was written by Haason Reddick's agent...former agent I guess, possibly, in a way to try and disparage our great organization."
🟢 In that same interview, Rodgers expressed some real love for his offensive line: “They have become the bodyguards, the police of the team, which is really, really, important,” Rodgers said. “The best teams I’ve been on, the line polices the squad and they have each other’s backs and they pick people up off the field and are the first ones in to back up a brother. Morgan [Moses] did that for me, and John [Simpson] as well, in Tennessee when Jeff Simmons gave me a hard little shoulder. The first person in there was [Moses]. The second person in there was John. Those guys were both in Baltimore last year. Obviously they bought into something in our culture that they can hold on to.”
⚪ He also took a swipe at some of these off-season storylines that seem to get blown our of all proportion - “When you perform like you do Thursday [in the Jets’ 24-3 win over the Patriots] and you’re 2-1, and obviously you never know what can happen as the season goes on, but I think you realize how ridiculous some of these offseason storylines can be,” Rodgers said. “Is anyone talking about minicamp anymore? Does anybody feel like that is an important contributor in the season? The answer is no, it shouldn’t. Because it’s not.”
🆙 Yahoo Sports - 6th (Last week: 9th)
“The Jets looked great on Thursday night. It will be interesting to see if that was their step forward or the Patriots being exposed. Up this week is a great one-on-one matchup as receiver Garrett Wilson takes on the Broncos' Pat Surtain II. The Denver CB helped limit Mike Evans to 17 yards on Sunday.”
