Good morning! ☕
It seems almost certain that the Jets will trade Zach Wilson, you can agree or disagree with that decision but at this point, I’d put the chances of Zach being with the Jets next year at less than 10%. The question is not whether he’ll be here or not, it’s what the Jets can get in return for him. That and a few other things on this chilly Tuesday morning!
📃 ESPN released their top-50 free agent list yesterday and there were a few interesting notes for the Jets. Bryce Huff came in at #18 and he was the only Jets representation on the list. “After recording a total of 7.5 sacks over his first three pro seasons, Huff produced 10 in 2023 for the Jets -- and his pass rush win rate of 21.8% ranked eighth in the league. He's a flamethrower off the edge, with an electric first step and the lower-body flex to turn the corner at a high rate of speed. Huff is a 3-4 outside linebacker with major upside in nickel passing situations.” - But, there is plenty of offensive line and wide receiver talent on that list. 5 different wide receivers and 9 different offensive linemen counting guards and tackles.
🗳️ Good news for Jermaine Johnson who is heading to the Pro Bowl as an injury replacement for Chargers edge rusher Khalil Mack. I don’t really care about the Pro Bowl personally, but I know it’s important for players who see it as real recognition. Johnson enjoyed a breakout this year with 7.5 sacks, 55 tackles, 11 TFL, 1 INT, 1 TD and 1 FF.
🥴 Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic is in Mobile for the Senior Bowl and he asked Jeff Ulbrich if he was frustrated that he didn't get any HC interviews: "No, I wasn't frustrated. I know how this works. It takes a year to get your name out there. I always feel like you have a year of people talking about it, it gets the narrative going and if we play well again, who knows? But my focus right now is winning a world championship with the New York Jets."
The Jets later hired Shawn Jefferson who was with the team in 2019-2020 as the wide receivers coach and assistant head coach to Adam Gase. It’s believed that Jefferson will take over as wide receivers coach from Zach Azzani, who followed Nathaniel Hackett from Denver last off-season. It’s unclear if Azzani will stay with the Jets in another capacity. Maybe Jefferson can help jumpstart Allen Lazard’s career in New York. The Panthers were not a good football team last year, but 33-year-old Adam Thielen went for over 1000 yards.
Judging trade value is a very difficult thing. All you need is one team to overvalue a prospect (in your eyes) to receiver + compensation. Nobody thought Jamal Adams would go for what he went for, nobody thought that Sam Darnold would go for what he went for, or at least very few people did.
