Good morning! ☕
By the Jets standards, this has been a pretty quiet off-season. Yesterday the players reported to camp and there was one key man missing, which is going to be a talking point until it isn’t.
We’ve got some quotes from the guys who did make it to 1JD as the real work begins. We’re about to be bombarded with slow motion Aaron Rodgers throws to Garrett Wilson, and I’ll be honest…I’m ready to embrace every single bit of it.
🟢 Haason Reddick is officially a camp holdout after failing to show up to training camp yesterday. He’ll now be fined $50k for every day that he misses. Reddick is scheduled to make $14.5 million this year and has been looking for a new contract for the past 12 months. The Eagles weren’t interested in providing it so they sent him to the Jets, who believed that he’d be happy playing out the final year of his previous deal. That doesn’t seem to be the case and now it’s a case of who blinks first. There’s a world where the Jets rip up his one year deal and come to terms on a new one-year deal that gives him a raise…but considering the Jets are relying heavily on Reddick this year, not having him in camp is less than ideal. That miscommunication at the time of the trade could come back to haunt the Jets. Multiple reporters have come out and stated that the Jets won’t negotiate with Reddick unless he’s in camp, so this standoff could get a little ugly.
⚪ Defensive captain C.J. Mosley was asked about the Reddick situation: “When you deal with contracts it doesn’t get to the locker room because we don’t control that. When he gets here we’ll have our two cents to say. But he’s a pro … when he gets here, it’ll be another great player to add to our defensive line.”
🟢 Quinnen Williams was also asked about the Reddick holdout and unfortunately this is what happens when a player doesn’t turn up, here’s what he had to say: “I try to stay out of all that. I know he’s an amazing football player and an amazing person. I’m sure they’ll iron everything out.” Quinnen also said that he felt the defense didn’t execute at a high enough level last year, considering we had one of the best defences in the league, the standards that are being set are championship calibre, and I love that.
⚪ Tyler Conklin chipped in with his thoughts on the media storm surrounding Aaron Rodgers skipping mandatory minicamp: “That was never an issue. He was here for every OTA practice … I don’t think anybody batted an eye about it.” He also spoke about those little things we call vibes: “Just being around today, everybody is excited to be around each other again. The vibes are high.”
🟢 Garrett Wilson was asked about all the big contracts being handed out to receivers and said he had to go and show he belongs in that elite group, but he’s not motivated by bagging a big deal. Instead it sounds as though he’s motivated by winning: “I really just want to be part of a team that’s great and reaches its full potential. The last two years have been what they’ve been and I’m excited for another opportunity to prove myself to the world.”
⚪ UDFA’s Leonard Taylor and Tyler Harrell both passed their physicals yesterday and as such they were removed from the PUP list to start camp. Great news for both of them.
✈️ Who will start next to Quinnen Williams when the Jets come out in their base formation against the San Francisco 49ers?
The Jets have six defensive tackles not named Williams, but it’s likely to come down to three players. Javon Kinlaw, Solomon Thomas or Leki Fotu.
I’m not going to completely count out Leonard Taylor III because I love a good underdog story and Leonard has all the talent required to play at a high level in the NFL. You also need to throw in Hard Knocks star Tanzel Smart.
