☀️ Good morning.
We're now 24 hours removed from the initial 53-man roster announcement.
The Jets were not awarded anyone on waivers but seven of their former players found a new home, which is a great testament to the depth of quality the Jets had.
I’m not sure if the Jets were not awarded players as teams took them before their claim or if they felt they didn’t need to claim anyone, but I’m confident we’ll see a veteran or two signed in the coming days.
I’m going to keep this one short and sweet as I’m still on holiday and barring any huge breaking news, I may take a break from releasing a TJW tomorrow.
🗞️ - Former Jets kicker Eddy Pineiro signed a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers. Pineiro lost out to Greg Zuerlein in the Jets kicking competition but considering he hit 100% of his field goals last season for New York, it was only a matter of time before he caught on elsewhere.
🗞️ - Chuma Edoga was claimed by the Atlanta Falcons after the Jets cut him on Tuesday. Edoga is expected to come in and compete for the RT job. Edoga who was born and raised in Atlanta Georgia was a 3rd round pick of the Jets out of USC back in 2019, but has disappointed in limited opportunities.
🗞️ - Javelin Guidry was claimed by the Arizona Cardinals. Guidry was replaced as the starting nickel cornerback by Michael Carter II last year and was somewhat of a surprise cut on Tuesday. It's no surprise to see Javelin get claimed during the waiver process.
🗞️ Linebacker and special teams standout Del'Shawn Phillips found a new home in Baltimore. Phillips was undrafted and had brief pit stops in both Atlanta and Buffalo before landing in NY. He may have only 31 tackles and a single sack to his name, but he's well respected and will bring some physicality to the special teams unit in Baltimore, we'll likely see Phillips week one.
🗞️ The Chicago Bears claimed TE/FB Trevon Wesco, the former West Virginia man was a 4th-round pick of the Jets and quickly became known as a good pass protector and run blocker. Wesco was never heavily involved in the passing game but he was somewhat of a surprise cut this week. Four different teams tried to claim him, making him the most popular player on waivers, the Browns, Bengals and Colts all out a claim in but the Bears had the better priority.
🗞️ One of the biggest surprise cuts on Tuesday was that of Jason Pinnock. The former cornerback turned safety had made great progress this off-season but was cut free from the Jets in favor of Ashtyn Davis and Tony Adams. He won't have to go far as he was picked up on waivers by the New York Giants, who got a good look at him last week during the joint practices and final pre-season game.
🗞️ Isaiah Dunn who was handed the biggest UDFA contract for the Jets last off-season was claimed by Seattle and Rachad Wildgoose was picked up by Washington. So three cornerbacks the Jets cut were picked up by other teams.
🗞️ La'Mical Perine was signed to the Eagles practice squad. The Jets picked Perine in the 4th round of the 2020 draft out of Florida but he’s managed just 263 passing yards and 2 touchdowns over the first two years. Sometimes a player needs a fresh start and Perine is definitely one of those players. Best of luck to him in Philadelphia.
🗞️ Coach Saleh confirmed that Vinny Curry is a candidate for short term IR, meaning there is a chance he could miss the first four games of the season. That hasn't been confirmed but Saleh mentioning it makes it very likely, that would open a roster spot in the short term.
13 Players added to Practice Squad
Although the Jets didn’t make any moves on the waiver wire, they did confirm that 13 players had been added to their practice squad. This means there are still three spaces available.
QB Chris Streveler
WR Tarik Black
WR Irvin Charles
WR Calvin Jackson Jr
TE Kenny Yeboah
OL Chris Glaser
OL Grant Hermanns
DT Jonathan Marshall
DT Tanzel Smart
DE Bradley Anae
LB Hamsah Nasirildeen
LB DQ Thomas
S Will Parks.
On the face of it I don’t have any issues with any of these guys coming back. I’m delighted for Streveler who had an outstanding pre-season and Will Parks should be on the starting 53, so I’m glad to see him back and I’m pretty confident he’ll see the field this year for the Jets.
Calvin Jackson returning was a great move for the Jets, Jackson was one of the more impressive players through pre-season with two game-winning touchdown catches and multiple practices where he stood out.
Bradley Anae had a really strong pre-season and I was surprised to see Vinny Curry stick over him, but if Curry does end up going on IR and missing the first four weeks of the season, the Jets have a ready-made replacement ready.
Hamsah will be given more time to develop and I do have a soft spot for DQ Thomas, so it’s good to see his name announced straight away, same for Irvin Charles who has an incredible amount of potential, but needs some seasoning.
Hermanns has played well this pre-season and the Jets needed some tackle depth, so good to have him back and I’ve heard multiple times how much the Jets like Chris Glaser…obviously not enough to keep him on the 53, but enough to keep him around.
Although it hasn’t been officially announced by the team, Chazz Surratt’s agent confirmed that he was joining the Jets practice squad after being released by the Vikings. Surratt was a 3rd round pick of the Vikings in 2021 out of North Carolina and the former QB has a ridiculous athletic profile. He had over 200 tackles in college, including 22.5 for a loss and 12.5 sacks. He has excellent speed for the position, and while he didn't have the opportunity to showcase that talent in Minnesota, he’s a prime candidate to stash and develop, especially at a position where we have few long-term solutions as things stand.
Joe Douglas spoke to the media yesterday, and among the standard comments about how good the roster is, how happy they are with the 53, how difficult the cuts were and how he expects the Jets to be playing meaningful games in December, there were a couple of interesting notes:
💥 The Jets really wanted Jason Pinnock to clear waivers so they could stash him on the practice squad, but the Giants claimed him. I think releasing Pinnock in favour of Davis/Adams was a huge mistake and could haunt Douglas down the line.
💥 The Jets have received calls from teams interested in Mims as mentioned earlier this week on TJW but nothing has come from the talks as the offers have not met the Jets value. Joe confirmed that Pinnock doesn't necessarily want to leave the Jets, he just wants to play more.
I'm convinced Davis has naked photos of Joe Douglas or something. Only explanation to keep him over Parks/Pinnock
This Practice Squad provides excellent depth at Linebacker ( Surratt), Wide Receiver, and Defensive Tackle. Although Grant Hermann was signed, Jets are still light at OT. Thank goodness, Will Parks is still with us at Safety, but my concern is the loss of three CB’s in Dunn, Wildgoose & Guidry. Nothing in the pipeline. The Jets are carrying six CB’s on the 53, but one of them is Hardee. The depth for 3 CB positions is Hall & Echols , that’s it .Would assume that Tony Adams is the back up slot.
The Jets are currently 2 million OVER the CAP, they need to get in compliance by September 6th. Just a little housekeeping, they also need some operating room for the season, expect 5 million in restructured money. Limits any other move.
