Also it's worth noting that on Allen's TD run, Rodgers changed the play call at the line, probably don't score if he doesn't do that.

And here I thought I was banned, banished like so many Jet GMs and HCs, lol.

You can call me Debbie Downer but since I’ve been a Jet fan since 1963 and I’m 75, I’ve been a Jet fan for 84% of my life.

I’ve seen it all I was at the Miami rain game, the spike game and of course the Monday night miracle.

Over the years, I have celebrated every win like New Years Eve, I never gave up hope about a playoff spot no matter what their record was, I lived and died during every game with false hope until they were officially eliminated.

Maybe I’ve turned into a crotchety old sour grouch, but after yesterday’s game, I wasn’t really happy at all. JJ’s injury definitely added to this. Like one Jet blogger said on X, the Jets can never have nice things.

While David hit on many of the reasons for my grouchiness, I really don’t want to bore the brigade with redundancy.

I don’t think this team can win with Saleh. From this moment on, I will refer to him as Coach DejaVu

Again as in every game he has head coached for the Jets, a few signature examples of DejaVu’s regime is that his team always start slows, always takes the dumbest penalties at the most in opportune time and seems to take the most penalties every game.

Did they really show any improvement in their run game defense after SF chopped and diced them up like a Ginsu knife Monday night.

Levis’s ill advised backward pass probably helped win the game for the Jets because the Titans would have run that ball in to make the score 14-0.

Isn’t it amazing that all time NFL great quarterback at time resembled Zach Wilson at the line of scrimmage yesterday.

Is it possible that Rodgers best friend was calling in plays that Rodgers knew were unworkable and he was trying to change them to the personnel that was on the field.

Unfortunately I really think that it is time for the Jets to permanently bench Mosely.

You cannot deny as Lord Hupton said that the defense played better when he was out.

Bobby Sabo is a Jet blogger who really diagnoses plays the way Baldinger does but while the game is going on

From him yesterday during the game

“Notice something since Moseley got hurt

Salah’s scheme requires speedy MLB - it’s noticeable.

My people, guess what? The #Jets defense has looked better since Jamien Sherwood was forced into action. Plus, shout out to Javon Kinlaw; like Sherwood, he's also come to play today.

Sherwood stepped in for an injured CJ Mosley and proceeded to lead the #Jets in tackles (1 for a loss) and break up a pass

Remember this guy played safety in college — it’s taken him a bit to learn the LB position, but Saleh really works wonders on these guys.

.***********************************

Wasn’t McDonalds 3 sacks the quietest in NFL history, announcers really gave him no credit for his first two, his third probably was a game winner.

Lastly, there is an old saying, “ Never let the facts get in the way of a good story”

CBS has the nerve to show Hackett and Rodgers together on the field and say that in 2020 they led the NFL in offense as OC and quarterback.

Hackett was nothing but a coffee gopher back then.

The HC was calling all the plays for the Pack.

Lastly#2, unlike most after game writers were pointing out that the Jets would call Where’sWalfo#7. but not so fast.

Maybe they will but Waldo has 4 games to make a decision or next year, ironically, it will be Deja Vue all over again for him. He might have gotten some leverage yesterday but maybe game film will show different.

It can only happen to the Jets.

Geez Bobber, no mention of Ron’s long term non love of Mosely? I’ve been a non fan since he bugged out on us his second season here ( Covid). He hasn’t been the same guy that looked so good in that half game he played before he was injured. 😂

I didn’t know you weren’t a Mosley.

I think the quotes I put up from Bobby Sabo says it all.

You know Mosley really didn’t take a lot of heat when he jumped off sides up in Buffalo on a 4th and inches play that turned the momentum 180% against the Jets. Like your favorite Jet Kyle Clifton all his tackles are downfield and he has a couple of dropped interceptions during his time here. He treats the football like a live grenade

Campaigned to get WR Irvin Charles cut. The Jets need another viable WR , that hasn’t changed. Charles an UNDFA from Penn State and the University of Indiana Pennsylvania ? Signed in 2022, has yet to show anything as a Wide Reciever. Last year Irvin made some plays on ST, but IMO didn’t demonstrate consistent excellence in Special Teams. Wanted the guy cut. Yesterday , Irvin Charles blocked a punt, changing the momentum of the game, and provided excellent Special Teams coverage throughout the game. I was wrong , so wrong. My hope is that Charles who is 6’4 220 continues his outstanding ST work, and develop as a WR , even in a limited capacity, at his size could be an outstanding blocker. Once again, so wrong.

Expand full comment

You weren't alone, my friend. I felt the same way. I'm happy to admit that I was wrong. Since he doesn't or can't contribute on offense, imo he needs to continue to excel on STs to justify his roster spot.

JO, yeah, I’ve had this conversation with you before 😂 I’m a big Charles fan. They never give him an opportunity to make plays on offense. I do recall him looking good his rookie season making a nice TD catch in a preseason game. Caught a couple others in that game too.

It maybe about opportunity. Charles is a physical specimen, possibly WR Coach Shawn Jefferson could get something out of him. There have been UNDFA ‘s that have played ST, and suddenly blossomed in their third or fourth year as a position player. Sometimes it’s just about finding a role.

The Jets were really lucky to win yesterday. If it wasn't for Levis imploding, the Jets more than likely would be looking at 0-2. As has been the usual for Saleh's Jets, they came out flat, were undisciplined and stunk things up quite a bit. It has been this way for 3 years now and there is no excuse for it. Personally, I think Saleh and Hackett should be let go right now. Both are useless and provide no positives at all. It was sheer torture watching Saleh at the presser after the game, he's just a cardboard cutout up there and not saying anything that means anything.

Hackett is retarding the progress of the offense, as Rodgers seemed to be changing a LOT of plays at the line, which probably induced most of those wasted timeouts and delay-of-game penalties. He has no imagination at all, and Rodger's affinity for him is worth the same as a bucket of warm spit.

The o-line is still in the gelling stage and the interior run blocking is atrocious, though some of that can be laid at the feet of Hackett's play calls. That third-and-1where they loaded up the jumbo package was just ridiculous. It's like Hacket called the Titans DC and told him, we're going straight through here. The Titans have two very good DT's who seem to be able to play the run AND the pass equally well, unlike the Jets' DT's. They need to activate Taylor and at least give him a shot; it can't be worse than it already is. It's sad to say, but the Jets were more active on defense after CJ went out. Q2 really seemed to take charge, and Sherwood is showing the promise that the team was hoping for. CJ has had a long career, but he's not the player he once was and has lost several steps. Making tackles that let the RB drag out 4 or 5 more yards are really no tackles at all. I have something on the stove and have to break off for now, lol. In these immortal; words of Ahhhhh-Nold, "I'll Be Back".

Sauce had a really weak game, but Echols played quite well. The safeties were problematic, with Clark being just a bit short in making plays all through the game.

The Jets interior Offensive Line , Simpson, Tippman, & Vera Tucker is off to a slow start. They have been stuffed in short yardage, and have not decisively won the line of scrimmage . In steps Braelon Allen, everyone will marvel at the speed Brealon showed on those outside runs, and the two passes that he caught, and rightly so, but a major impact came from his inside runs, straight ahead from 4 to 6 yards, allowing the Jets interior to fire off the ball and dominate the Defensive Line. Jets Offensive Line got a boost of confidence from Allen.

Jets never known for Offensive innovation, at the very least , demonstrated that they could run a Wildcat successfully with Breece Hall.

Expand full comment

The line looked physical, yet disjointed. The guy who seemed to struggle from time to time was Vera Tucker. I saw him trailing an unblocked defensive lineman who was busy blowing up a play. That is admittedly anecdotal, but it suggests growing pains among the interior linemen. Their combo blocks looked a little bit off. It was interesting to see them struggle to lock on to their two-man combos. They would, either, climb to the backer too early, resulting in him scraping underneath and shooting the gap, or they'd get there too late, resulting in the above instance of a lineman (at least twice it was Vera Tucker) chasing a loose defender into the backfield. Their angles were a little off all day long. I also noticed there was some leakage from the backside. The backside guard wasn't always cutting off the nose and that usually blew the play up. I think that, sometimes, that nose was All Pro Jeffrey Simmons. This makes me wonder what the game plan was with regard to the offensive line and who they were going to place the burden of Jeffrey Simmons on. Were they going to tell Vera Tucker and Simpson that they were going to be responsible for cutting that man off on their own without help or were they going to get an assist from Tippman (usually a delayed post hand on his way to his combo with the playside guard). I also wonder whether if they noticed something in the way the TItans were going to line Simmons up that they thought they could exploit, and whether they realized it wasn't going to work. There is a lot going on there, and it isn't necessarily all play-call (not that I think Hackett is stellar at his job), considering most teams are going to be calling a couple of plays at once (allowing to quarterback to choose the best fit for the look). At the end the of the day, the offensive line is still in the process of building a rapport considering that the only remaining pair from last season is Vera Tucker and Tippman.

Expand full comment

“Physical yet Disjointed” great description of this current Offensive Line. Optimistic that communication and combo blocks will improve. Once again, Allen running inside could help that process.

Honestly I have been watching Tipp and he looks great. Made some great blocks. I think our opponents have scouted us better than we scout them. Mentioned several times on David’s game thread that the Titans appeared to know what was coming often. They blew up Breece for a 6 yard loss and the defender looked like he was shot out of a cannon. No way that happens if he didn’t know what was coming.

Great article, David. My game thoughts;

- Allen is a beast and clearly number one RB potential - RB’s can be two headed monster if Jets are smart.

- Will McDonald’s game will keep Reddick debate quiet enough for JD to negotiate a reasonable deal.

- Hackett and Aaron not being on same page is causing those delays. Could be wrong.

- Sauce was absolutely terrible entire game and could cost Jets game with that holding in end zone on final stand. He’s reading his own press and needs a kick in the butt.

- Saleh’s timeout at end of first was beyond stupid. Gave them 3 points. It’s another example of his over confidence in the D.

- Aaron was not accurate in this game other than last drive. Needs to hit Garrett more cleanly to allow him to operate after catch.

- Aaron is moving better and better which is extremely encouraging.

- D played so much better against run with Mosley out and Quincy playing the middle. Should be a permanent change but Saleh will go back to the old man at Jets peril - especially against NE which is a pure run team.

Good point on Sauce on that final drive Doug. Thought to put that in last night and then forgot about it this morning. Was a definite hold on Hopkins who had him turned around. Jets lucky that didn't get called.

Also, he blew it on the Ridley TD. Needs to turn around - It’s why he rarely gets picks. His game is only 80 percent of where it could be. Needs to stop listening to media.

I feel as though he knew he had Clark as help over the top, so he was defending it that way. I mean it was an amazing catch so hat tip to Ridley, but thought Sauce gave up and Clark was too late to get over.

Expand full comment

Very un-Jet like to not have it called. Seems like those calls are my entire Jet experience for last 57 years.

Expand full comment

Sauce holds on most plays. The fact that it wasn't called is probably indicative of of the referees not calling his handsy technique earlier in the game. Most corners are going to test the officiating early on to determine where they're focusing. The same holds true along the offensive line. You hold until you get called; then you've found the red line not to cross the rest of the game.

I am very high on Sauce but he needs to step it up and get picks if he wants to be elite.

There's no way Reddick is going to sign a "reasonable" deal. He has been completely unreasonable since the Jets traded for him. Many think that he will never play for the Jets. I really don't think the Jets should sign him even with Johnson down for the season. I despise Reddick. I hope that JD changes his mind and trades him to another team. I'd rather sink or swim with the team we've got rather than bring that greedy, mercenary POS in. The only way that Reddick would play would be if JD gave him a 2-3 year extension with a lot of guaranteed money and big contract. There's no way JD should do that.

I agree with the rest of your points.

Expand full comment

I agree 2000% Craig. He's a POS of the first order. First of all, there's NO way JD is going to give him an extension. He's definitely not going to make the first move. Let him sit home. They should look to sign someone, I think Ngokue is still available. JD should see if he's amenable to joining up, but no long-term deal. And Clemons needs to be put on the PS, he's about as useful as tits on a bull. Activate Taylor for NE and see what he can do at the DT spot.

Expand full comment

Good point. I don’t believe JD will do a long term deal. The guy is losing almost $1m a game. And the Jets have his rights for next year if he doesn’t play this year. Reddick’s agent needs to get to this guy. He is committing professional suicide.

Expand full comment

I read somewhere the other day that his agent had been trying to get him to report and that Reddick has refused. I don't know if that's true or not, or was just speculation on the part of the reporter.

Reddick is just totally stupid. He's costing himself a ton of money, making himself look like a major pain in the ass and an idiot. I can't imagine any team having interest in signing him, but read that I think the Lions and Bengals have interest in trading for him. If so, JD ought to let both know that Reddick is available and see if a bidding war develops. If so, maybe the Jets can recoup the 3rd round pick that they gave up for Reddick, or maybe a S or WR that can help the team.

Expand full comment

He wasn't drafted and signed for his intelligence, just his physical ability. This entire episode just shows how stupid he really is. And the market for him is not as viable as all these "experts" who come up with these fanciful, "stupendous", lol, trade scenarios. He is pissing in his own pool. I can't see any GM with two brain cells to rub together and the merest touch of common sense wanting to add this malefactor to the roster. The fact that no one, to my knowledge, has contacted JD about a trade is very telling also.

doug, you really thought the fun defense was better? I didn’t see it that way at all. For some reason the Titans got away from it but I thought they were running a lot better than we were in the first half.

I was shocked at the beginning of the game when Pollard ran for 3 yards then 4-5 on the next play, and then they called a pass play. Why? I know that Pollard is a smaller, more elusive-type back and couldn't take a stead pounding, but they could have run him again there or brought in his backup and gotten the 1st down. Instead they had to punt. Based on what I've read about the game, I think if they had run the ball more, the Jets would have lost.

David, crazy game for sure. For most of the game it was impossible to ignore the fact that offensively we didn’t seem to get fooling the Titans at all. Too many hits on our RB’s at or behind the line of scrimmage.Breece getting blown up on a first down run for a 6 yard loss. Plays like that had us behind the sticks way too often. Fortunately AR was able to hit Williams for a nice gain and first down but it often appeared that Tennessee was well coached and well prepared. On the other hand it often appeared we weren’t. We had to use 3 time outs to avoid delay of game penalties and had we played a better team that’s just not gonna work out for us. Some of that was obviously on Rodgers who seems to like waiting till the last second to get the ball snapped. I’m not sure I’m a fan of that as it also gives the defense a head start attacking the play as the clock ticks down to zero. I’m with you David, happy with the win but very concerned.

Expand full comment

Don't disagree with you there Ron. My issue was we were slow to adapt. We may want to use those A-gap runs and against some opponents that will work, but Tennessee have two big dominant DT's in Simmons and Sweat and they were both absorbing double teams which allowed the linebackers to come through those A-gaps untouched. Once we started to bounce some outside we got some good gains, that Allen TD run is a perfect example of an off-tackle run working because the linebackers were A-gapping. So credit that we eventually made the change, but it took us well into the 3rd quarter to do it, against better teams they'd have been out of sight.

Agree on the play clock issues, that's concerning. I don't mind Rodgers taking the clock down but...it has to be unpredictable when you're snapping the ball under 10 seconds and you have to actually get that ball snapped. Putting that down to rust as I can't recall Rodgers being particularly bad (although I may look into that now).

Yeah, either way we gotta clean that up. Just curious but when you started doing the Jets Way we had the ability to go back and correct mistakes in our comments. David and Ron, I read on the other fan site that Rodgers was either changing the play or changing the protection. He's a smart veteran. He knows that snapping the ball at 1 second or 0 gives the D an advantage and that it is horrible for a QB to get a delay of game penalty called on him. There has to be a valid reason why that was happening. My guess is that Hackett was calling in absolutely horrific play calls for the personnel that was on the field, or just bad calls in general, and that the Titans' D were doing some different things which caused Rodgers to have to audible out of a play or change the protections at the last minute. Still, unless the Jets are spending too long in the huddle, I don't see why that should happen as good and quick as Rodgers is at reading the opposing D.

I woke up at 4 AM thinking about all those delay of game time-outs and penalties.....

Great game wrap up and great video! I have a question...why does the video on this site look like it's running at 1.5x or 2x faster than real action????

JJ is one of my favorite Jets. I'm sick that he tore his achilles. I'm praying for complete healing and recovery with no negative effects on the rest of his career.

I didn't make it out of the 1st Qtr of the game. The Jets looked awful, and I just knew that they were going to lose.

I've wondered if the D would look better with Sherwood playing MLB rather than with Mosely. It's great to hear that he played so well! In addition to your comments, PFF gave Sherwood the highest grade on the Jets' D yesterday, and on the other Jets' site, it was unanimous that the D played better with Sherwood on the field. I also read that at times the Jets played 3 LBs yesterday. Perhaps that's the answer to helping the run D. Ulbrich makes adjustments, which makes it even more maddening that Hackett is such a cipher.

I'm glad that McDonald came up big with the sacks, but otherwise PFF wasn't impressed. Hopefully, he has a lot more sacks in him, especially since JJ is gone for the season.

On the other site, I read that Rodgers almost got called for Delay of the Game penalties twice and Saleh saved him and the Jets by taking a timeout. Posters were saying that Rodgers was changing plays or protection schemes and frequently the play clock was down to 1-2 seconds. That needs to change. If Hackett's play calling is that bad (which I'm certain that it is, in addition to being so predictable), then Hackett needs to be benched or fired.

I'm glad that Charles contributed in a big way on STs. The Jets need him to and he needs to in order to justify his taking a roster spot.

Posters on that other site said that Sauce looked awful yesterday. David and others, do you agree? If so, why do you think he's playing poorly?

There is no excuse for eithe shoddy tackling or dumb penalties. I followed the game for a while on NFL.com that does a play-by-play. Twice in the short time I watched the game Jets' DL lined up off sides or jumped. One of them was Takk and I forget who the other one was. Both are going to cost Jets games if they don't get cleaned up immediately.

The way the game started out, I thought Pollard was going to have 100 yards by halftime. The Jets are lucky that he is a smaller, more elusive-type RB. The Titans had to mix the pass in and with Levis not playing so well that saved the Jets. If they still had Henry, the Titans may have run the ball on 14 consecutive plays like the Raiders did against the Jets a few years ago. I don't know if it was having Sherwood on the field or 3 LBs or Kinlaw stepping up, but whatever it was, the Jets need to continue to do that and improve vs the run. For certain, better tackling would help.

Allen definitely needs to get more snaps. I don't care if it does piss Breece off. I think it was Conor Rodgers who said something about the Jets using both Breece and Allen in the backfield at the same time. Did that actually happen in one of the games or was Rodgers just suggesting that the Jets do that. I think several of us here thought that would be a great idea during TC.

Expand full comment

I was watching Jets Postgame, and Rodgers, Breece and Allen all mentioned playing more two-back sets. Their skills are complimentary and could cause a lot of confusion for the defense. And I'm sure they could put Breece out there at wideout a few times a game and take advantage if they put a linebacker on him. And did you notice on his TD run, even though it was a huge hole, no one was making a beeline to get in his way, lol.

Expand full comment

Good eyes on picking up that three linebacker sets. They were playing a lot of base sets without a nickel (at least more than usual). The broadcast was even pointing out Chaz Surratt getting into the game when Mosley went down. It was also interesting to note that three safety sets largely featured Isaiah Oliver instead of Ashtyn Davis. That might have more to do with the skill set Oliver brings. It was also interesting to see that the Jets were rotating through a number of their defensive linemen. While Quinnen Williams played the highest snap percentage that I've seen from him (74%), Kinlaw and McDonald were in for a little over 50% of snaps, Clemons was in for exactly 50%, Jermaine Johnson was at just below 50% when he left (so probably means he was going to be in the mid-60s range), Tak McKinley was at 35%, Jalyn Holmes was at 23%, and Braiden McGregor was at 18%. They're really looking for combinations. Also notable, regarding the point about Ashtyn Davis: he played no defensive snaps but led the team with 21 ST snaps (Sam Eguavoen was at #2 with 20 snaps, then Isaiah Davis and Irvin Charles with 18 apiece).
