Good morning! ☕
Games against the Patriots aren’t supposed to be that easy. Games on national television aren’t supposed to be that straight forward. But at no point during last night’s game were we in danger of losing it.
Aaron Rodgers was in complete control and while my heart was in my mouth when he took off running, he looked pretty quick for a 40-year-old QB coming off a serious and season-ending injury.
The only black mark on the night was the knee injury which forced Morgan Moses out. Robert Saleh declined to comment on the severity and Moses will have tests today, but when a lineman gets rolled up on and instantly clutches their knee…it’s not usually good news. But, this is why you draft an offensive tackle. Olu Fashanu came in and did a good job in the second half and he’ll almost certainly be called on over the coming weeks.
I’m operating on a significant lack of sleep, so we’re going to keep this one short and sweet today.
I’ll probably be able to get some more coherent thoughts down on Monday, but I’m going to start this thing with an OPTA stat sent by my buddy Andres:
I think this stat encapsulates how dominant the Jets were last night. The defense that has been questioned through the first two weeks of the season were close to pitching a shutout.
They held a divisional opponent out of our end-zone, limited the Patriots to 139 total yards which worked out at a paltry 2.9 yards per play, the dangerous Rhamondre Stevenson was held to under 4 yards per carry and the Jets absolutely destroyed that patchwork offensive line to the tune of 7 sacks.
There really were only two negatives to come from game:
The injury to Morgan Moses. Keeping this offensive line healthy and together was always going to be a key. If Moses is done for a significant part of the season, that’s a huge loss for the Jets.
Penalties. Again, I don’t agree with some of the calls but the Jets were flagged for 10 penalties resulting in 106 yards lost. Against the Patriots, we got away with is…but if we want to be serious contenders, we need to sharpen up.
Saying that. This isn’t a negative newsletter, this is celebrating a great win against a team who have given us fits. It’s about celebrating a win on Thursday Night Football, something we haven’t enjoyed for a while and it’s about celebrating getting above that .500 mark as well. We’re now 2-1 with the Broncos on deck, the expectation is that we make that 3-1 and go to London full of confidence.
