Edition #897: In just 24 hours the Jets veterans will report to camp and then the real work begins. Today we continue our preview series with a look at defensive tackles.
OK kids, first of all let’s all remember not every DT is ideally suited to excel in every phase of the game. Basically we have our 1-2 techniques that stop the run. They basically do that by either making the tackle or by tying up blockers which frees up the LB’s to make the tackle. Then we have the 3tech’s that are the better athletes capable of using speed and quickness to penetrate into opponents backfield vs.the run or to pressure the QB vs.the pass. That’s what “Q” is. That’s also what Leonard Taylor is. He’s not a good run defender so pairing him with “Q” is really not gonna be a regular thing. If we recall he fell in the draft last year because Miami tried playing him as a 1, 2 tech. Basically a NT. That’s not his game. He’s a penetrator like “Q”. NFL teams do not play multiple 3tech’s together as it makes them vulnerable to the run. As for the other stiffs we have a have to agree with David. They aren’t very good and my expectations are dim. Unless one of the undrafted rookies shakes free or AG can inspire one or two of our offseason imports to play a lot better than they have our run defense may be even worse that what we saw last season.
It would be hard for the run D to be worse this year, but I guess anything is possible. I think the discipline that Glenn and Wilks will bring, plus a focus on fundamentals (tackling and gap discipline), and scheme changes could help, but will they, and if so, by how much?
As David pointed out, LT 3 had one of the top run defense grades on the Jets last year, so maybe he has improved, but more likely, he looked good because he was a rookie trying to make the team and prove he belonged in the NFL while the rest of the Jets defenders gave up after Saleh was fired. At any rate, I think it is possible that we could see more of LT 3 beside Q than we thought. I scoffed at the idea of two 3T DTs playing side-by-side, but with the scrubs the Jets have, he may prove to be the best of the lot. Hopefully, there will be a camp cut signing that will help in this regard.
I do like like LT3 and the UDFA’s on the D line. These guys are hungry. Will be interesting.
There is nobody less interesting than Kyle Brandt. I met him in person and while he is nice enough, there is nobody on earth more interested in being liked than Kyle. Unfortunately in NY, that means bashing the Jets if you are in the media. Boomer Esiason is another example - biggest Jet hater of them all.
Kyle Brandt was on The Real World: Chicago back in 2001 and he regularly is pretty good on the Ringer's The Rewatchables. He is not, however, a go-to source of NFL knowledge. Him talking about why Bloodsport was a kick-ass movie? Sign me up! Him talking about who will succeed in this year's NFL? Pass.
He’s hated every QB in that building for the last 10 years and influenced Woody with his short fuse, which has been a disaster. Just watch him go after Justin. He grew up a Giant fan on LI and hates the Jets.
I totally disagree, Douglas. Boomer played for the Jets. He wants them to do well. He's embarrassed that a team he played for has been so inept and abysmally bad. He's criticial because he's right and the truth hurts. Woody needs to stay out of the way and let the football people run the team.
You can disagree all you want but you are wrong imo. Boomer has not said anything good about a Jet QB ever. He is a meaningless blowhard and his partner is even worse, so I don’t care to spend time discussing him. Agree to disagree.
I still can't believe that Kinlaw got that size of a contract. Did I miss something about his performance last year? I think Quinnen will definitely rebound this year. and I think Leonard Taylor might be a real pleasant surprise. I don't know about the rest of those guys.
Kinlaw’s signjng definitely was the figment of someone’s imagination
Taylor presently would be most knowledgeable fans choice to succeed
Again, coaching and discipline will be the big factors here, based on previous year’s results, Coach all gas, no brakes and Ulbrich didn’t really shine in those departments or their schemes were just horrible
You are 1000% correct Bobber. Kinlaw was a zero from the getgo. It's not surprising that Q had a down year, he was basically manning the middle of the d-line alone. I'd love for Taylor to break out, but he's a 3-tech like Q is with a better propensity for the pass-rush as opposed to the run game. The Jets need a 350+lb. 1-tech to clog up the middle and eat up blockers. In watching Joe Blewett's review on Q, he was hit by so many combo and double-team blocks it wasn't even funny. He did excel in spots, but not on an overall basis. He's still highly talented, but he's basically on an island.
Unless he wants a huge contract, I definitely think the Jets should sign Fant. He might prefer playing for a playoff team, but will any of them be interested in him? He's been a pretty big disappointment in the NFL.
I love JJ's and Wilson's attitude. Hopefully, both will have huge years.
It usually happens to me after I clear my browsing history or when I clear trackers with my antivirus coverage. Outside of that, it usually runs pretty cleanly.
Two years ago the Jet defensive line was considered one of the strong points of the team.
Then a few things happened that altered the makeup of the line.
The Jets let Bryce Huff sign with the Eagles ( no offer was ever made) and then the Jets during the 2024 draft inexplicably traded JFM to Denver.
Myers had he best career statistical season with the Broncos last season.
Rumor has it Woody Johnson had something to do with getting rid of Myers. Maybe his son, The Madden football champ had something to do with it. What’s next, decisions made by Strat-o- Magic football results.
JD in his tenure had made some really puzzling decisions. Maybe he can write a book one day to explain the head scratchers.
A few title suggestions could be, “ It was all Woody, not me”, or I was Woody’s Puppet”or “ Madden Football ruled the Jets.”
*** We are presently taken title suggestions from the Brigade***
As far as Q’s season from last year goes. It appears that a total malaise overtook the whole defense last season.
Surely I can be corrected on this by the intelligent talent evaluators who frequent the Jet Way but it seems that Sherwood was the only Jet to rise to the occasion last season.
Last year defense will definitely be remembered as underachievers who constantly missed tackles, dropped sure interceptions, blew coverages, took a ridiculous amount of dumb penalties and just looked totally disinterested at times. If a stop had to be made in the fourth quarter, it just didn’t happen.
Unfortunately the defensive line last year could have been called the “ Green Matadors.”
As opposing running backs rushed with relative ease through the defense as the defense waved them by last season.
Fireman Man could have been in the stands, instead of saying J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets, could have been leading a chorus of Ole, Ole,Ole.
Since we are constantly reminded of Glenn’s connection with Parcells.
Parcells had a line he used to describe players who were here for the short term.
Aside from Q, all the rest of the defensive tackles this season can be called “Hold the fort guys”, unless they prove different.
I’m sure that David during the coming college football season will be giving us many analysis of prospective future Jet defensive tackles.

True but it might be worse. Coaching aside if these guys don’t play better than their past history it could be ugly.

How is Boomer a Jets hater?! Never heard anyone else say this so...

David, for the 2nd time in a week Substack made me have to “ verify “ to comment? I mentioned this last week so is there a way you can clarify this?
