Re: Pinnock - Just like the number dispenser at the supermarket deli, I've got one, too, on the Pinnock Muff by JD. Ya win some & lose some, as you say. BUT...
Perhaps a little, squeeky bit'o'light in this story??? You rightly note Pinnock's versatility, he can play anywhere. Good but not great. Can still get toasted, but to his credit, he "forgets" quickly, moves on and delivers quality play. Sound like anyone on our squad now? I say yes; Tony Adams.
Adams exhibits the same qualities as Pinnock - but at a slightly higher level then Jason, imho. I don't think Adams has been toasted this year, and he has delivered some truly Great play, notably the pick vs the Eagles.
So the sourness of losing Pinnock stings a bit less - though I "what-might've been" myself sometimes, thinking about a back end with Whitehead/Adams/Pinnock which would have allowed JD to allocate resources elsewhere instead of Chuck Clark and Amos. Maybe a harsh take on Clark on my part; he's a really good safety and when he was signed, I was Hoo-RAYing that move, absolutely. But would the move have been necessary if Pinnock were on the squad? Would have been a luxury, considering the other enduring issues on the OLine we've seen.
Still, if you can all kinda see what I'm getting at, that Pinnock and Adams are similar players in abilities - then this must be credited to Saleh's approach on getting very athletic guys that can play safety, can potentially grow into capable linebackers but with a "+" mark in their coverage skills department.
And, while giving credit to the coaching mindset about what type of players to get, I always come back to that thing Saleh said in year one, that the difference between a 1st rounder and a 6th rounder was getting the reps. And this mindset has paid off handsomely then with Michael Carter, who came in as a 5th rounder fm Duke and has transformed into what I think is the best Slot Cover CB in the league. That he did this, especially in this tough Defense, speaks volumes to MC2's drive and excellence, and to Coach Saleh's, Brich's, Oden's and the rest of the staff's capabilities.
It's like the tip of the iceberg, fellas - we see only the 5% that can be viewed at a quick glance; but the mass of the berg below the surface... well that's the work that everyone here has put into developing this young man. The same can be said for Quincy, Echols - and I have confidence that in time, will also be said for Mitchell, Charles, Anaconda, Carter, Kuntz, etc.
We got ourselves a bunch of good ones, guys. What a turnaround from the Gase years!
What a fun, fun time to be a Jets Fan! People talk about the jints game being a trap game of sorts, say this is the kinda game the SOJ would lose, then tailspin out of. I think we're going to be OK vs the crosstown crybabies; many of our guys through the whole 53 remember the bitter feeling of coming up short, of not playing together through whatever adversity the Football gods lay upon us.
And I think maybe - just maybe... the football gods are taking a break from their laughs at our bumblings.
Lawson & Cook enhanced their trade value in their media sessions, quality professionals, ( was that the plan ?). The loss of Pinnock, was tragic, it was a miscalculation, I have always blamed Brant Boyer and his influence on roster decisions voting to keep Ashtyn Davis over Jason. Davis had more reps than Adrian Amos against the Eagles, the kid is a zombie, you can’t cut him. In 2024 Whitehead May leave in FA, Davis is a cheap alternative, the kid is a zombie. Boyer had some terrific things to say about Hall and Charles, very curious to see where their careers are going to go. Bryce is a possible trade candidate, were Boyers remarks part of the marketing plan ?
Will Breece Hall have a bigger effect on the running game or the passing game ? I’m hoping for the Passing Game, for this Offense to evolve, Hall needs to be one of the focal points of the passing game. Wink’s defense will be a good gauge, on the real progress that Zach has made. Wilson can’t turn the ball over.
From previous posts. Many mention the Jets need for a second receiver to complement Wilson. Give Hall, Conklin and Ruckert more opportunities, Lazard, Gipson, Brownlee and Charles might step it up.
Hall definitely needs to be for the Jets what Cook was for the Vikings early in his career. He averaged over ten yds a reception last year.
The Chiefs, Ravens and were ever Hockenson has played has proven you can have a successful passing game throwing to your tight ends. Conklin has given a sample of his ability.
I have a funny feeling that at some point Irvin Charles is going to become at least a part of the offense. He’s already a very good blocker. He made a few plays during the 2022 preseason where he looked like the best player on the field. He’s a freakish athlete that was immature as a collegian but he’s worked so hard to improve at the little or unheralded things to make a place on this roster. How can any Jet fan not root for this kid. I’m hoping at some point he gets an opportunity to make a play on offense that maybe opens a door for a bigger roll.
Roster management on game day, likes to to have your Wide Receivers 4-6 play Special Teams. Charles “The Wolf” seems to be a dominant ST player. Kindly note, this is Justin Hardee’s last year of his contract. In Irv Charles you have a very RAW WR that is 6’4 219 pounds, a classic WCO WR, with speed , an a willingness to block, showing his physicality on ST. Consider , the difference of Mims a second round pick with all the same attributes, his career spiraling downward, versus Charles an overaged UNDFA, who is willing to work, and become dominant in ST, Special Teams is always a path. In the Historic 2022 draft, we drafted Sauce , Garrett, JJ , & Hall, with fourth round steals of Mitchell & Clemons. What May go unnoticed in that year is the UNDFA class of Tony Adams, Bam Knight and Irv Charles.
Hall needs 12-15 targets in the Passing Game , especially against a pressure defense. Conklin has shown route running, separation, good hands and a little YAC. Broken record time, move Lazard into the slot, create separation for him with a lot of motion. Creating better reads for Zac, and assisting the running game. Brownlee/ Charles on the outside , won’t get many targets but they will get an opportunity to develop in this offense, both are nice sized WCO receivers
I'm hoping for both! Breece has got some giddy-yap in him; imagine a play, where the slot motions to the other side first (see if the D is playing man or zone) then motioning Breece into the slot just vacated on the other side.
We could run this with a 22 package, Carter stays back by Wilson. Is Carter going to run the ball to the strong side? And who's going to cover Breece? a LBer? Good luck with that; Breece will eat his lunch. Bring down the Safety to cover Breece? Say HELLO! to GW jukin' the single cover CB and running a POST pattern to the area the Safety just vacated, or a Flag and catching up to the ball Zach puts where only he can get it.
Like I said, guys - Jets 31, Giants 3 - and I hope dem l'il boys in blue get a case of ED after this. Maybe then, the shark-tank media scrubs will stop printing heSaidsheSaid stories about has-been jints kickers runnin' their mouts, calling us the "JV" team; the "renters" at "their" stadium. Such fucking disrespect, such nastiness, pettiness, envy and Jealosy from this ass-plugs!!! These bozos are a far cry from the Parcells coached, Conklin coached teams.
So - to Hell with them. I hope our guys crush them.
Cook’s signing was an insurance policy in case Hall hadn’t come back from his injury.
I’m sure Cook signed here thinking he would be setting up behind
Rodgers in the backfield.
Two things happened that negates what was just mentioned.
Rodgers got hurt and Hall rushed for 109 yards on his first two carries against Buffalo.
Hall showed Cook what Cook was like his early years in the league.
Maybe the Jets envisioned what the Packers do/ did when Rodgers and Hackett were at Green Bay. Alternate Jones and Dillon, keeping both players fresh pounding the ball.
Unfortunately between Rodgers and offensive line injuries, it hasn’t happened.
Hall has shown the ability to still thrive, he is averaging 6.5 yards a carry, Cook in limited action hasn’t.
He is averaging 2.8 yards a carry
Cook averaged 8.1 yard a reception for the Vikings,
For the Jets he has averaged 5.1
Hall this season has averaged 8.7 yards per reception.
Barring an injury, just based on performance, since Cook really hasn’t shown much, his playing time is equal to what he gives.
David mentions that the Giants are giving up 137 yards a game rushing. Maybe the Jets could have one of those games when they rush for 175 yards giving Cook opportunities. Unfortunately that won’t happen every game against every opponent.
Presently the Cook signing is turning into the Hardman signing. The younger player is outplaying the veteran. Then you add, Carter and Abanikanda into the mix, all of a sudden it’s a very crowded running back room.
Ironically, the Vikings have started a run but are ranked 29th in team rushing. They did offer Cook a contract in the winter. It was for alot less than he wanted. Maybe they can become trade partners with the Jets.
Good GMs, winning GMs realize mistakes, admit them and try to correct them. Hopefully Douglas can get something for Cook and Lawson.
I know some Jet fans want to unleash the Anaconda🐍. Hopefully a Cook trade will accomplish that.
A clue who the Jets are trying to trade might be given on Sunday, when healthy scratches are given.
Great post as usual David. As far as Cook and Lawson go, I don't know who would willingly part with any draft assets for Cook. He couldn't get any takers in FA and the Jets signed him as an insurance policy for Breece. Since that hasn't been the case with Breece pretty much back to his pre-injury status,. he shouldn't expect to get a lot of snaps. And what snaps he has gotten haven't set the world on fire. He looks like he aged noticeably between the end of last season and right now. He's lucky the Jets signed him at all, they didn't really need him. And this "getting his legs under him" nonsense is just that, nonsense.
Lawson is a victim of that old bugaboo, the training camp injury. He hasn't shown the drive he had last year as of yet and seems to be struggling. The Jets could have cut him, but they wanted to keep him as a cog in the pass rush. Unfortunately, this has gone awry. A back injury, even a minor one, can linger for a long time and cause a myriad of issues. It's not a knock on Lawson, he's had a real bad run of luck.
I don't see any meaningful, "must do" deals in the offing. If they could get a real cheap deal for Hunter Renfrow that won't hurt the cap situation, go for it. Other than that, a big-name splash isn't going to happen. If AR was healthy and playing well, that would be a different story if you need a piece to get over the hump. But their real need is an interior OL above all else.
hey David!!!

Nice comment on MC2. Significant speed difference between Pinnock and Adams

BOTH !!!!😀😀. Putting Hall in motion gives us some exciting possibilities.
I feel pretty good about the jets this week (faous last words). With this blitz coming we shall see the so called "inprovements" in Zack Wilson.
