Good morning ☕
It’s been a pretty crazy couple of weeks for the Jets. So much has happened and so much has changed. After a slow start to free agency and a lot of grumbling within the fanbase (including from yours truly) Joe Douglas has arguably put together the best Jets roster in recent memory.
The big caveat is health, but like Steve said in the comments yesterday, at some point the law of averages surely dictates that the Jets will get a season of health. We have some injury updates on a couple of the new Jets and then it’s probably time we turn our attention to the draft.
John Simpson met with the media yesterday and he said he never felt wanted in Las Vegas and believed he blossomed in Baltimore. He’s also said he wants to bring the swag back to New York. His personality seems to fit with the bright lights.
Mike Williams confirmed that he had surgery on his ACL over 4 months ago and is confident he’ll be ready in plenty of time for week one. Using a standard recovery timeline, his week one status really shouldn’t be in danger.
He then explained what drew him to the Jets: "I just felt like it was a great fit for me. Aaron, I want to be able to play with him, pick his brain, learn from him, Playing alongside Garrett [Wilson], he kind of reminds me of Keenan [Allen] a little bit. Similar style play, great route runners, and I feel like we can complement each other in that area. The running game is pretty good. Defense is elite, so I just feel like we got a pretty good opportunity ahead of us."
Morgan Moses confirmed that he suffered a torn pectoral in week four of the 2023 season, but decided to play through it. He had surgery 6 weeks ago and will be ready for training camp. He also didn’t seem concerned about the injury and it’s a testament to his toughness that he played through a torn pec for the majority of the season.
Moses also said that he had no idea he was going to be traded and that he’d texted Derrick Henry on Tuesday welcoming him to Baltimore, only to be traded on Wednesday. Despite the shock of it, he said he was “truly happy” to be back in New York, and you got the impression he meant it.
Earlier this month Jets offensive line coach Keith Carter headed to Jordan Morgan’s pro day to work him out. If the Jets decide to trade back, then Jordan Morgan is definitely in play.
Remember the name Jontray Hunter from Georgia State, the Jets sent linebackers coach Mike Ruttenberg to his pro day to work him out.
West Florida WR John Jiles has also been drawing interest from the Jets according to multiple people close to that program.
However, the Jets were not in attendance at Spencer Rattler’s Pro Day. Rattler has been connected with the Jets as a late round developmental QB prospect, but the Jets didn’t send a single rep to watch him throw live, which is a little surprising.
They did however send 5 representatives to check out Bo Nix at his Pro Day.
Jets assistant offensive line coach Ben Wilkerson was at UConn pro day for Christian Haynes.
The Jets will be using one of their official visits on USC receiver Brendan Rice.
🟢⚪ At the start of the off-season, it seemed almost guaranteed that the Jets were going to take an offensive tackle with the #10 overall pick. I would estimate that 90% of mocks had them taking a tackle and 90% of the 90% had the Jets taking Taliese Fuaga from Oregon State.
That was before free agency.
