Well its been 4 days since the last lost and everything remains in place. Meaning if they were going to fire Hackett they would have. I think with different schemes the line wouldnt look this bad - would it ? I've come to the conclusion that - Rodgers or No Rogers / 4 wins total - The GM, Coach etc etc will all be back next year. I can blame Joe Namath all those years ago for making me a Jets fan - and i really hate rooting for this team !!!!

hey David!

Monday morning Mock Draft (again)!

www.profootballnetwork.com/mockdraft for the draft, and www.nfldraftbuzz.com for the player ratings --

this version, the Jets have the #8 pick (last week, it was the #11). I had a trade offer from the Texans, which I accepted:

Jets trade their #8 pick

Texans trade their #24, #48 (2nd round), #95 (3rd round), 2025 HOU 2nd and 2025 HOU 4th round picks. Heckuva haul, if you ask me.

The results:

> 24th 1stRd - Amarius Mims, OT Georgia

> 48th 2ndRd - Troy Franklin, WR Oregon

> 74th 3rdRd - Xavier Legette, WR South Carolina

> 95th 3rdRd - Carson Beck, QB Georgia

> 104th 4thRd - Tate Ratledge, OG Georgia

> 114th 4thRd - Mekhi Wingo, DT LSU

Franklin & Legette are legitimate, top 10 WR prospects - to get them in the 2nd and 3rd rounds? Shit man, sign me up for that! Carson Beck has really been coming through this year, especially with that great Bulldog OL - letting him sit, legitimately, behind Aaron Rodgers, but not as the #2, as the emergency #3 (Jets should still get a veteran #2, avoid a horror-show-repeat of the 2023 debacle). Imagine Garrett Wilson along with those two rookie wideouts for AR to slice'n'dice a defense with.

All in all, not too shabby!

On the potential changes at 1JD - next question I guess would be, who are the best/most viable GM & HC candidates out there that would consider coming to the Jets?

JD's record is subpar, and as you note, especially depressing given his street cred before he got here. I think also, the offensive line coaching merits a closer look - how has that been these past two, three years?

One thing I note, even with the limited camera view from the TV, is that good offensive lines seem to maintain their continuity/integrity at least 2-3 seconds after the snap. By those two descriptors, I mean that the line still "looks" like a line during that initial timeframe; the OL is more or less working together, staying roughly well gapped between them, their shoulders well aligned to the guys next to them, but not shearing off and exposing a two yard gap as the blockers go off in separate directions chasing after their marks. After those first couple seconds, even with an average or dare I say "normal" offensive line, you start seeing the pass rush pressure "shred" that integrity.

The Jets OL comes apart almost immediately after the snap. There is rarely a snapshot where the line maintains that continuity - and when I have seen it, I attribute it more to the DL running a vanilla pass rush in that given example. Once the Jets start facing unbalanced pass rushes to either side, stunts, blitzes, their integrity goes to shit. Mitchell and Becton both have severe problems with speed rushers; Becton especially, his legs are stiff, and when he tries to adjust to a rusher going around his left, his bending his torso over while stretching out his arms to block is disjointed, he has no strong base in his legs, he doesn't squat down and shuffle, instead leaning over from his almost upright legs while trying (and failing, miserably...) to generate power from his massive torso. Except that he gets no power that way; that can only come from a good, solid base - his legs - but he uses them so poorly that he is now a liability in pass protection. Elite, he is Not.

Which brings me back, again, to the coaching. And while i'm on that tack, as the Brits would say "in for a penny, in for a pound", I have to wonder if the staff is giving these guys some basic, but very effective training exercises designed to strengthen their legs, their connectives around the lower trunk. Things like Horse Stances; Lunges, Lateral Side Lunges. Squats are great for general body strength, for generating explosive, straight ahead force, but Becton and Mitchell need to improve their lateral strength and balance from a position closer to a squat, something that lowers their center of gravity and also allows them to strengthen that lateral movement. Because right now, both Becton and Mitchell can be seen consistently leaning over to their exposed sides, trying to use their torsos and extended arms to generate power - but their legs are lagging behind in the effort, disjointed, almost looking like they're about to reach the keeling-over point.

That last sentence tells me there's something amiss with the coaching technique. There are other factors, of course, but this one falls into the "Occam's Razor" category; the above suggested exercises can help with this issue, and the way I see Becton & Mitchell pass-protecting tells me these observations - and their weaknesses - are valid ones to make.

And yes, I'm just a mere fan, a wiener in a pile of beans, who am I to question the professional coaches? A fan, that's who I am... and who should I defer to? The coaches "cred"? Or what my eyes see on the tube?

Anyways, 'nuff a dat; I hope you TJW'ers find my mock draft intrigueing. I'll be back next Monday and by this time, the Jets will likely have the #7, maybe even the #6 pick to play with.

Regarding the offensive line coaching, I've wondered what the difference between this year and last year is. I, also, wonder about the communication.

What I notice with the tackles is that they pretty regularly abandon their technique, quickly turning their shoulders and attempting to "run by" the pass rusher. I can see that happening a few times a game during passing downs where it is obvious that the rusher is pinning their ears back, but the tackles, this year, have made an art of that. What connects Mekhi Becton and Max Mitchell is, actually, quite interesting. I got the impression that Max Mitchell still needed to add weight and improve his core strength. Becton, on the other hand, needed to lose weight while improving his core strength. It's strange, because they had similar body problems that required different solutions that do the same thing. Becton was a disgusting fat-body who got by on pure athleticism and never needed to be in shape. Max Mitchell, it seems, got by on quite a bit of athleticism and, as he's had to go against guys who are just as athletic and stronger, that lack of core strength is glaring. It's more understandable for Mitchell, I think. His first year was dedicated to learning the offense and I didn't expect him to have perfected his body during his rookie season. His first offseason was mired by blood clot issues. I'd expect him to make strides this offseason without those health issues. Becton, though, doesn't have many excuses. It's always been abundantly clear that he needed to lose weight.

I think you have really hit on something. I personally think that Becton will not be able to make the grade as far as the losing weight/gaining core strength idea. Mitchell is still salvageable at this point in his career. When a player Becton's size goes through what he has gone through injury-wise, and his obvious problems keeping his weight down, they might not be able to climb back up to where they may want to be. It's like he already has 5 years of wear and tear on his body and might not be able to become the player he thinks he already is. Anointing oneself to be "elite" when the hard facts show otherwise is also an issue. I think he's fooling himself, and badly.

I'd rather they pass on a guy like Mims. I may be snake-bitten, but enormous overweight tackles make me squirm.

I agree with you to a point. I'm no offensive genius, lol, but it seems the Jets have not been able to exploit the zone blocking schemes they've been trying since Leveon Bell was signed, even if they draft and/or sign players that supposedly fit that scheme. I don't think any other team in the NFL has the number of plays either stuffed in the backfield or just get a very minimal gain at best. Would a switch to a real power scheme be more efficacious given the issues they've had ? I understand about being very reticent about OT's like Becton, but haven't we seen other similarly built players succeed ? Becton might be an outlier or he may just not able to do what those other players can do.

Bibber, While I like the players you chose I’m not confident Mims would be available at puck 24 and Carson Beck will probably be back at Ga. next season as the 25 QB class is not nearly as strong as this years class. But even if he does declare he wouldn’t last into the 3rd round. I like the receivers you chose as well.

David, so I’m reading the Post today and there’s an article saying the Jets were happy with Carter Warrens play Friday? Did I miss something? Did he play well? Tough to tell with all the traffic in our backfield😂

Expand full comment

I mean I feel like that's one of those comments meant to just support a rookie. Maybe their expectations were so low that they were impressed that he managed to complete a game, I don't know. It's tough on Warren after missing so much time, but he wasn't good on Friday. He was pretty abysmal.

Yeah, that’s what I thought. Oh well.....🤔

I agree with you heartily. I read the same article and my first thought was "WTF". Warren looked more lost than anything else and got dominated. I know he was thrown into an unenviable situation, but he looked awful. Almost another Mitchell type of situation where he was injured when drafted and hasn't had the full benefit of TC and practices. But what was inexcusable to me was his just standing there when the Fail Mary was run back. Like I said in another comment, the Dolphins played every second of the game like it was the most important second in the game, and the Jets didn't. That comes back to coaching, which has been awful. A total lack of discipline.

I think as long as the whole Jet organization is like an airplane in a holding pattern over Rodgers- Hackett International Airport, there will be no major changes.

Based on the success of Rodgers, status quo will prevail, though I think some of the Lambeau Leapers, Turnstile Turner and starting quarterback Tim Boyle will be jettisoned. Cobb should see the writing on the wall and quietly retire, just as quietly as he has played.

Due to salary cap ramifications, Lazard is back next year. Maybe he will be afraid to drop the ball when Rodgers is throwing. Presently he is a starting wide receiver on the all time Jet free agent bust team with Neil O’Donnell as qb, Bell at running back and the biggest free agent bust in Jet history Trumaine Johnson at corner. I’m sure David and his loyal followers can add to the All Time Free Agent Bust team.

As long as Rodgers can get this team deep into the playoffs, if he can get the Jets into the Super Bowl and hopefully win it. JD and Saleh are safe

If the Jets don’t make the playoffs with Rodgers, then all bets are off.

In a nutshell what this all means, is that the fans are stuck with 7 more games which will add to the worst season in Jets history. You can’t honestly say you see 1 or 2 games that are locks. I think the worst indignation will be if this team loses to the Pats.

When Rodgers was acquired, the Jet organization, the NFL and the Jet fan base, the season couldn’t start fast enough. Her we are on 11/27 and this season couldn’t end fast enough.

Munch always has the answers in situations like this. And I don't mean Detective Munch from Homicide: Life on the Streets and SVU, lol. I mean gold old Edvard Munch.

Nice Bobber. But let's be realistic here, the Jets are not making the playoffs this season and all this talk about St. Rodgers coming back in December is just ridiculous. Pinning those hopes on Duane Brown, Becton and Schweitzer coming back for the Falcons is also ridiculous. They will be lucky to win one more game this season, and that win won't be against New England. They have Miami again, the Texans have a very good team with a QB who is playing lights out, the Falcons which is a tossup, a Cleveland team that is also very tough to move the ball against, and Washington, who the Jets should beat. Washington might be the only game they win from here on out. This season is done, period. Time to start figuring out what's going to happen next year.

You point out all the positives a new GM and coach would walk into but the reason we have all these positive’s is because of our current GM and coach.

Expand full comment

Rob, yes there are some positives but not enough! His overall body of work has resulted in one debacle followed by another! Not many GM’s could or should overcome picking a QB 2nd in a draft that failed so miserably. Taking Becton over Wirfes? Taking a DE with so many talented WR’s available. There’s just to much garbage on his resume! He’s possibly our best GM ever? But that bar is just too low to matter!

Expand full comment

I was begging for Wirfs(always take the one with a wrestling background). Agree with McDonald pick but we all knew we had to take a qb at pick number two. Who should he have taken instead of Zach? None of those QB’s have planned out.

best GM, at least in the past 23 years, this century? I go with Trader Mike, Mike Tannenbaum - and he also made mistakes that cost him the job here. He gave a contract extension to Santonio Holmes, let Braylon Edwards walk - shudda been the other way around. And then he got caught up in trying to fix things via free agency, leaving the team in Cap Hell.

Sad, really, and typical "only the Jets" stuff. Here I am, calling a given GM the best in recent memory... and acknowledging the shit storm he left behind.

Now, where itf did I put that bottle of Cuervo?
