Good morning!
We’ve talked about Lamar Jackson, we’ve talked about Aaron Rodgers and we’ve spoken about Derek Carr. Now it’s time to talk about Jimmy Garoppolo.
Yesterday I said I didn’t believe there wasn’t just a single avenue to success for the Jets, and I absolutely think that.
Could Jimmy G be the bridge option for the Jets? Or maybe even the long-term option? That’s the question we’ll explore today before we get into the Senior Bowl for the rest of the week.
💰 The NFL informed teams today that the 2023 salary cap will be a record $224.8, up from $208.2 million in 2022, $182.5M in 2021 (COVID adjustment), 198.2M in 2020, and $188.2M in 2019. It's right around the $225 million that most capologists were projecting. We'll get into how that impacts the Jets later this week, in short, it doesn't change a lot as we've been largely using a projection of $225 million over the course of the off-season so far.
❓❔ Here’s the referee's explanation for the extra play by the Chiefs "On the previous play, there was an incomplete pass," Torbert said. "We spotted the ball, but the line judge came in and re-spotted the ball because the spot was off. We reset the play clock, and the game clock started running. It should not have started running because there was an incomplete pass on the previous play." Had that happened to the Jets, I’d be furious.
🎰 According to Dov Kleiman (does anyone know who Kleiman is or which organization if any he’s associated with?), the Las Vegas Raiders have not given Carr permission to seek a trade as of the 30th of January. The reason they haven't done that is that under NFL regulations the day after the NFL Championship games is the first day a team can grant a player the option to seek a trade. So a story about, well, nothing.
🤠 ➡️ ⚡ Former Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore will be heading to Las Vegas to take over as the OC for the Chargers. Going from Dak Prescott to Justin Herbert is a nice way to make a living for an OC.
Jimmy G didn’t make any new friends in San Francisco on Sunday when he was seen laughing on the sideline as his team struggled through numerous QB injuries and found themselves in a hole against Philadelphia. I never like to make too much of this as you can never clarify the context, but it didn’t look great.
With Brock Purdy breaking through in San Francisco and Trey Lance still waiting in the wings, it’s likely that Jimmy will be playing his football elsewhere in 2023.
Let’s just point out three very obvious reasons for bringing Garoppolo in:
He’s going to be a free agent and will cost nothing in terms of draft pick compensation. That allows you to use the premium picks in the draft to solidify the offensive line.
Last year he signed a deal for just $7 million and it’s likely after an injury-plagued season, even a long-term contract will be reasonable in terms of cap cost. Will help the Jets sign help at other key positions.
He’s worked in the Shanahan WCO for 6-years now so he will have a good understanding of the concepts and reads. His adjustment period would (you’d think) be seamless with Nathaniel Hackett installing his version of the WCO.
Now let me point out the very obvious reason for not bringing him in:
