The most feared words in the NFL is INJURIES and IF. If the Jets can avoid any calamitous injuries, I think this weekend showed us what this coming season couldvbe like.
Yes, I know there is no pads, no hitting the qb, etc. but what it did show was the potential of the team as a whole and the potential of individual.
Yes, things change when the hitting starts, it will change with the preseason games and definitely things will be different on 9/11 against the Bills.
The biggest change will happen the week before the season starts and will continue all season. Opposing OCs and DCs WILL be losing sleep on how they will play the Jets. This hasn’t happened since #12 was roaming the sidelines and the Sack Exchange was wrecking havoc on opposing offensive lines and their quarterbacks.
Being an old time fan who remembers the Dorow Maynard connection, I have always felt that George Sauer never really got his due.
As noted in todays column, his name is never mentioned but to those of us who saw him play, he was a great player. He was overshadowed by Maynard but to those who saw him play, third and four, third and five, the ball was going to him. Probably ran the most perfect square out route of his time, he was unstoppable. He also has more lifetime Super Bowl receptions than any player mentioned in this article whether as a Jet or as a member of another team.
I took any Jet season of the receivers mentioned in this article in which they
had over 1,000 yds and divided it by games played. It gives you the average yards per game
Maynard, 5 seasons, 102.4, 97.4, 90.3, 87 and 74.3
I watched them all play also, and Sauer was an excellent receiver, in a Raymond Berry style of player, the classic split end, where Maynard was the classic flanker. Art Powell was sort of a combination of both because he was what we call now the prototypical wide receiver, 6'2"-6'3" and around 210-220 pounds with very good speed. Not Maynard speed, but very good. I would love to see Maynard in his prime in today's game. I think he would really flourish and was as tough as leather left out in the sun for 6 months. And I also give Sauer a LOT of credit for seeing what the NFL was really like vis a vis player treatment in general. And when he called it quits I had no issue at all with him. He was a class guy through and through. I guess today he would be comparable to Cooper Kupp. I also think Garrett Wilson is closer to Don Maynard than anyone in the NFL right now, though to me Maynard had better overall speed, with an extra gear when he needed it. I think overall in NFL history Maynard was in the top percentile of all receivers. He had something that a lot of players didn't have when you look at speed and toughness. I think a lot of AFL receivers got short shrift when it came to comparisons to the then-NFL. Lionel Taylor, Lance Alworth, Charlie Hennigan, Art Powell, Otis Taylor, Chris Burford, Fred Biletnikoff, Warren Wells and Cliff Branch were all true NFL quality players. And another thing is that the AFL brought the style of game that is played today.
Thank you David. Another good start to our week. My take on all things Jets today is on the amount of positive high energy vibes permeating the various Jets Facebook groups after the teams first 4 practice sessions. A stark contrast to the past 5 seasons where cautious optimism ruled the day. Being a fan since the teams inception means I’m older. Being older means I have pretty much seen everything. The good the bad and of course the bazaar! So while the positive vibe is great I can’t help but wonder what we might see if things do not go well early. The more you care and love something the harder it is to loose it. I guess I’m just hoping our fan base does not overreact to too much good or too much bad early results. The Aaron Rodgers Garrett Wilson combination looks like it’s gonna be amazing. I think it’s important for either Allen Lazard or Corey Davis to emerge as a solid number 2 option. Somebody is gonna have to make plays to keep teams from throwing the kitchen sink at G.Wilson. It’s been fun seeing guys like Brownlee and Ruckert making plays. Irwin Charles has gotta stop with the drops, he’s not helping himself doing that. Have a great day peoples....👍
I'm glad that MC II is finally starting to get some recognition. Over the weekend, I read that on the Echols pick 6 last year, it was due to MC II recognizing the formation and going up to Echols and telling him that the ball was coming in his direction.
Even though we've been conditioned over the years to not get too excited, I don't see how any true Jets fan can't help but be excited with the potential of this team. Of course it's early, but if we can avoid any more serious injuries, the Jets have the potential to have a very good year.
It was interesting reading about the QB-WR connections in Jets' history. I was a little surprised that Al Toon's name wasn't in there. I am also a big fan of George Sauer, Jr. He was awesome. It really hurt the offense when he walked away from the game. It was sad when he tried to come back years later in, I think, one of those other "professional" football leagues. He was a mere shadow of what he had been.
So Watching that great catch by Garrett Wilson in the back of the endzone reminded me of why I liked him so much on my pre draft scouting notes. I compared him to Paul Warfield. The former Cleveland Brown great. He had incredible body control. Could change direction in full stride and contort his body to what ever position required to get to the football. I love the fact he fully extends to the football and catches it with his hands! He was obviously well coached at Ohio St. which has become WR University these last 5 or so years. They will have another two number one picks coming out next April including Marvin Harrison Jr.

I wish Vinnie T played in 2022 - we would have made the playoffs LOL
Steve, yeah, that caught my mind too😂🤣 Having a new baby in the house makes everything a challenge. 🤣😂
LOL
Damn it! I'm blaming the baby and nearly three months of broken sleep...she's too young to take it personally lol
lol
Great article today, David!

Steve, of course. That’s what I meant when I said I caught that typo. Obviously he and Decker were long gone by then😂🤣😂

You are 1000% correct, he does compare favorably to Paul Warfield.
