Good morning!
Welcome to Friday, the weekend, the last weekend without NFL football until 2024. Now if that doesn’t get the blood pumping I don’t know what will.
Today we’re going to have a look at the unfamiliar names on the Jets practice squad, in other words, players who haven’t been with us through camp.
First I wanted to share my article for the Jets UK site, taking a look at some of the feel-good stories from the final 53.
2023 New York Jets Practice Squad
The Jets announced their practice squad yesterday, a lot of the names are very familiar, but there are some new ones to dig into
Xazavian Valladay - RB
We spoke about Valladay a little bit yesterday as he was one of the first names to be linked with the Jets from outside the organisation.
Valladay’s game is all about speed and acceleration and that showed in his pre-draft testing when he ran a 4.46-second 40-yard dash. That and his 10-foot-3 broad jump helped him post a Relative Athletic Score of 9.46.
He did start the pre-season with Houston but was waived and picked up by the Steelers, so it was always a tough ask to make the roster as a UDFA who only had 2 a handful of weeks with the team.
His pre-season was pretty uneventful with 16 carries for 38 yards (2.4 average) and 0 touchdowns. He did have one catch for 22 yards, which was his most explosive play.
Last year he rushed 215 times for 1,192 yards (5.5 YPC) and 16 touchdowns for Arizona State. He joined the Sun Devils from Wyoming, where he left as the second-leading rusher in program history.
He finished his college career with 840 attempts for 4,465 yards (5.3 YPC) and 35 touchdowns. He also had 150 missed tackles forced and 115 rushes of 10+ yards, so there is something there.
He did have some fumble issues in his last year in Wyoming, with 4 balls on the ground.
