Edition #1208: Do the Jets have legitimate interest in adding Terrion Arnold? Should they have interest?

You’d think with Geno Smith’s pending legal issues over allegations of battery, the Jets would be staying well clear of any controversial characters.

Late last week we found out that wasn’t the case.

According to Terrion Arnold’s agent Nicole Lynn, she had received calls from multiple teams about Arnold within 24 hours of the Lions releasing him.

The Jets were one of those teams. Alongside the Texans, who Arnold worked out for last week, the Seahawks and the Colts.

According to Lynn, Arnold will will work out for another team this week, although it wasn’t revealed who the mystery team were.

Terrion Arnold - The Player

A former first-round pick of the Detroit Lions in 2024, Arnold has enjoyed two decent if unspectacular years in the NFL.

Over the first two years of his professional career he’s allowed 59.7% of passes to be completed into his coverage (83-139) for 1,123 yards, 13.5 yards per reception, 6 touchdowns to 1 interception and 13 passes defenced.

Last season he was restricted to just 8 games played due to a shoulder injury that required surgery. Even before the legal incident, he was told that he was going to be competing for his starting place this season due to two underwhelming seasons as a first-round draft pick.

Arnold enjoyed two stellar years with Alabama and his 5 interception senior season catapulted him into the back-end of the first round (24th overall).

The scouting report on Arnold is of a fast and fluid player who excels in man coverage and plays with + competitiveness and an ability to create turnovers.

Obviously Arnold was drafted by the Lions while Aaron Glenn was head coach, so it shouldn’t be a huge surprise that the Jets are showing some level of interest. What we don’t know is how serious that interest is. Was the call a quick check-up on the situation, or is Mougey seriously considering adding Arnold to the cornerback room? We’ll probably find out pretty soon with Nicole Lynn projecting that Arnold will sign for a team within the next 45 days.

Terrion Arnold - The Legal Issue

Right now Arnold is currently out on a $1M bond with the judge stating that there was not enough evidence that Arnold was present during the alleged crimes to keep him in prison until the trial.

So while this is not proof of his innocence, it does allow him to work-out for NFL teams and sign a contract, which I imagine would have enough clauses to fill all the department stores in NY in December.

Just a reminder that Arnold is accused of orchestrating a kidnapping and interrogation of three men who he believed to have stolen over $250,000 worth of goods from the rental property that he was staying at.

The three victims were beaten for an hour at gunpoint where it is alleged that one of the defendants live streamed the beating to Arnold who was on his way to the apartment, something that Arnold’s lawyers have vehemently denied from the very start, first stating:

"there is no evidence in police reports, text messages, or witness statements that implicates Mr. Arnold in any way."

Then following this up with the below statement

“Terrion Arnold categorically denies any involvement in the matters underlying the allegations made against him and maintains his innocence.

“There is no credible evidence linking Mr. Arnold to these allegations. Instead, the government appears to be relying on testimony from multiple convicted felons who have admitted their own involvement and may have substantial incentives to shift blame in an effort to lessen their sentences.

“Mr. Arnold looks forward to his day in court and is confident that the judicial process will lead to his ultimate vindication.”

Needless to say it’s all just a little bit messy.

Terrion Arnold - Should the Jets be interested?

Absolutely not.

I know that it’s always innocent until proven guilty, but this is a headache that the Jets just don’t need to inherit.

I know that there is an appeal to adding a first-round pick for Cents on the dollar, especially when that first-round picker is a highly talented 23-year-old that happens to play a position where you’re weak.

But let me share a quote from Miguel de Cervantes’s Don Quixote:

“Tell me your company, and I will tell you what you are.”

His play thus far does not lead you to believe that this is risk worth taking.
