A head scratcher moment from the combine. Milroe refused to run the forty.
The following observation from X
“I don’t know why Jalen Milroe didn’t run the 40. If he clocked a low 4.4 (some even thought high 4.3s) his stock could’ve skyrocketed.”
He threw it well - showed off his cannon with solid accuracy. Footwork needs work, but that’s fixable.
Also from X concerning the combine,
Basically every OL measured a fourth to a half inch shorter with arm length/wingspan than they did at the Senior Bowl *and* Shrine. So factor that into your overall takeaways from body types and projections.
Jim Nagy said that this is the exact same crew from the Senior Bowl. How come we have such big differences?
Based on what Glenn and Mougey have said, sort of hard to believe that the Jets are trying to move up. Do they have the draft capital? Do they want to spend the draft capital? You’re not talking here about acquiring Manning or Luck. Minimum two-1s to start.
Also from X, YES, we all know about it department
From our Combine coverage: The #Jets are moving on from big-name WR Davante Adams, as they are taking calls on him, sources say. If no trade, they are expected to release him.
Last week, I posted that both James Pearce and Luther Burden III names were being removed from some team boards.
Gifted Jets Way veteran contributor Craig Collins asked me where I saw that because he hadn’t seen it or was aware.
Found this on Pearce
James Pearce Jr. may fall further than you could imagine
Everyone knows how athletic Tennessee EDGE James Pearce Jr. is. He came into the season as some analyst’s top prospect in the class from summer scouting. But his junior year in Knoxville did not go to plan in 2024.
I was told that the Tennessee football program could not only breathe easier once Pearce left campus but that his pitch count in SEC play was not injury related. Pearce was seen as undeniably uncoachable and as a player with one foot out the door already this season, giving his coaches little incentive to put him on the field full-time.
Pending the Mike Green reports that have flooded the media over the past month, I was told by one scout that Pearce Jr. is seen as the player with the worst character report of any player in this draft class.
Another scout told me they think the environment and people around him in Tennessee are the main issues, and they think he could become a pro when he enters an NFL building.
I was left with a final note that while the general public would be stunned to see it happen, NFL personnel won’t be shocked to see him on the board after the first 64 picks in the draft.
As far as Burden goes, still considered top 2-3 receiver.
But plays almost totally out of the slot, size a minor issue to play outside but is well known for not running out and finishing his routes when he is not the number one option. Gives little or no effort when he is the option 2 or 3. Has been an issue.
Bobber, Thanks for the nice compliment, but my gifts have to do with singing and music, not football. Thanks also for the answers to my questions about Pearce and Burden. Pearce had a great Combine. It will be interesting to see where he goes and when. Based on your comment about Mike Green, it sounds like he may have character issues as well.
As part of a discussion I was having with Jets fans at the other site, I looked up the NFL.com ratings and comments by Lance Zierline on all off the players in the PFF top 15 players in the draft. The top three were Ashton Jeanty, Abdul Carter and Travis Hunter. The number four? Tyler Warren. He has Jeanty a 7.15, Carter as a 7.0, Hunter a 6.89, and Warren a 6.77. All of the rest are 6.5 and lower.
Will Johnson 6.5 - a boom or bust prospect (too risky imo)
Mason Graham 6.49 - will become a good starter within 2 years (short arms
Luther Burden III 6.47 - will be a good starter within 2 years, (drops, takes plays off)
Mike Green 6.45 - will be a good starter within 2 years, (short arms, not ideal size)
Kelvin Banks Jr. 6.44 - will be a good starter within 2 years, (better at run blocking than pass protection, mentioned as possibly an OG)
Will Campbell 6.44 - will be a good starter within 2 years (a number of flaws, including short arms)
Tet McMillan 6.4 - will be a good starter within 2 years, (possession WR, can he beat press?)
James Pearce Jr. 6.4 - a good starter within 2 years, (tight hips, not great bend, character flaws)
Emeka Egbuka 6.37 - eventuall be a plus starter, (not elusive, lacks explosiveness)
Josh Simmons 6.34 - eventually a plus starter, (short arms, not ideal size)
Malaki Starks 6.34 - eventually a good starter, (suspect pursuit angles, average peripheral vision
About Warren he says 6.77 - year one starter, potential to become one of top TEs in NFL, elite character, his production and athleticism scores are higher than most of them (only one year of top production, a flash in pan?, 5th year player so a little older)
Granted, that's only one man's opinion of these players and PFF has them ranked differently, but I think Zierline is usually better than most in analyzing and ranking players. The posters on the other site were saying that there's no way the Jets should take Warren due to low positional value, they were saying that the Jets should take an OT, Edge or CB due to positional value.
If all things were equal, then I might agree, but they aren't equal. Afew hundredths of a point difference or even one to two tenths of a point difference isn't that much, but when you get to over three tenths of a point difference in ratings, then I think one needs to pay attention to that in terms of considering BPA. Seemingly neither Green nor Pearce have the ideal size that Glenn/Wilks want in their Edges, plus there are character issues and short arms. All three of the OTs have lower production scores and only Campbell has a higher athleticism score. Campbell and Simmons have short arms, Campbell has a lot of flaws, and Banks migh be better suited at OG. Of the OTs, I like Banks the best, and if I didn't take Warren, Banks would probably be the pick, unless Glenn/Wilks didn't have a problem with Green's smaller size and there are no major character issues.
One also has to consider scheme fit, character, which player might give the greatest impact to the team's play, which player's character might best help change the culture of the Jets, which player is likely to be the most productive/best player as a pro, and with the Jets wanting to win now, who might contribute the most in the first year or two. IMO Warren fits the bill in all of those.
I don't think the Jets have a chance at Carter or Hunter. I haven't paid any attention to Carter's character, but since he's thought to be the potential #1, I have to assume that there are no red flags there. The same goes for Hunter.
We all know that the RB position has been devalued, but it seemingly is becoming more important. I like Breece, and have been against trading him, but imo a real case can be made for trading Breece if they can get a 2nd or 3rd round pick and change and then taking Jeanty. He's a real weapon, and hasn't had a major injury like Breece (AFAIK). He did have a heavy workload this past season, and Zierline says he has somewhat tight hips, and can become fumble prone. He also only played 3 years in college and didn't have anywhere near the workload in college that Breece had.
So imo, I think the strongest case can be made for taking Warren at #7 or following a small trade down. Thoughts?
Yep, that's another big point in Warren's favor (his versatility). He also does well with the trick/gadget plays, which makes it more fun for the players and fans and can turn momentum.
Trading Breece and drafting Jeanty, probably wouldn't be popular in the lockerroom. I'm not sure about the fanbase. As usual, it would probably be very mixed. If the Jets are drafting solely on BPA (which I hope that they aren't) Jeanty would be the pick at #7 if he's there.
Thanks, David. I have watched a lot of Milroe. The kid can take over a game and is extremely talented but he disappeared a lot when it mattered most - that is my concern about him - he panicked under pressure. Dart looked great as did Howard. I did not see Riley. Ewers did end up throwing btw. Looked ok.
His stats also indicate that his coaches schemed him up to take a lot of shots down the field. His average depth of target is over 11 yards, so he was really pushing the ball down the field. He also had the highest PFF grade on passes of 40 yards or more.
There are a couple of things this can indicate. One is that the Alabama staff knew his weaknesses (shorter, safer, passes that involved mid-range reads) and therefore played to his strengths (deeper passes with, possibly, fewer reads). Another is that game script could have factored into those higher deep ball statistics. If Alabama is behind, it's possible that they're going deep more often. One more thought is that it is possible that his running ability paired better with play action and taking shots. It's probably a combination of all of that.
Milroe seems like he'd be a fun kid to have on the team. He's built like a tank and seems to have some serious juice on the ground. That'd be exciting. He's relatively inexperienced, I suppose. He's playing the best non-NFL talent in football, so there's something to the competition. It's probably worth noting that he was running a brand new offense under a completely new staff last year. That's, technically, a positive because he and the rest of that Alabama team had to deal with adversity that previous Saban-helmed Tide teams didn't experience. Comparing those offenses might be apples and oranges.
You certainly hope that the Jets being mentioned as potential trade-up candidates is simply the front office plotting out all of the potential trade scenarious that might allow them to move around the board. I'd still love to see them move down and take Egbuka. I saw a report on him commenting about his relationship with Garrett Wilson. Apparently, they're very close friends and would love to play together again. I, already, think he'd be an awesome compliment. It's a total pipe dream because he falls in a part of the draft that the Jets likely won't take part in (late first round), but one can hope.
Funny thing is running is clearly his best asset! There are reports that some teams have asked him he would be willing to workout as a RB. I think wherever he ends up ( hopefully not here) he will be used as a wildcat QB. You make some good points and operating a new system certainly provides a good amount of difficulty so it’s odd nobody’s brought up at this point!
Excellent point about the CS and scheme change at Alabama prior to this past season, Daniel. Thanks! I wondered about that and if that accounted for Milroe's decline this past season. It seemingly does.
I like Egbuka a lot too. I'd rather take Warren, but would rather trade down and take Egbuka than any of the CBs, DTs, OTs, or Edges. It would be a plus that Wilson and he are good friends.
I'm not sure why you think Egbuka won't get drafted until the end of the 1st round. PFF has him rated as the #14 player in the draft, right after Warren. He's definitely one of the top 3-4 WRs in this draft imo. Maybe since other teams have been loading up on offensive players and playmakers while the Jets have been drafting defensive players (until JD changed that somewhat), maybe the other teams will focus on D and leave the best offensive players for the Jets this year. If that's the case, hopefully the Jets would take the offensive players and not reach or trade up for defensive players.
He may be getting mocked that low. It's really crazy how widely divergent views are on some players in mock drafts and on some of the different scouting/analysis sites. Jeremiah has him ranked as the 23rd best player. CBS has him at #28. As you know, I normally don't put much credence in what PFF says, so they may be totally wrong having Egbuka rated that high. Who knows? Just looking at those 3 lists, CBS and Jeremiah are widely divergent from PFF. Draft Buzz has Warren down at #16 and Egbuka at #24. ESPN has Warren at #4 and Egbuka way down at #50!!!! Drafttek has Warren at #11 and Egbuka at #14. The Draft Network has Warren at #13 and Egbuka at #27. The NFL Mock Draft Database has Warren at #10 and Egbuka at #26. Fox Sports has Warren at #3 and Egbuka at #29. So it sounds like you're right, that he may well not go until the end of the 1st round.
It's really bizarre scanning those lists. Some of them have Jalon Walker and Walter Nolen as top ten picks and others have them as 2nd round picks. On most Nic Scourton was well down the list of prospects, but one of them had him at #10.
Bobber, first of all who is X? I know that’s the new name for Twitter but I have no idea who came up with that opinion on Millie throwing accurately? From what I saw he was not good! “Our lads said “ he had the most passes of the group that were not completed and that was against air” “And a lot of his misses were by a lot”. And that was my take as well. It’s tough to really take a lot out of the passing drills because they are against air and there is no coverage. There is no decision making as the routes are all scripted so really what you get is a couple of guys having a pre game catch.
Really those throwing drills are silly. No rush, no coverage so it’s like going to a driving range instead of the golf course! Two very different activities
I didn't watch any of the Combine, but I did see where the NFL had posted video of a number of passes by the different QBs and their comments were totally off base. There were no names listed, just "NFL" who had posted the videos and comments on the throws. There was a comment where the QB supposedly put the ball in the receivers hands, and it was way wide and the player may have been out of bounds by the time he controlled the ball. Another was a deep throw that was labled a "beautiful" or "great" deep throw, and the receiver had to slow way down to catch the ball. So based on your comment, I think the NFL was hyping them up, and their comments were not accurate at all.
I think the main argument for not running at the combine is that it gives the player more time to prepare and run in a much more controlled environment (at their Pro Day). It's smart, I suppose. There are other guys, however, who simply don't want to give teams a chance to mark anything against them. That's sort of what Marvin Harrison Jr. did last year. I don't think that this is the same situation, with Milroe.
New Big Wigs @ NYJ's know the credibility motions; however, It's asking too much for these guys to have comprehension of the NYJ's context….or even, if they should consider the context.
According to the most accurate mock draft experts, the Jets are most likely to draft Tyler Warren. the 2nd choice was Will Campbell and the third was Kenneth Grant.
Based on what you've said here, I probably wouldn't draft him at all. The clincher for me were the stats you showed comparing him with other FBS QBs. With all the talent he had around him at Alabama, his stats should have been MUCH better. I also don't like that with the exception of his rushing TDs, his play was worse this past season than in 2023. Unless there were mitigating circumstances like a coaching change or a lot of Alabama's best players leaving following the 2023 season, his play should have been better, not worse. The Jets have already drafted one QB who regressed his last season in college and showed that he had bad fundamentals (Darnold). I hope that this regime won't repeat that mistake.
Talent-wise and the fact that he played at Alabama will cause some team that is desperate for a QB will undoubtedly overdraft him. I hope it isn't the Jets. I wouldn't draft him before the 3rd or 4th round, but he undoubtedly will get drafted in the 2nd round, and maybe the 1st. There's no way on God's green earth that I'd take him at #7, and even though he may be a 1st round talent, he doesn't have 1st round production.
We've all seen how poor fundamentals and an inability to quickly go through his progressions can prevent a QB with a lot of arm talent from succeeding or doing much of anything in the NFL (Wilson). As you point out, what's his processing ability like? All the arm and running talent in the world won't help that much if he can't read the field and make good, quick decisions.
We also don't know that abilities of the offensive staff to develop a young QB. If they do take him, they'd better have a darn good plan for developing him, and he should sit at a minimum for one year, and more likely two. Who is going to start in the meantime? If they can sign Fields to a 2-3 year deal, great. The offense should be able to stay the same for either QB, and hopefully Engstrand would devise it around both QBs to highlight their strengths and hide their weaknesses.
I will say that he is tempting with his excellent running ability and his strong arm, and they may not be in position next year to draft more of a can't miss QB prospect, but the Jets cannot afford to miss on a QB. At this point, if the Jets are committed to drafting a QB this year, I'd much rather they roll the dice on Jaxson Dart than Milroe. I wouldn't hate drafting Dart in the 1st round, but I would truly hate and fear drafting Milroe anywhere near that early.
A head scratcher moment from the combine. Milroe refused to run the forty.

Warren basically gives u three positions in one tight end, could be in slot and blocker, help the line
When Detroit took Gibbs at 12, wouldn’t call it a reach but most know it alls didn’t have Detroit taking him there.
Ironically some predraft talk had the Jets taking Gibbs at 15.
That’s with Hall on the roster, granted coming off of ACL.
Actually if you think about it, the wild card here is Glenn with his scouting experience, what does he envision for his team
Some say Jeanty second coming of Ladanian Tomlinson.
Trade Hall, draft Jeanty.
Remember it’s the Jets

X is the new name of twitter.
What interested me was that he didn’t run
Maybe it was his agent or an Alabama alum who put up about his accuracy.
Not a big fan of quarterbacks throwing against no defense or pass rush, so I didn’t watch or really don’t have a clue who did good or bad.
As I said, I understand that @ twitter is now X! What I wanted to know is who on X made that comment?
See my comment above. I'm certain those comments were shared on the other site where I read and post and they were from X.
Milrow is a hard pass for me as is Fields. I’m ok with Taylor as bridge and either Dart or McCord if they can get one of them.
How upset are you going to be when the Jets sign Justin Fields and then draft Milroe at the top of the 2nd round? lol
I will kiss the ground i walk on that i did not renew my seats LOL
😂
New Big Wigs @ NYJ's know the credibility motions; however, It's asking too much for these guys to have comprehension of the NYJ's context….or even, if they should consider the context.
According to the most accurate mock draft experts, the Jets are most likely to draft Tyler Warren. the 2nd choice was Will Campbell and the third was Kenneth Grant.

Great reveiw of Milroe, David!! Thanks!
Read my comment. It notes the coaching change.
