Tony Dews is the new running back Coach, spent four years with the Titans as RB Coach, and an additional year as the TE Coach. In that time , Derrick Henry the ultimate Power Back had his best years under Dews. Coaching a premier back, could have advantages for both Hall & Allen. Hall is a different back than Henry , but they are both center pieces to their Offenses, and Defenses gear to stop them. Dews may find the best way to utilize Breece, keep him Healthy and motivated. Allen is only 20, currently not a complete back, yet, but what a ceiling. Dews has coached power RB’s before , knows what they can do in this league, and more importantly for Allen what they can’t. Dews is one Coach with monumental challenges with Hall & Allen, but also finding roles for Izzy (Resurrection ) and Davis. His success could be one reason that the Jets roll this season.

Expand full comment

Why do you think it will be a monumental challenge for Dews? I would think it would be almost a dream come true for Dews to get to work with 4 RBs with the talents and different skills of Hall, Abanikanda, Allen and Davis, especially with such potentially a good OL in front of them. They can make Dews look even better than he is. They could make his job very easy. All he has to do is not screw it up.

Expand full comment

Maybe. But Dews has to overcome Hackett, Downing & Running Game Coordinator Kieth Carter, battling those knuckleheads everyday. Managing Hall is tricky , Breece will demand 30 carries a game but you need to get him through a rugged 17 game schedule and the playoffs . Allen is a 20 year old rookie, that needs coaching and work on ball security. Izzy needs to get a whole lot better, and the need to find a productive role for him you’ve got speed use it. Davis could find his role on ST, he is a more complete back than Allen without the ceiling. Davis will be the next Bilal Powell but with more power

Excellent analysis. With 4 RBs, one of which is one of the top 3 in the league, what role do the there three play. Certainly limiting Breece from being overworked but how do you get value from the other three. Allen is a beast and seems like a good short yardage back and a banger inside! Also, Corley could get lots of short passes that let him do his yac thing. Just not sure where the other two will fit

Will the team get a Meaningful return from where they were drafted!. I would like to see what Abanikanda can do as a change of pace back with speed. I don’t think any plays were designed to take advantage of these assets. Then again Kant Hackett is not particularly adept at designing plays to take advantage of player’s unique skills, in this case speed!

The biggest challenge for Dews may be in restraining himself from going after Hackett and/or Carter on a daily basis. I hope that he meditates or has low blood pressure, because it's probably going to get escalated with the Jets.

Expand full comment

LOL. Carter seems nasty as well as incompetent, but Dews worked with him at Tennessee. Jets endorsed corruption when they kept the senior Staff in Hackett, Downing & Carter. Latest stories on Hackett indicate that Senior Management was well aware of this , and tried to insulate Hackett. There will be conflict, Shawn Jefferson a 20 year veteran WR Coach will do battle with Downing in an attempt to to restore the WR Corp. Shawn has similar challenges that Dews does. Get Wilson through a 17 game season, healthy. Develop Corely quickly. Resurrect Lazard, Get something out of a Brownlee or Charles

Excellent point regarding having to deal with and overcome Hackett, Downing, Carter (and Saleh)!!!!! I hadn't thought of that. Breece could be difficult as well. He had a TON of carries in college. Hopefully, he's smart enough to realize that if he wants to get a 2nd contract and potentially a BIG contract in the NFL, he's going to need to slow down on the some of the pounding and carries he gets. Allen does need work on ball security, but that's something I've read that's pretty easy to fix. If he can block, I think it makes some sense to make Davis the FB.

In what ways other than pass blocking does Izzy need to get better? As you said, he has speed and they need to use it. How difficult can it be to get him some carries? How is Davis a more complete back than Allen?

Expand full comment

Hi CC. How about some sweeps or put him in motion for a short reception and put pressure on the CB. Can he catch anything? I hope so cause if he can, he may have some untapped value

Expand full comment

It's pretty likely that Davis hasn't done anything resembling the kind of lead blocking that fullbacks usually do since high school. Asking a guy to learn to play an entirely different position is a big ask. It's probably more likely a guy like Yeboah gets those 5 reps a game "playing fullback" rather than asking one of their running backs to do it. Tight ends are closer to fullbacks than running backs.

Expand full comment

To your point, Davis at 215, Kenny at 250

Expand full comment

I'm not sure if he was suggesting this, but I think it could, conceivably, be more challenging with so few veterans. That'd potentially be a more rewarding experience for a coach, but it definitely requires a bit more effort. The argument could be made, however, that the young guys would be easier to mold than veterans. Vets can be more set in their ways and less open to making changes. I suppose it could be either way.

I watched most of the games Allen played because I know Chez Mellusi quite well and Chez was the second half of the 1 - 2 punch with Allen. This kid would have been the best back in the country if he stayed for his senior year. His leaving is a big surprise to me. Still so young but he can do everything. Absolutely a feature back potential. Will be scary with he and Breece. Crown JD now as King of every other draft. Can’t believe he got this kid when he did.

Expand full comment

Dougie, I’m not ready to crown JD as the king of the every other draft? Really, he’s aced one’d draft and that didn’t exactly take a genius. Two top ten picks should produce good results. His first draft was a disaster, his 2nd draft was “eh, and his 3rd was his shinning moment. This draft has as many questions as answers. The only player in this draft I see as a sure starter ( eventually) is Olu! The WR is really not a WR. For now he’s a gadget guy. We have no idea if he can run routes, block or catch the football. His drop rate was not great. As for Allen running over NFL defenders will be more challenging than college boys. As for the rest of this years class; who knows🤔 And two RB’s? Really🤔😂🤣

Expand full comment

Ron, I totally disagree with you that Corley is not a WR. He isn't just a "gadget" player. Corley will start and will be a significant part of the Jets' offense, just as Deebo Samuel is a significant part of the Niners' offense. His drop rate was not great, but I think he will improve on that stat. Slot WRs usually aren't called on to block, so that a non-issue imo. He is already working on his route running. He wants to show that he can play outside.

Expand full comment

Craig, we’ll see! I hope your right. I can only go by what I’ve seen on videos. His route tree at present is limited to crossing routes and screens. Not heard but the Jets want to play GW in the slot so I’m wondering how that will effect Corley. The blocking is important in our offense so you can’t minimize it!

Expand full comment

Yes, we will see, and I hope that I'm right too! I'm excited about him. Corley, M. Williams, Fashanu, T. Smith, Moses, and Allen are the only reasons I have any hope or optimism for this season, so I may be going overboard on Corley.

Yes, his route tree is limited because that's all that WKU used him on. Have you seen pictures of him when he went to WKU as a freshman compared to where he is now and read stories about how hard he works to learn and get better? He was so determined, that when he was in the 7th grade he told the high school football coach that he was going to play in the NFL, and then he worked his ass off to get here. He will be a work in progress for a while.

Since they wanted Corley, I have to assume that G. Wilson's appearance in the slot will be limited if not the Jets attitude about playing him in the slot totally changed. Hopefully, the Jets aren't so stupid that they won't Corley if his blocking isn't up to par. They need to get their best players on the field, and with Rodgers wanting Corley, Corley should make it to the field. The Jets' OL will block much better this season both in pass protection and the run game, plus I know that Allen is a good blocker in pass protection, so he may be a good blocker in space downfield, and Davis may be a good blocker too. I think that will lessen the need for the Jets WRs to be great blockers. They'll still use them to be certain and will want Corley to work on his blocking, but he should get his opportunities on the field, not only because of the unique dimension he brings, but also because of M. Williams' questionable health and Lazard's poor play.

Expand full comment

They, actually, are expected to block. I suppose there are some times when they're running actions with the receivers that are disconnected from the run play (such as the backside or playside receivers running a smoke/bubble concept with one guy blocking and the other running the route). They won't necessarily do that all of the time, though.

The truth about Corley is probably somewhere in the middle. He has a lot of work to do to become more complete player. We, as fans, honestly have no idea how he'll be able to handle picking up a more advanced playbook and doing a lot of stuff at the position that he never did in college. It sounds like they love his mental makeup, so that's probably worth something.

Expand full comment

Yes, I misspoke earlier. Pretty much everyone on offense except the QB is expected to be able to block, but the slot CB doesn't block to the same extent that the OL, TEs and RBs do. As you said, they're running routes and acting as decoys on some plays, or may not even be on the field.

Getting the best players on the field. Two back sets. Breece in motion all the time, primary pass receiver, Allen threat between the Tackles

Expand full comment

I agree with the two-back sets, but disagree with Breece in motion all the time and just being used primarily as a receiver. If nothing else, that would be too predictable and easy for opposing Ds to defend. IMO they could use any two of the Jets RBs (assuming that Bawden is no longer on the roster and Izzy is ) in a two-back set effectively.

Expand full comment

Allen as a lead blocker for Hall ?

Expand full comment

Nah; I can't see them wasting Allen's finite number of hits he can take in his career on trying to lead-block like an old-school fullback. Honestly, it's more likely they try (but probably fail) to excise Bawden and fullbacks from the offense. I wish they would, already.

Expand full comment

The problem could be getting any type of rep that Allen can get. FB play 5-8 plays a game ? Replace Bawden, in favor of a TE , Rucker, Yeboah, or how crazy this, Zack Kuntz.

Expand full comment

Or, just don't use fullbacks. A majority of teams don't even use one. Same goes for the college game. There are plenty of other ways to get the numerical advantage from a blocking perspective. There are plenty of ways to get multiple backs on the field at once. Usually, you're using that threat of another back as a distraction for the defense. It's, sort of, a replacement player for whoever is in the slot or whoever is at TE. They can get VERY multiple and hard to defend if they get creative with personnel groupings and what they run out of them. Having non-traditional slots is, also, a pretty good idea. I hope they add more of that.

Expand full comment

That could happen. I've also seen a number of Jets fans on other sites saying that they think Davis could become the Jets FB.

So let me get this staright: In a passing league where the rules overwhelmingly favor the WRs - the Jets are loading up on running backs ? This is on top of a HIF QB who can sling the ball pretty accuretly. You want to say "well he can throw to the RBs" - how many do they really need ?

Expand full comment

Great question Steve. Gotta tell ya that 2nd RB ( Davis) was a real scratcher for me. Christian Mahogany the Guard from BC was there and would have been an ideal backup in case AVT had another injury. Oh well….

EXACTY Ron - i know most of it is a crap shoot - but we just don't understand thier board ? I guess LOL

It’s quite possible that the Jets are getting ready for November- December- January Ground and Pound.

Let Rodgers get them there in September and October by throwing the ball more than rushing it.

Then eliminate the winds of East Rutherford from becoming a factor in their games.

Plus Rodgers becomes more dangerous when the D is getting pounded on running plays.

I agree Mahogany would have been a better pick but we don’t know what the Jets draft board said.

Also, Breece 220 pounds

Allen. 235. “

Davis. 220 “

Abakan 215 “

No lightweights there

Expand full comment

i agree we need those type players - but again in a passing league not that many. Josh Allen has no probalem passing in worse conditions then Metlife - im still not buying getting all these backs.

Expand full comment

The only possible kink in that plan, Bobber, is that by some point in November/December, T. Smith could be down with injury and Fashanu playing LT. He's much better in pass protection than he is in run blocking. He would either have to improve markedly, the Jets have to run up the gut and/or to the right, or they'd have to pass more rather than less.

I agree with all of you guys on Mahogany, but the Jets may have correctly figured that he would last until the 6th round, and the Jets traded away their 6th round pick and the 6th round pick or picks they acquired during the draft. The Lions certainly jumped on Mahogany, and they have one of the best OLs in the NFL.

The trade down with GB was a killer and made no sense. If nothing else, JD could have used that 6th round pick to draft Mahogany, but I think he used it to trade up and take Travis. That's where I think JD over thinks things and tries to get too cute in the draft. I understand that value is important, but it is MORE important to get the players that one needs/that can help the team succeed, and worry less about perceived "value." JD should have either used that earlier 4th round pick on Allen, or should have received a 5th round pick from GB in for trading down 15 spots.

Based on his own comments, I think JD falls in love with players or focuses exclusively on BPA and then forgets about need. For instance, he tried ot trade up for Odunze. If he had succeeded, we wouldn't have Fashanu, and probably would have had to give up the 3rd round pick as well as one or both of the 4th round picks or an early pick next year, so we wouldn't have any depth at OT and would be going into next season needing two starting OTs. IMO he just doesn't make sound decisions and needs to go regardless of what happens this season.

I was a fan of the Allen pick as I think he offered tremendous value at that pick and he's a good complement to Breece. Those two are going to be an issue.

I didn't really understand the Davis pick because I didn't think he was head and shoulders above the other players at bigger positions of need. I'd have preferred a WR/OG/OC player there, but here we are.

Expand full comment

I would have loved a WR there, but the problem was that by that point, every one of the better WR prospects left (except for Brenden Rice) was a slot WR, so there was no point in taking another slot WR. IOL was still a big need imo and that definitely should have been where that pick went. Davis is a good prospect, but it was a luxury pick.

I hope that I'm wrong, but unless JD signs a camp cut at IOL, the depth at IOL could become an issue that has a negative effect on this season.

Expand full comment

I agree and wanted mahogany esp after McCormack got grabbed a round early by Steelers. However, at that point in draft you are really drafting the BPA according to your philosophy. Davis is insurance / competition for Allen. Supposedly he is going to be a STS ace and 5th rd is a great place for that. 🤷🏾‍♂️. I hear mahogany had some medical flags and that’s why he dropped, but I woulda grabbed him or someone OL.

However, I trust JD and the scouts when you are in lower rounds who the hell knows. They think Davis is the best available player regardless of position at that point. We will see.

Well said. It makes you wonder how much they had to have loved Davis, considering they'd already invested a 4th in Allen and 3rd (and the required ammunition to move up) in Corley. They must really love Davis.

David, like you said, we are heading into the doldrum days in the NFL year.

So a few questions about your stadium quandary.

In regards to where you live, how far is each stadium, distance wise.

In currency exchange, are NFL tickets as expensive as in the states.

Do NFL tickets, soccer tickets, Rugby tickets get subjected to ticket shylocks like stubhub, ticketmasters etc.

Can you get a beer 🍺 at the stadium and if yes, for how much

Is tailgating a tradition there.

I saw one depth chart that had Allen as running back #2 and Bawden as #1 fullback, would Allen be able to play fullback, does anybody think Bawden days are numbered. It would appear that either Bawden or Abanikanda will be the sacrificial lamb on cutdown day in September. Can’t see the Jets carrying 5.

A lot of chatter before the draft, that the Jets might have to sign another wide receiver once their OTAs and mini camp are over.

Since the draft, Chalk, Gallup, Beckham, Robinson, Miller, Claypool and Boyd have been signed by other clubs.

Sorry if I missed anyone.

The illustrious list of free agent wide receivers still available are

Michael Thomas

Hunter Renfrow

Zay Jones

Mecole Hardman

Marquez Valdes-Scantling

Corey Davis

Julio Jones

Russell Gage

Alex Erickson

Lynn Bowden

Randall Cobb

Sterling Shepard

Hey Bobber. I'm just outside Norwich and the stadium is probably a 90-120 minute train away from there I live depending on the time/day/line. We tend to drive to the outskirts of London where it's easier to park and then get a train in to Tottenham's stadium. Wembley is a little more difficult to get to for me but not much. The problem is that I;m guaranteed tickets at Tottenham as we've got "season tickets" for the NFL there, but I don't have the same at Wembley as I don't got to all the NFL games when they're in London.

Tickets are certainly more expensive than when it first came over, but we pay between £80-£120 per game, which I think is probably cheaper than what you guys are asked to fork out.

For the bigger events that sell out, then they do go onto re-sell sites that cost an arm and a leg. NFL games always have ticket touts outside the stadium trying to sell people tickets above face value.

You certainly can get a beer at the stadium but it's horribly overpriced. I can't remember how much it is, but I think it's around £8 on NFL days, which is just over $10. At Norwich games I can get a pint for around £3.50-£4.50.

We don't have tailgating for football, but there is an increasing trend of having food trucks pull up outside stadiums. But fans don't tend to tailgate even at NFL games. Tradition here is more to go to a pub and get a few drinks before heading to the stadium 15-20 minutes before kickoff. At least that's always been my tradition and all my friends.

Thanks for the info on FA signings and who is still available at WR. I don't see the Jets signing a WR. They really don't have the cap space. If they do, I think it would probably be Scantling since Rodgers and he have played together. IMO they need to sign an IOL, or DT or S before they need to add another WR.

IMO Bawden's days should be numbered. Unless there is something wrong with Izzy that's never been reported, he should be on the roster. He is the fastest RB we have and he adds a dimension to the our RB corps that we don't have. Bawden adds nothing. IMO he's been a wasted roster spot since the Jets added him. I've seen a number of Jets fans mention Davis as a possible FB for the Jets. That makes more sense to me than keeping Bawden.

I'm with you on Bawden, but it's tied far more to the fact that using a fullback is nearly obsolete. They aren't moving any of these running backs to fullback. Completely different positions. Bawden should probably be talked about more with the TE dudes than with the running backs. He's closer in usage to the TE group.

Great stuff today, in a slow time, David! Thanks.

I love the tidbits of info you find and share with us. I also love the commentary on Allen.

Unless there's something about Abanikanda like work ethic that the Jets have decided they don't like, I think they'd be foolish to not give him an opportunity. He has HR speed that none of the others have, even Breece, so he brings something different to their RB corps. Depending upon their opponent, the Jets could mix and match their RBs for game situations. For instance they could wear down opposing offenses with Breece and Allen or Breece and Davis in the first 3 quarters, then in the 4th qtr. bring in Abanikanda when the D is tired, and with one handoff, he could go the distance and put the game out of reach, or he could rip off several long runs in a long, time-consuming drive. IMO Bawden has been a waste of a roster spot for as long as he has been on the team. They haven't used him all that much as either a runner or receiver or even as a blocker, and in fact, he spend part of last season on the PS. IMO it's no-brainer to jettison him and keep Hall, Abanikanda, Allen and Davis (That sounds like a law firm LOL).

I think whomever made that draft for PFN either doesn't know much about the Jets or was high when he wrote it. TE could wind up being a priority for the Jets in next year's draft, but I would think that RT, WR, DT, and maybe even S would take precedence over TE, unless JD just foolishly ignores need and focuses only on BPA, and that's if JD is even still the Jets' GM. IMO for them to take a TE in the 1st round, Conklin would have to leave in FA, Ruckert prove to be a bust this season, and Yeboah and Kuntz prove to not be any help at TE. Unless Carter Warren develops in a big way this season such that he is named the starting RT for next season, then RT should be the #1 priority, perhaps followed closely by WR or DT if Kinlaw doesn't pan out.

I love Allen's potential! Corley, Allen, Abanikanda, and the Jets' OL are what gives me the most hope and excitement for the upcoming season.
