Good morning.
I wasn’t expecting Joe Douglas to make a splash move yesterday considering the draft capital already invested in Aaron Rodgers, but I was expecting a couple of minor moves to improve the offence. No such luck, at least on the trade market.
We’re going to get through what happened yesterday and what that means for the Jets going forward. There were a couple of eye-catching moves, but the NFL deadline still lags behind the likes of the NBA and MLB in terms of excitement.
Hunter Renfrow and Devante Adams are still Las Vegas Raiders despite a lot of speculation. However, head coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler were both let go, which was slightly surprising. McDaniels still has 4 years left on his deal which Vegas will need to pay.
Chase Young is heading to San Francisco, and that defence just got a lot better. The 49ers gave up a 3rd-round pick to get Young, who will now line up opposite Nick Bosa. Young already has 38 pressures and 5 sacks and now he moves to a loaded defence, I love that move for San Francisco.
The Bills got a replacement for Tre’Davious White in Rasul Douglas. They gave up a third and got a 5th and Douglas back in return, and I’d say for a team looking to make a championship run, that’s a good deal for Buffalo. Douglas is a good but not great player, but he certainly improves their secondary.
The Browns traded Donovan Peoples-Jones to the Lions, I mentioned him last week as a good target for the Jets, but Dan Campbell and Detroit made it happen. I think that will be a sneaky good addition for them.
The deal that annoyed me the most was the Vikings trading Ezra Cleveland for just a 6th round pick. Cleveland has given up just 10 pressures on 265 pass-blocking snaps and has become one of the better run-blocking guards in football. He also has experience at left and right guard and is only 25. Sure he was about to become a free agent, but If I’m the Jets I’m trumping that 6th with a 5th, I’d have sent a 4th for him.
Joe Douglas did meet with the media and he confirmed he had lots of calls but nothing materialised, he also said that he believes the Jets will need Lawson and Cook down the line. I imagine that only happens if we experience a few injuries, so hopefully not.
The one bit of good news to come out of Douglas’s press conference is the revelation that the team have started “informal” talks with the representatives of Bryce Huff over a new contract. As more players sign extensions with teams like Gary in Green Bay, the more the cost goes up. We need to get this done yesterday.
The Jets did make one more and we referenced the possibility in yesterday’s TJW.
35-year-old Rodger Saffold was signed to the practice squad in a flurry of roster moves:
Center Connor McGovern (knee), Guard Wes Schweitzer (calf) and defensive tackle Al Woods (Achilles) were placed on IR.
Defensive tackle Tanzel Smart and offensive tackle Dennis Kelly were activated to the 53.
Defensive end Jalyn Holmes and OL Rodger Saffold were signed to the practice squad.
There is a lot to unpack right there, but two thoughts hit you straight away.
With Joe Tippmann injured (at least as far as we know), the Jets don’t have a single centre on the roster right now.
Al Woods is going to be a much bigger loss than people think.
First on the Al Woods situation.
