โ๏ธ Good morning Jets fans.
I hope you're still riding that high from Sundays victory, apparently the Jets and New York football is back, have you heard?
I wasn't going to put out any more newsletters this week as I enjoy some family time in France, but my 2 year old crashed early thanks to too many crepes and my wife also crashed early due to a 2 year old who had too many crepes ๐
It's going to be stat pack light today as I just focus in on a couple of areas. Next week we'll get back to our normal bumper pack.
โ๏ธ According to his agent Brett Tessler, 11 year veteran offensive tackle Mike Remmers signed a new one year deal with the Jets yesterday and will remain with the team as a backup through the rest of the season. The Jets released Connor McDermott to make room for Remmers.
๐ญ Duane Brown on the 4-2 Jets: โWe have a lot of guys here that don't care about what's been said in the past about this organization. We're here to write our own story - and so far, it's been a pretty good one. We're just trying to take it one week at a timeโ
๐ญ Vinny Curry on Quinnen: โI told him before that (GB game) he was having a pro bowl season. But I think after yesterday's game we all can agree he's having an All-Pro season. Listen, I honestly think there's potential there for him to be Defensive Player of the Yearโ
๐ Robert Saleh said he spoke to Elijah Moore and that everything was fine. Moore tweeted out some frustrations after the Jets win in Green Bay after the 2nd year player received 0 targets. Coach Saleh out it down to Moore being a competitive guy who just wants to contribute to the team. I can understand the frustration, bit I don't agree with airing that dirty laundry in public. It offers a negative distraction while the team is finally enjoying a period of sustained positivity.
๐ Former Jets wide receiver Robby Anderson is on the move, being traded from Carolina to Arizona in exchange for a 6th round pick in 2024 and a 7th round pick in 2025. Anderson is a bit of a one trick pony now, but with Kyler Murray I wouldn't bet against him doing that trick well, especially if Marquise Browns injury is as bad as first feared.
๐ As mentioned in the intro, this is going to be a short and sweet stat pack today, but I did want to get something out there following that statement win in Green Bay.
I have decided that going forward I won't be posting the PFF Grades. I've had a love hate relationship with PFF over the years and while I believe some of their statistics are very helpful (and I'll continue to share those), their grading system is extremely flawed.
Here are the two reasons I won't be sharing the grades going forward and why you won't lose anything by not reading them:
Quinnen Williams had 6 pressures, 2 sacks, 3 QB hits, 2 Tackles for a loss and was given a grade of 64.5. That's worse than Solomon Thomas who recorded absolutely nothing in his 19 snaps.
Duane Brown allowed 0 pressures, 0 sacks, had a pass blocking efficiency of 100% - but was given a pass blocking grade of 52.5 which is lower than Jon Runyan of Green Bay who allowed 4 pressures.
The PFF grading adds nothing to the evaluation of an NFL game.
Saying that there are stats that help us. So let's get into a few of those.
Offensive line
Green Bay got home for 2 sacks on Sunday but the offensive line weren't responsible for either. The first was given to Zach himself who ran back into a defender, the second was given to C.J Uzomah.
Not only is the offensive line starting to create holes in the run game, it's starting to gel in terms of pass protection. It wasn't a great day for Zach, but the line largely did their job. Zach needs to improve his internal clock and when he does that, good things will happen.
Overall there were 6 pressures registered against Wilson yesterday and here is where they were attributed:
Alijah Vera-Tucker - 2
Nate Herbig - 2
C. J Uzomah - 1
Laken Tomlinson - 1
Pass Rush
The Jets have found a formula that works with their defensive line and long may it continue. Teams that can generate pressure without sending the house tend to do well. Jeff Ulbrich and Aaron Whitecotton have been using a lot of stunts recently and that causes teams to panic. The Jets have some of the best pressure numbers in football over the last 2-3 weeks. On Sunday they went to work, here are the pressures numbers.
Quinnen Williams - 6 pressures, 2 sacks
JFM - 4 pressures, 1 sack
Sheldon Rankins - 3 pressures, 1 sack
Bryce Huff - 2 pressures
Nathan Shepherd - 2 pressures
Jacob Martin - 1 pressure
Carl Lawson - 1 pressure
Bryce Huff now has 9 pressures in just 45 pass rushing snaps. I'm a huge Kayvon Thobodeaux fan, but Kayvon has 12 pressures in 105 pass rushing snaps, and many agree he's having a fine start to his career, so that's just to show how well he is playing.
I'm not too surprised that Carl Lawson had a quieter game considering he was constantly lined up against David Bakhtiari who has been one of the best pass blocking left tackles in football over the last few years.
Quinnen is just a beast, it didn't matter what Green Bay tried to negate his influence he worked through it. His snap count was back below 70%, so imagine what he'd have been able to achieve if he was in for more plays.
Coverage
The Jets are now allowing just 207.8 yards per game which is good for the 12th best mark in the league, they are also allowing just 1.3 passing touchdowns per game on average which is good for 13th best. That's with four new starters in the secondary. Like most units within the Jets, the secondary has evolved since week one and they now look like a unit that has the potential to dominate.
Sauce Gardner - 6 targets, 1 reception, 16.7% completion against, 8 yards allowed, 3 pass break ups
Michael Carter - 9 targets, 5 receptions, 55.6% completion against, 30 yards allowed.
D.J Reed Jr - 4 targets, 3 completions, 750% completion against, 50 yards allowed.
Brandin Echols - 2 targets, 1 completion, 50% completion against, 25 yards allowed, 1 touchdown allowed.
Jordan Whitehead - 3 targets, 3 completions, 100% completion against, 28 yards allowed.
Lamarcus Joyner - 1 target, 0 completions.
Kwon Alexander - 3 targets, 1 completion, 33.3% completion against, 8 yards allowed, 1 pass break up.
C.J Mosley - 6 targets, 5 completions, 83.3% of completions against, 23 yards allowed.
Quincy Williams - 10 targets, 9 completions, 90% completion against, 82 yards allowed.
I don't get caught up on the completion % against linebackers considering those tend to be short throws where the backers have no chance of breaking it up, their job is to just bring the ball carrier down. It's the yards that are important there. Quincy struggled a little bit but that wasn't overly unexpected, Kwon continues to be one of the better pickups of the off-season.
Here are some other statistics I thought you may find useful:
Zach Wilson was just 1-7 when under pressure.
On 13 of the Jets 23 plays on first down, they played with 2 TEs on the field. On those plays they averaged 5.22 yards per rush.
The Jets now have 48 sacks + QB hits over the course of 6 games, that's good for 3rd in the league. Over the last 3 games we've had 31 which is good for #1 in the league.
Over the last three weeks the Jets are allowing 15.7 PPG (2nd) and have 5 interceptions (1st).
According to a new ESPN metric called โOpen Scoreโ which tracks how open receivers are on targeted and untargeted routes, Elijah Moore is 33/98, so well above average. The Jets do need to find a way to get Moore the ball, for no other reason than him being a playmaker and the team being better with a more balanced approach.
Sauce Gardner has played 40 man coverage snaps this year according to SI, in those 40 snaps he's allowed 1 catch for 6 yards, which is the best record in football for cornerbacks.
Whew!! Lots to chew through and digest!
First: I tell me classes constantly about a misattributed Mark Twain quote: There are three kinds if Lies:
Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics.
That PFF data seems like noise (to be kind).
Love the break downs and the data pools!
France? Bon Temps, young man!!
Good stuff. Enjoy France! One question - do we think Quinnen and others benefit from the rotation policy? I thought the 30/35 snaps thing they said in the Summer was ridiculous but 70-75% of the snaps at close to 100% might be good for them ? Im not a close enough football watcher to know the impact of how all of that works but I can certainly see some benefit. While Q, Lawson, JFM are the best of the bunch, the backups are pretty talented and I can see the rationale for continuing with this policy.
Either way, Q is having a great start to the year. Hope it continues us and him.
