Good morning! ☕
Both sides of the ball can’t win every single day. When you have two units as strong as the Jets have, they’re going to share the spotlight.
Yesterday the Jets offence took some knocks, there were drops and there were plenty of poor snaps, with Robert Saleh confirming “something is obviously going on” with Joe Tippmann as the second year man struggled with the snaps.
🟢 Here are some camp notes before we focus on a few smaller stories further down.
Allen Lazard has been excellent to start camp, but he dropped a pass from Aaron Rodgers which was then picked off my Chuck Clark, as punishment he was removed straight away. Remember John Simpson was removed last week when he had a false start, the standards are at an all-time high.
Joe Tippmann is struggling big time with his snaps. His shotgun snaps are consistently high and he’s even struggled with the QB/OC exchange, it caused some frustration from Aaron Rodgers. The Jets need to get Nick Mangold in camp to work with Joe, you don’t want this to become a mental block like when Jon Lester just couldn’t throw to first base.
Javon Kinlaw has put on 35lbs of lean muscle in an effort to be able to stand up to double teams more, he is one huge human being.
It was a rough day for the offensive line, not only did Joe Tippmann struggle with his snaps, but Aaron Rodgers was sacked on at least 3 occasions.
Jeremy Ruckert left practice with an injury, but made it back onto the field so there’s nothing to be concerned with there.
⚪ Quote of the day goes to Tyler Conklin talking about Aaron Rodgers
“You try to see the game through his eyes, but it’s not easy because “he’s the Oppenheimer of football.””
🟢 NFL have continued their countdown of the top 100 players in the NFL and the Jets had three players come in between picks 30-40:
#38 - Sauce Gardner
#37 - Quinnen Williams
#32 - Quincy Williams
I’m a huge fan of Quincy but I’m not sure I would put him above his brother, but that does give him some bragging rights for the next year. Here’s what the NFL had to say about Quincy:
Quincy now owns some bragging rights over his brother Quinnen thanks to their rankings. The Jets linebacker enjoyed the finest year of his career in 2023, grading out defensively at 81.1, per PFF, which is 25.9 higher than his previous top mark. His leap in coverage was even better, as his 88.7 grade was a 38.7-point improvement. Williams, a first-time All-Pro, was the team’s second-leading tackler with 139. He also caught his first-ever interception, forced two fumbles and had 10 passes defensed.
There was no sign of Haason Reddick on Monday and that’s notable from a financial perspective.
Per the CBA, if a player misses 6 practices then he is liable to be fined 15% of his pro-rated signing bonus, it’s an optional fine but Robert Saleh said he assumes that the Jets will fine Reddick for missing camp.
What that means is that on top of the $50k a day he’s been fined, he’ll also be hit with another $300k. So if you combine that all together, his fine is now up to $600k. Well $700k if you include the $100k he lost for missing minicamp…well actually make it $950k as he also had a $250k workout bonus that I believe he forfeited.
The Jets can also continue to fine him an extra 1% on that pro-rated signing bonus for each day he misses, up to 25% in total.
