Good morning!⭐
Derek Carr has returned home after visiting with the Jets over the weekend and now we sit and wait. I’ve spoken to a couple of people who said the visit was a big success and there was plenty of positivity flowing.
I expect Carr to take another visit this week, probably with the Panthers. The Saints are a bit contender here, but the Jets are right there. We have a lot to offer as an organization and I’m sure that didn’t go unnoticed with Derek.
Today I wanted to look at the potential of bringing George Fant back.
🔥 Jeff Darlington had some details on Carr's visit which went into some detail about how the Jets feel about the veteran QB. According to Jeff, the team believes that Carr is a great player who could lead the team to a championship, a notion that I happen to agree with.
Don’t expect any decisions to be made quickly however. His brother David confirmed “He wants to do his due diligence and see as many places as he can to get a feel for what the best place for him will be” - Time to play the waiting game. But Mike Garafolo confirmed the earlier reports “all parties came away feeling good about a possible fit”.
💼 The Jets announced the hiring of wide receiver coach Zach Azzanni who worked with new offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett in Denver last year. Miles Austin who served as the Jets receivers coach last year is facing a year out of the game for violating the NFL’s gambling policy. Azzanni worked under three different coaches in Denver, which always looks good on a CV. We’ll get into Azzanni’s career tomorrow.
🦅 The Philadelphia Eagles have interviewed former Jets safety Jim Leonhard in relation to their vacant DC job. Jim was always one of my favourite players during the Rex Ryan era and he worked as the DC for the Wisconsin Badgers, so this is the logical next step.
⚡ Chargers defensive coordinator Renaldo Hill is reuniting with Vic Fangio in Miami as their defensive pass-game coordinator.
🐴 We’ve touched on it recently, but it was officially confirmed that Rex Ryan did interview with the Broncos this weekend. If Rex Ryan and Mike Westhoff head to Denver, I may have to pay a little attention to the Broncos next season…just a little.
🦁 Former Lions OC Jim Bob Cooter is set to be hired as the new Indianapolis Colts OC. Cooter acted as the passing game coordinator for the Jaguars last year and helped Trevor Lawrence break out.
Last off-season George Fant was coming off the best year of his career.
Despite moving to left tackle following the injury to Mekhi Becton, Fant allowed just 1 sack and 18 pressures on nearly 600 pass-blocking snaps. That pressure rate ranked Fant as a top 10 tackle in football and while his run-blocking was only ever average, his ability to protect the blindside of the QB ensured he was highly valued.
