Apologies this is a little rushed. But with it being a 1am game I woke up at 5am to watch on delay so I had time to put something together before starting an important work event in the Japan market this morning at 9:45am

With a horrendous, embarrassing performance that all but guarantees that these 2 teams will not appear in a Monday night game for a long time, the NY Jets did everything in their power to lose last night and the officiating crew made sure of it.

If this officiating crew isn’t suspended and / or fined, then we know football is fixed.

Or could it be a case that the officials just don’t respect the Jet organization.

Dam the fines, Woody, Glenn or Mougey have to publicly complain. Get the league’s attention, put it out on social media, a telephone call is totally inadequate.

You want to stop this nonsense, make all calls reviewable.

As far as the Jet team on the field, half should refuse their game checks. Accepting their checks is legal larceny.

As far as the coaching staff goes, Wilks is showing why he gets fired so often. He does not put this team in a position to win. If he isn’t gone by season’s end then you know he has very questionable pictures of someone in Florham Park.

As far as Glenn and his preaching goes

15 penalties/ 13 accepted for 101 yds

Another failed 4th down attempt

Another drive killing personal foul penalty plus another one that kept a Fin drive alive.

3 more fumbled lost.

Unfortunately Fields is not the future.

Presently Jets only team in NFL without an interception or fumble recovery. Jacksonville has garnered 13, not a misprint, 13

Is it possible that in the history of the Jets they have never fallen on an opponents fumble. A ridiculous statement but at this point believable because can you remember the last one.

Beating the dead horse thoughts

Cutdown day, the Brigade wanted Jamaal Pritchett kept and Gipson gone.

Glen showing a bit of arrogance says the fans, the people who never played the game have no clue to what happens during practice.

Gipson is kept, Gipson’s fumble sparks a Jet defeat.

Gipson is cut but no Pritchett.

Kene Nawangue is the new kick returner but he is hurt,

Isiah Davis is used for kickoffs

The who is the returner merry go round keeps spinning in dizzying circles.

235 pound Braelon Allen is the new kick returner. Isiah Davis can’t be used because he is Hall’s new backup. What?

Allen takes the kickoff after the Fins score a TD as a result of an Allen fumble. What does he do, he fumbles. In fact in two consecutive carries he fumbles twice. That has to be some sort of dubious record.

Inquiring minds want to know, where’s Pritchett. Oh that’s right still on the practice squad.

Second half kickoff is handled by Isiah Williams, who, wasn’t he selling peanuts in the stands during the first half.

Isiah fumbles, Fins recover.

Then the Coup de’ Grace ( that’s French for ending a fallen enemy’s misery.

Peanut vendor Isiah calls for a fair catch on the two yard line.

Not a Dolphin within 10 yards of him or the intelligent thing to do. Let it roll into the end zone.

That attempted punt return one of the worst in NFL history. Knowing this coaching staff, Isiah will be in London in two weeks, not Pritchett

Presently 3 teams in the NFL who are 0-4. The Saints, Titans and J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS

The JETS currently have the second pick after the Saints

Mark on your calendar December 21st. Tighten up your chinstraps The Jets travel to the Caesars Superdome for the possibility to nail down the first pick.

A few tweets that were posted during the game.

From Connor Hughes, tweet before the half

I asked Aaron Glenn on Friday if the #Jets spent any extra time working on blitz pickups after what Todd Bowles did to them a week ago.

He bristled at me, saying it was "one game."

The #Dolphins seem to be doing a lot of what the #Bucs showed on film, and it's working. Second week in a row the Jets are struggling with blitz pickup.

From Damien Woody

Do the Jets know how to pick up a blitz?!

From Dan Leberfeld.

It's kind of unfair to be critical of Justin Fields. He gives you all that he's got, but the tendencies you are seeing were all over the film before he was signed, so why be critical of him?

Person unknown

Aaron Glenn knew how to talk the talk this summer, but this Jets team looks like a lot like so many of the others in the past 15 years. Sloppy, dumb, undisciplined

Craig Collins's avatar

The officiating crew should definitely be suspended, if not fired, and investigated for being bribed to fix the game. There were at least 4-5 blatant penalties against the Dolphins in the 2nd half and no flags, and at least 3-4 phantom penalties on the Jets.

I didn't realize that Allen had returned KOs since I missed the first half. I really wanted the Jets to draft Allen and was very happy when they did, but I'm sad to say that he sucks. Maybe one run out of 10 he'll have a good run, but for someone his size and strength, the goes down entirely too easily. He doesn't run over players or through tackles. He has dropped passes in the past, and now he's fumbling. Maybe it's time for him to be inactivated and bring Toalafili up to the roster and give him a chance.

I always thought that Glenn was dumb when he was a player. I didn't want him as HC, but was willing to give him a shot. He's done some good things, but his smugness and arrogance, along with his dumbness is going to be his undoing. I hope that he does some real soul-searching and looking in the mirror and wakes up. I don't care about him, but I do care about the Jets and the fanbase. If he doesn't wake up, start walking the walk, and seriously address the Jets' many issues, I hope he is fired at the end of the year, former Jet or not. He may be a good family man and person, and he has some good aspects as a coach, but his smug attitude like the media and fanbase don't know anything doesn't cut it. We can obviously see things that he can't or doesn't want to see. In short, he's delusional. At this point, unless I start to see a real change over the next couple of weeks, I'm going to root against the Jets for the first time in my life. I'm going to hope that they go 0-17 and are so bad that Woody will have no choice but to fire Glenn.

Steve B's avatar

They better be talking a QB firts pick next year. I still dont get why they invested so much trust in Fields. Dart is going to win again this weekend. He has "it" Feilds doesnt.

David Wyatt-Hupton's avatar

It's hard to see anything else at this point...but while I can't tar this new regime with old brushes, I'm ready for them to take an edge or offensive tackle...just to be sure you know ;-)

Phil's avatar

I can see an edge if they don't take a QB (though I think they will need one) but why an OT? I think Fashanu will be fine and from what we have seen so far far Membou is a stud.

I think last night was the first Jet game in which I was not at the game, or watching it on TV in over 40 years. Sad to say that I amnot sad I missed it.

My wife and I are in Morocco for our daughter's wedding next week. Even though I couldn't figure out how to watch it, I was not going to begin the game at 2:00 AM.

"Same old Jets" rings true from David's piece, articles, and the box score.

David Wyatt-Hupton's avatar

Have a great time in Morocco and forget the Jets even exist for a little bit, that would be my advice.

Unfortunately last night was the exact definition of same old Jets. It's sad but this is going to be a very long road ahead.

Ron Alexander's avatar

David, and really everyone here, please, go to YouTube and watch the Jets postgame show with Bart,Willie, Connor Rodgers and the host. Tune into Bart talking about Fields slow recognition that causes him to hold the ball. It’s spot on and as he holds the ball he keeps drifting back directly into the area the OT’s are directing the rushers. I loved Bart’s comment, “ the safest place is in the eye of the hurricane” Obviously he’s referring to the pocket. There were more than a few plays where Justin failed to step up and deliver the football in a timely manner that led to failed plays. He’s gotta be quicker. This is exactly why his two previous teams turned away from him. At this point he’s basically a more athletic Zach Wilson.

David Wyatt-Hupton's avatar

Yeah I did watch parts of that and they're right...but they're also not telling us anything we didn't already know. At this point unfortunately I think the processing speed is going to doom his NFL career, when he does process and there are occasions he does it well...well the results speak for themselves. Unfortunately the lack of consistency in his processing is where it all falls down, in college you get away with it because the windows are wider and one or two highlight plays tend to win you the game. Saying that, Fields isn't the biggest issue with this team right now.

Craig Collins's avatar

Congratulations on your daughter's wedding. I hope/pray that they will be very happy together and blessed with long, happy lives together. Safe travels!

Douglas Hunt's avatar

When Allen fumbled the ball at the end zone after a dominant drive, I concluded the Jets really are cursed. As a fan of 61 years, this is the first time I have uttered those words.

The defense does stink though - they need safeties that can tackle in the worst way. And can they throw one deep pass to Arian Smith this season? This dink dunk stuff allows the opposing D to stuff the box on them, which should open up the deep throws.

And something has to be done about the way the Jets are treated by the refs. The league has to step in. It’s insane.

Sam's avatar

Great work as always, David! I still have belief in Glenn, and I can feel how much he cares about this franchise. But the coordinators he appointed were poor in my opinion. I felt the same way in the summer, and that feeling hasn’t changed.

Wilks was fired as a DC by Shanahan after helping the 49ers make it to a Super Bowl. Shanahan is well revered in the league for the coaches he appoints. For him to sack Wilks like that, there must have been something he really didn’t like, which in my opinion is worrying.

Engstrand was next in line at the Lions to be OC after Johnson left. I thought at the time it was very strange for Campbell not to make the easy appointment. Was there something in coaching Engstrand he didn’t like the look of—maybe personality? Glenn was in the Lions’ building as a DC, but how much did he see day to day on the offensive side of the ball? Did he see a lot of Engstrand’s work? I worry now that Glenn just jumped at the opportunity when he saw that Campbell didn’t appoint him.

One question I have for you, David, and the rest of the comment page: is there a possibility that Glenn will be calling the defensive plays by the end of the season?

David Wyatt-Hupton's avatar

It's a great question Sam. You're spot on about Wilks and I think we spoke about it in the summer, that firing raised plenty of alarm bells. I thought he got the rough end of a deal in Arizona where he was set up to fail, but when coaches move around so much something tends to be amiss. When a coach is fired by someone like Shanahan after a SB run, well the questions get louder. I genuinely believe that he was brought in mainly for his overall experience and I wasn't against it at the time, but I think he'll be a one and done coordinator for us.

In terms of the play-calling, the sense you get is that Glenn doesn't want to go down that route because it opens up criticism that the defensive coach is spending too much time on the defense, basically what happened with Saleh. He certainly could end up calling plays, but I think it would need to get even worse for him to do that. He wants to be seen as a head coach who focuses on the whole team, so if he can avoid calling player...I think he will.

Daniel Mcsparin's avatar

I'm with you regarding Glenn and the suggestion that he'd want to take over defensive play-calling and that whole operation. If he learned anything from Campbell and his experience in Detroit, I'd think that he'd have seen how well it works to have that experienced coach on the other side of the ball who can, for the most part, handle all of the little leadership issues that come with being a coordinator and a defacto leader of the defense, especially when you, as a head coach, are relatively light on experience. I don't think he'd get rid of Wilks unless he is certain that the guy behind Wilks is ready to take an increased role.

I'd also throw out that firing the defensive coordinator isn't, exactly, a fix to whatever problems there might be. What exactly are this defense's issues? How can you fix them? What things is Wilks doing to fix the issues? Does Wilks see the issues? Is he trying to fix them? Why aren't his solutions working? Does Glenn have a different idea of how to fix the issues?

All of it amounts to a more complicated solution than we usually think. Aaron Glenn taking over play-calling likely doesn't change much. He'd be getting the same game plan, calling from the same defensive playbook, getting the same defensive coaching each week from his staff, and utilizing the same metrics to put together the game plan. None of that underlying stuff changes. You'd simply have a different person using the same information to call plays (and likely calling most of the same stuff). That doesn't usually fix your issue.

This isn't, even, a football-only thing. You can transplant that process across multiple situations. Replacing the head of something doesn't change the underlying mechanics and functionality of that thing unless the head comes in and changes everything. I'm not convinced Glenn thinks Wilks has a bad defense or is calling bad plays or anything like that. Maybe there are accountability issues, but we don't necessarily know that either. I think it's more likely that the players are still settling into a new scheme and getting comfortable with it. They'll probably improve as the season goes along and they'll learn a lot over the course of this season with Wilks.

Craig Collins's avatar

Glenn doesn't set the tone for the game plan. I have always thought that the game plan would either be determined by the HC or the HC in conjunction with his coordinators.

Daniel Mcsparin's avatar

It is. I'm sure he trusts the opinion of his coordinators, for the most part. We, really, won't know about those interactions (unless something goes wrong). If I had to guess, the kind of "game-plan" they had yesterday was to take the air out of the ball, offensively, by pounding it on the ground while playing it safe on defense, not taking many chances, and trying to keep everything in front of them. The Dolphins, for as bad as they have been, are an extremely explosive team. That was going to result in, perhaps, a few long drives. The game played out about how you would expect but for the offense making a number of mistakes that put the defense back on the field in bad positions.

I’m a lifer for the Mets and Knicks, too. ‘69 was it for me. I may never see another championship in my lifetime. I’m 73 and counting.

David Wyatt-Hupton's avatar

Yeah unfortunately if you're a NY sports fan...things are a little rough right now.

Turkeymike's avatar

You have a lot of nepo owners of NY sports franchises who don’t seem to be able to build a winning franchise structure. Cohen looks to be breaking the mold, current year notwithstanding. The Jets ownership however takes the prize in continued failure.

David Wyatt-Hupton's avatar

It takes real levels of ineptitude to put such a bad product on the field for such a long time. Woody Johnson will be a case study in how not to run a franchise.

Ron Alexander's avatar

Roy, We have a lot in common. I’m 73 and support the same teams. Hard to believe we are still doing it. We are the very definition of the quote most attribute to Einstein…..doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results🤦🏼‍♂️

Craig Collins's avatar

I hear, Roy. I'm 71. Thankfully, I'm not a Mets, Knicks, or Rangers fan. Even though I lived in NYC for 16 years as an adult, I grew up in North Carolina. Mickey Mantle was my hero, and my first football team was the Packers. I got to see lots of world series and NFL Championships and SB Victories. As you know the Yankees had several long stretches of bad teams, and I thought that they had choked away this season, but at least they have a shot to get back to the WS. My heart goes out to all you Mets fans.

I was never really a big NBA or NHL fan, so I haven't had to suffer with the Knicks and Rangers. I only watched hockey when I was young and for liked the Bruins because they had Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito and were really good, but never really kept up with it or watched them that often.

During the years I lived in NYC I did root for the Knicks when they had Patrick Ewing, and I think they won one championship while I was there, but never went to a game, or even watched one. Just followed them in the tabloids.

Craig Collins's avatar

I missed the first half last night because I didn't realize the game started so early. I turned it on right before halftime.

Based on what I saw in the 2nd half, I'm glad that I didn't have to suffer through the whole game. At this point, I'm very close to walking away from the Jets for good. They truly do seem cursed. Glenn may eventually turn things around, but by the time he does, I probably will no longer care. He's just too nice, to much of a player's coach. I'm a very positive person with my friends and my students, but cross me and watch out. If I were the HC of the Jets there would be a flurry of moves today including:

1) cutting Isaiah Wilson - after two first half fumbles, the one thing that he couldn't do on the 2nd half KO was fumble the ball. Anyone who has returned punts since high school should know that you never fair catch the ball inside the 5 yard line. He is obviously too stupid to be in the NFL.

2) I'd tell Wilks that he had two weeks to straighten the D out, and if not, his ass was gone. I'd take over the D myself. Wilks has shown throughout his career that he isn't a very good DC. He has players that were very good last year even following Saleh's firing who are playing like crap this year. It's his scheme or game plan or something, but the players are not in a position to succeed. There's no way the offense should be outperforming the D on the Jets.;

3) I'd move Davis ahead of Allen on the depth chart and unless both Hall and Davis got injured vs the Cowboys, Allen wouldn't see the field.

4) If Brownlee will be available, I'd make both Adams and Oliver inactive. I'd rather give rookie UDFA Dean Clark and rookie Malachi Moore a chance than watch veteran players miss tackle after tackle and be out of position.

5) I don't care who I had to inactivate for next week's game but Pritchett or the other returner they signed to the PS would replace Isaiah Wilson and be the new PR and KOR along with Davis. Pritchett would also get some run on offense.

6) I'd elevate Skinner or B. Smith to the roster and give him opportunities on offense, and Engstrand would be told not to call two straight running plays on 1st and 2nd down more than twice in a game. I don't care how well the Jets are running the ball. It's too predictable. There's little or no attempt at deceit on the part of the Jets... no gadget plays that I've seen. No screens, almost no roll outs or bootlegs, few designed runs for Fields. Fields running the ball is one of the few weapons they have and they need to utilize him more.

7) I'd resolve that the first person vs the Cowboys to commit a penalty was going to see the bench for at least a quarter, maybe a half, depending on what type of penalty and the game situation. Anyone fumbling the ball would be benched for the rest of the game and that includes Fields. I wouldn't tell the players, just do it if/when it happens.

If I could fine players for committing penalties and fumbling the ball, I'd do that too. The players would learn that I meant business. It would be no more Mr Nice Guy. They all might wind up hating me and I would lose the team, but they would play smart, solid football until I was fired.

David Wyatt-Hupton's avatar

Craig I always love reading your responses, along with many others here. I don't always respond through pure lack of time but I read every single comment that's made on TJW. This is without doubt one of your best. Dire moments cause for drastic measures, Glenn needs to make some changes before he loses the fanbase. Like you, I would rather see a rookie, a UDFA come in and compete than watch someone like Williams who is on his third team in two years come in and make those kind of mistakes. When he called for the fair catch I almost switched by TV off to call it a night (or a morning).

Daniel Mcsparin's avatar

They, actually, were making some great combinations offensively that included runs followed by boots/PA and it was really working. You can see what they're trying to do, there. I thought that the run game looked awesome. The passing game looked a bit worse than the run game but they were also doing good things, there. The blitz pickup wasn't always great (as has been noted by Bobber), but I am starting to think that there were issues getting all of their calls into the game in a timely manner. It, roughly, fits with what the broadcast guys were saying when they noticed the offensive line identifying the "Mike" so late into the play clock. It's as if the play is getting in late, causing all of the calls the offensive line and quarterback have to make rushed, which causes the pre-snap motions and formation stuff rushed (resulting in those formation penalties and false starts). I don't know, exactly, what would be the cause of that. I wonder about it a lot. There is so much awesome stuff that the dumb mistakes and process mistakes can drive you crazy.

Agree on Adams. He looked bad. He wasn't tackling. I thought Oliver was simply okay. I think he probably helps the defense run by being in the right place at the right time. Clearly, he isn't as talented as other dudes. He's a solid league-average type of player. He probably fills exactly the role you'd want earlier in the season. If you find yourself playing him whole games, you're in a bad place personnel-wise.

I went into some of the reality of the screen game in a previous post on a previous article. Essentially, there are fewer opportunities to run screens with running quarterbacks because teams will rush running quarterbacks differently (they'll rush in a more controlled manner with an objective of collapsing the pocket and keeping contain above all else). It just so happens that having a running quarterback is supposed to do what a screen game is supposed to do: slow down the pass rush.

Regarding Wilks; I'm probably less inclined to advocate his firing and more geared toward a solution that involves taking a hard look at what they're doing wrong and why the fixes aren't working. I'm not sure WHY they've been bad this year. I think the reason is multi-faceted. The tackling has been suspect, gap integrity has been poor, they've had trouble with their zone coverage from time to time (especially passing off crossers), and the pass rush has been underwhelming off the edge. Sure, there are probably some fixes for all of those things. I'm not sure what kind of fixes a head coach would want to implement. I'm sure they're constantly having their extended staff self-scout the whole operation to find ways they can improve, but I think the solution is PROBABLY closer to implementing those fixes than firing the coordinator. The coorindator should absolutely be fired if they refuse fixes, but I'm not sure that is the case.

You're pretty spot on regarding the specials comments. Isaiah Wilson did a really good job of getting himself cut. Pritchett probably will get a chance sooner rather than later. I'm not sure I'd suggest he needs to play more on offense considering he doesn't exactly fit what they're trying to do (he can't, really, block), but I think he's earned a shot at return duties, for sure. Plus more Isaiah Davis, in general. He's great.

Craig Collins's avatar

I hate I missed the offense looking so great in the first half except for the fumbles and penalties.

I think Engstrand is taking too long to decide on what the next play will be. I remember in preseason and I think the Steelers game, they got some delay of game penalties and had to burn timeouts on other occasions to keep from getting a delay of game penalty. That’s inexusable, and has to be solely on Engstrand. Maybe he needs to come up with numerous scripted play series that he can use to help him get the call in quicker. I think you’re right that’s what causing all the confusion, and last minute chaos, and results in penalties.

In terms of screens, I was talking more about WR screens where they’re in trips. In the Jets case, Hall could be one of the 3 receivers in trips and Davis could be in the backfield. Maybe Taylor could be the other receiver. I realize that he may be struggling just to get the plays they use routinely run correctly, but imo they need to do something more to keep opposing Ds off balance, give them different looks to figure out.

With regards to Oliver, I watched him pretty closely in the 2nd half as I had been wanting to see him play to see if he could be any better than MC II has been. I saw him whiff badly on 3-4 plays that broke the Jets back where the Dolphins scored or eventually scored. He was bad. He may have been proper position, but he whiffed badly on his tackle attempts.

Pritchett isn’t going to be a blocker, but the Jets need another receiving option. Reynolds and Lazard aren’t it. Pritchett can get open and he has good hands. That’s why I think one of Skinner or B. Smith need to be elevated and play as well. Opposing Ds know that they don’t have to worry about Lazard or Reynolds. IMO Fields has to start looking at other receiving options first, and make Wilson the 2nd read/option. Until opposing Ds have someone else to worry about, I don’t think the offense will truly click. Throwing more to Taylor helped last night. Breece should get more passes thrown his way as well. Maybe just using them and A. Smith more will do the trick and they won’t have to elevate one of the rookie WRs, but Isaiah Wilson needs to be cut and someone else given a shot as the returner imo.

Mike Z's avatar

You got my vote Craig, it was pathetic.

Scott's avatar

I’m still in one game at a tie mode, not caring about the overall record, it’s the only way can watch. Last night was awful not even making SOJ level of play. I never complain about Refs but last night was out of control bad, I wanted AG to come unglued on them regardless of the result. That being said they beat themselves again. AG needs to cut bait with Wilkes and run the D himself, not what you want from your HC but needed here. I wish I knew who was making the personnel decisions every week is AG giving too much control to the coordinators?

I have zero confidence the Jets can win any games this year. The only positive was that Mason Taylor is starting to show progress.

Bobber's avatar

I must correct what I wrote.

Allen didn’t fumble twice on consecutive possessions. Luckily he was ruled down by contact on the kickoff, unluckily he was injured and sat out the game on the sidelines. Why was he returning kicks?

Fans screamed last year when supposedly Woody wanted Adams benched. Well, after last nights performance, he should be getting splinters up his ass on the bench.

He played the perfect matador on Achane’s touchdown. What is he afraid to tackle.

If I’m Woody and I hear any Jet coach use the wording good or good things this week, I would fire them immediately.

One of the biggest knocks on Saleh, his teams never seemed prepared to play, his record was atrocious with extra days to prepare.

I guess Glenn has the same coaching mindset.

You can’t tell me this crack coaching staff was prepared for what the Fins were throwing at them. And to make matters worse don’t they understand that they can make HALFTIME CORRECTIONS.

The Jets drafted Arian Smith telling us he will stretch the field. Kind of hard to stretch the field when you never throw it deep, great coaching.

Glenn this season 0-4 on fourth down, Aaron you are not Campbell and your team isn’t the Lions.

Can the Jets be 0-5 after next Sunday’s game against Jerrah’s Cowboys, definitely yes in fact they could be 0-6 once they play Denver in England.

What Aaron Glenn, Mougey and their staffs have put out on the field this year is a total embarrassment.

And yes Aaron they are still the same old Jets contrary to what you think and say.

But the biggest problem here is me, why should I care anymore, why should I bitch and moan. Nothing ever changes

It’s just not worth it anymore.

Hasta La Vista, my friends.

David Wyatt-Hupton's avatar

Where is the next win coming from? We couldn't beat a Miami team who are bad in every aspect and who lost their biggest offensive weapon in the third quarter.

Do we beat the Cowboys who just put 40+ points on the Packers? No way.

Do we beat the well coached Denver Broncos who have the #2 rated DEF in the AFC? No

Maybe we beat the Panthers, but they'll look at us as a win just as much as we look at them.

Bengals, Browns, Patriots...all arguably better than us.

Ravens? No chance.

That Saints game on the 21st like you say Bobber, playoff for the #1 pick

Steve B's avatar

Imagine in the last weekend in Spetember - a bit earlier then then usaul Octoer -taking about getting the number 1 pick

David Wyatt-Hupton's avatar

It's depressing isn't it, but it's our shared reality right now lol

Douglas Hunt's avatar

Great question - why was Allen returning kicks? And why did AG punt in 4th and 8 with 7 minutes left down by 2 TD’s?

Phil's avatar

I am glad that I wasn't able to watch the game. Even the 40 minute condensed version that I watch as I live overseas would be difficult to view.

Very disappointed with everything they have done so far. I know it's early for Glenn, however I was expecting more from him.

David Wyatt-Hupton's avatar

Right now I can see this being a carbon copy of the Detroit Lions 3-13-1 season that I wrote about last week. They started 0-8 and unfortunately can see the same for the Jets. Horrible to watch.

Phil's avatar

Agree though I think he will have to fire Wilks at the end of the season. I think Engstrand might have some potential

David Wyatt-Hupton's avatar

Yep, following that Detroit model to the T. After year one Detroit fired the veteran coach (Anthony Lynn).

Phil's avatar

Yes, just this time on the opposite side of the ball :)

Maine Thom's avatar

Clicked send too soon. Did Isaiah Williams really fumble a kickoff and call a fair catch on a punt at the 2? Wow!

David Wyatt-Hupton's avatar

He really did. I mean I have no idea what was going through his head. It was probably 1.5 yards out of the endzone.

Daniel Mcsparin's avatar

It looks like our favorite punching bags from the last two weeks (Brandon Stephens and Michael Clemons) were able to right the ship this week. Stephens was the second highest graded Jet (behind Quinnen Williams' 90 PFF grade) at 80, while Clemons was the third highest rated Jet at 76. Our tackles put up near mirror 74 grades (Fashanu slightly higher than Membou), while our tight ends put up near mirror 65-66 grades. Rounding out the top ten were Breece Hall (72), Garrett Wilson (74), and Will McDonald (69). Our eyes weren't deceiving us, as Tony Adams put up an underwhelming 48. I'd speculate (based on just watching the game) that Kiko Mauigoa, Carter II, Tufele and McGregor grade out in the high 40s, the interior offensive line (Simpson, Tippman, and Myers) and Cisco in the high 50s, Gardner in the low 60s, Fields, Oliver and Sherwood in the mid 50s, Reynolds and Lazard in the low 50s, and Isaiah Williams grades out as turd-sandwich.

On an aesthetic note: those Dolphins "Rivalries" uniforms looked pretty awful. Couldn't they have, simply, worn the throwback uniforms? That would've looked great!

I couldn’t agree more with you, David. I’m so frustrated - probably the most in my 56 years of loving our boys in green. I’m starting to think my Easton High School football team in Easton PA (which is currently undefeated) could beat the Jets. Yes, the refs were horrendous in their calls (or lack of them), but we did it to ourselves. Maybe Woody needs to start withholding paychecks for those that make stupid penalties! We can’t blame QB1 for his play - #5 also was amazing. Not sure what Aaron needs to do to get through to guys making a boatload of bucks that play like high school kids.

I think there are some teams over here in Europe who could give the Jets a run for their money. I do think that Aaron needs to start removing some people from the rotation so to speak. Tony Adams is having a horrible season, as is Michael Carter II, Clemons, Isaiah Williams needs to be cut immediately if you want to maintain some consistency after the Gipson cut. Unfortunately this team is a 2-3 win team at most, but there are some pieces on here who are playoff calibre, just nowhere near enough of them.

And on top of all the poor officiating, fumbling, penalties and lack of intelligence we once again are subjected to seeing Tony Adams stand there like he’s frozen in time at his 10 yard line and watch as the Dolphin RB DeVon Achane casually waltzes into the end zone 🤬How are some of the players on this team🤦🏼‍♂️

I'm really good with some of these players. Clemons again looked awful last night and he played more than Will McDonald. I get that McDonald is limited against the run but Clemons is limited full stop. I'd rather see a UDFA struggle out there than see Tony Adams and Michael Clemons.

I, actually, thought Clemons played pretty well. McDonald was used pretty well, too. I think the rotation on the defensive line is an attempt to limit the exposure of certain players (like McDonald in the run game). The longer the game went on, the more gassed the whole defense looked and it began to really show late.

I wonder how Mauigoa is evaluated. I thought he was active, fast, and in on every tackle. But I think he missed a few tackles too.

The game looked like it was moving too fast for him, at times. I thought he was solid, though. He made a few bad reads and got caught up in the muck a bit, but he made some plays.

The bad and the good.

The bad is evidenced by the team structure. Safeties are just below acceptable; DE depth is not existent and their ability to stop the run is weak; LB depth is also nonexistent; and the CB room is crippled by the replacement strategy for Reed. Not sure why CB Carter II is performing way below his typical work. Offensive line not as good as expected due to rookie OT, a center playing guard and a below average center. TE depth is suspect. WR room is barren except WR1. AG is a rookie coach and not good enough to win with this subpar mess.

The good: TE Taylor had a great game. Fields only has three viable targets- WR1, Taylor and Hall.

Same old Jets means they will find a way to win just enough games to lose out on the QB of their choice. It's a long season so I will be very surprised if this does not happen.
