Good morning! ☀️
We have some pressers to talk about today. Both Joe Douglas and Robert Saleh met with the media and surprisingly, it was Saleh who offered the better insight. Not on Rodgers, there wasn’t much to report there.
We’re going to quickly touch on a couple of topics covered by Joe Douglas, but then we’re going to get into the meat of the interview with Robert Saleh who offered comments on a number of current and potential players.
✈️ According to Josina Anderson defensive tackle Calais Campbell will be visiting with the Jets on Thursday this week. The delay in the visit is based on the owners meeting in Phoenix Arizona. Saleh, Douglas and Woody Johnson are all attending and are set to be back in New Jersey on Thursday.
📈 ESPN released their post free-agency power rankings today and they had the Jets at #16 with the trade of Chuck Clark being mentioned as the best under-the-radar move: “Clark's arrival was overshadowed by the Aaron Rodgers hysteria, but Clark will be a solid starter in the Jets' secondary. He's a relatively low-cost addition ($4.1 million cap) who will improve the back end with his tackling ability”.
⛔️ Joe Douglas was asked about exploring the Lamar Jackson market considering the Baltimore Ravens QB requested a trade in early March. However, don’t expect the Jets to show any interest: "It would be disingenuous and operating, negotiating in bad faith if we went down that path," he told reporters Monday. "Right now, we have our plan, we have our process, and we're sticking to that."
👍 Douglas did confirm that the Jets have interest in Odell Beckham Jr, Calais Campbell and Ben Jones. I’d love Campbell and Jones and think they’d make the Jets considerably better. I’m pretty lukewarm on OBJ, but I certainly wouldn’t turn it down if the price was right.
🗣️ Douglas on the Rodgers talks: “There’s been some productive conversations. We’re not where we need to be yet but I feel we’re in a good place. There’s no hard deadline. There’s not a ton of urgency from our standpoint but very optimistic.”
🧀 Packers GM Brian Gutekunst joked that he wanted all the picks, but also stressed "That's not a necessity," Gutekunst said regarding the Jets' No. 13 overall pick. "But at the same time, the value of the player, he's a premier player. So, I think getting premier picks back for that or players is important." - That first round pick isn't going anywhere.
🐭 When asked if he believed the negotiation could stretch into June, he said “Yeah, I think so", but have no doubt about it, they want it done by April for the draft picks. He continued "There's not much going on right now. So, I think it has to work for both parties, and we're both committed to figuring that out. It's really kind of in their court right now, so we'll kind of see where it goes."
Robert Saleh met with the media yesterday at the league meetings in Arizona and he covered a whole host of topics including Aaron Rodgers, OBJ, Zeke, Jones and much more.
Here are some of the best quotes from that media session and some notes. I’m always interested to hear what Saleh has to say, but like any coach, I appreciate he’s probably speaking in half truths.
It’s good to see coach in the offseason looking relaxed and minus his in season persistent stress, like a true dad just returned from vacation and about to hit the golf course ⛳️
It was a long media session that ran for 30 minutes, so I’ll do my best to whittle that down to some key points.
