Good morning! ☀️
As mentioned last night, I’m going to stick with the original plan for the newsletter today, even with the Aaron Rodgers news. We had an emergency newsletter last night to cover the details, so if you didn’t see that, head here to check out my instant reaction.
We are going to be covering Rodgers a lot over the coming weeks and months, so I hope you don’t mind me sticking with a draft prospect newsletter today, but we’ll use the quick throws as a quick recap.
We’ll talk about the McGovern deal quickly but if you want a deeper read on McGovern, I wrote this piece last summer for edition #147 and a lot of it still rings true, so it’s well worth a look.
We’re going to switch our focus to another prospect today and look at Karl Brooks, a defensive edge prospect who could be an ideal candidate to play defensive tackle for the Jets in an attacking front.
📸✍️ With the Jets adding Aaron Rodgers, the new-look offense looks a little like this. One of the best offenses on paper I’ve seen as a Jets fan. Now we all know games aren’t won on paper, but at this point in the off-season, it’s a start. The Jets Super Bowl odds fell from +1400 to +700 with the Aaron Rodgers news.
🤝✈️🧀 Here is a quick reminder of the deal, just in case anyone needs it:
Jet’s receive: Aaron Rodgers, pick No. 15, a 2023 5th-rd pick (No. 170).
Packers receive: Pick No. 13, a 2023 2nd-rd pick (No. 42), a 6th-rd pick (No. 207), a conditional 2024 2nd-rd pick that becomes a 1st if Rodgers plays 65 percent of the plays
🧐 There is a lot of chatter online about the Jets getting fleeced and I completely disagree with that. The only part of the deal that was a surprise was the 2024 pick being based on snap %. The swapping of the first-round picks tells me that the Jets are very comfortable with their draft board and likely have 4-5 offensive tackles rated around the same. If those two conditions were the requirement for getting a HOF QB, then it was worth it.
🎱 Could this deal look horrendous if Rodgers retires next year? Sure. But I have a feeling the Jets feel confident they can get two years out of Rodgers. We’ll continue to have more on this over the coming days.
