Good morning! ☕
Practice notes from the joint session with Carolina, some good quotes from Garrett Wilson, CJ has his say on Reddick and Clemons breaks the golden rule.
Time to get into the quick throws and then we’re going to take a look at a few players who could do with a good game against Carolina.
🟢 Defensive captain C.J. Mosley was asked about the Haason Reddick holdout - "Don't really have an opinion. He hasn't been here. We haven't really talked about it as a defensive unit. It hasn't really come up on our end ... So I mean no disrespect, but it's just something that that's not really our focus because we have to get ready for the season. "So when he comes -- if he comes -- we're going to be here. We're going to be the same people. You're just going to have to adjust and learn really quick on what we have to do. But if not, I'll just say it is what it is." Maybe the players are as tired as we are.
⚪ Garrett Wilson offered some thoughts on rookie Malachi Corley, who’s flying a little bit under the radar at the moment: "It's been super awesome to see his progress," said Wilson of the first-year player he and his teammates call Chi, pronounced "Kye." "Just the way he goes about things, the way he's understanding the playbook now and understanding these little things. You know, all of a sudden when you're a rookie at OTAs, everyone's watching, like, is he going to run the right route? Because I remember that was me just two years ago, right? So it's really cool to see his progression and the way he's wired."
🟢 This comment from Garrett really stood out to me. Of course you respect Aaron and you listen to Aaron and everything else, but you also have to be able to challenge him: "Aaron wants it done a certain way, but it's not all a one-way street," Wilson said. "You've definitely got to talk about it and be able to have some harder conversations where he's telling me what he wants and I've got to listen to that, and I weigh in on how I feel. And then we come to a decision together. It's kind of just spending time together and playing, you know? You start to build this chemistry, this understanding for how he goes about his and how I go about mine."
After not taking part against the Commanders, Aaron Rodgers was on the field in Charlotte to face the Panthers. Quinnen Williams sat out the session with a shoulder injury, but Head Coach Robert Saleh said he was not concerned and it sounds as though it was more precautionary. "We're not going to have Quinnen up today," Saleh said. "He's dealing with a sore shoulder, so we didn't feel like it was necessary to get him rolling. We're not concerned. If this was a game week, we'd be rolling, but no concern."
Mixed day for the offence. According to Connor Hughes Aaron Rodgers completed 15-24 passes for 2 TD and 2 INT. One of those interceptions came off a deflected pass that Allan Lazard should have come down with. Both touchdowns came courtesy of Garrett Wilson. Wilson thought it was a good session for the receivers - "It is always good to have someone else across from you," Wilson told reporters. "Competed today with a good team, they have a good cornerback room so for our receiver room it was a good day and a good experience for us to get out and see how we are stacking up. We started slow, which can't happen, but it is going to happen, and we found a way to bounce back and finish strong."
The starting offensive line looked good with Garrett Wilson praising their ability to move people. But with AVT, Tyron Smith and Morgan Moses on pitch counts, there was a lot of rotation which caused some consistency issues. The Panthers got four sacks, but three of them came with Tyron Smith off the field. I can’t state how important it is for the Jets to keep him healthy. So take as many days as you need to keep yourself healthy Tyron. But it was another session where the Jets starters dominated the LOS in the ground game.
After what was probably the most mild-mannered practice I can recall against Washington last week. We did get a brawl between the Jets/Panthers which was instigated by excessive celebration by the Panthers receiver who tossed the ball towards DJ Reed who was on the ground having been beaten for the TD. Reed didn’t like it, so he picked up the ball and threw it at a Panther and a fight ensued.
There was one player who broke the golden rule of no punches if a fight breaks out, and I probably don’t have to tell you who that was. Yep…Micheal Clemons.
I didn’t see much of the defensive side of the ball, didn’t seem to be shown much online. But according to the beat reporters it wasn’t the best day at the office for the Jets defence. They didn’t dominate as they probably should have, but that’s often the way in these joint practices, especially if you’re on the road. As Mosley pointed out - "Practices are cool when you're at home, but when you're away, you have to adjust to certain things, and you don't get the schedule that you would when you're getting ready for practice," Mosley said. "I try not to make a big deal about it because I am at the point where I am not even playing in preseason games, so theses joint practices are like my gamedays."
Most important part - No reported injuries!
We saw some really positive performances last week, some of which we’ve managed to highlight through the week. Some of the guys who needed a good game against Washington didn’t really get it.
