the Jets have done a lot of stupid things these last few years and signing Bhaktiari would be the topper. Having lived the Mekhi Becton experience one would assume they would know better than to bring in a guy that spends more time at the hospital than on the playing field. Yup, Aaron will say “ I want him” and JD will say “yes sir”! Done deal. And yes, this would be so Jet like!

Can’t see Baktiari playing on Met Life Turf or playing for Keith Carter, Jets don’t need another injury prone project..Reference signing players, I don’t have a handle on CAP inflation and current player values. Of course the overriding problem is that I am cheap. I like Whiteheads durability, but not much else. . Jordan made 8 million last year, I would offer 4 million or Half Price. Four million, is my magic price, 4 million for Jefferson ( hefty raise ) , 3 year deal for Ashtyn Davis averaging 4 million ( Brant Boyer Lobby ) . 1 year for Chuck Clark for 2 million with incentives that can reach 4. What is interesting is my perception of the market, my constant over valuation of Jet players, and what the market actual is. We will see in March. Combine coming up in a week

J/O, of course not. It’s funny how it’s so obvious to us yet would any of us be shocked if it happens?

You need to limit the influence of Rogers on roster building after last year’s fiasco. Bhaktiari is owed 20.9 million this year, for me that’s crazy money. But if you’re making 20 million a year, what kind of money do you settle for, after a major injury ? Or why play it all, players have the power to walk, more now than ever.

Agree. Who would pay 21 million for a player who has not been able to stay in the field for the last 3 years. If he was and played

Time for JD to put on his big boy pants and tell both Woody and Rodgers, I’m the GM and my contract says I make all the decisions.

If Woody doesn’t like it, he has two options. Let JD be the GM or fire him.

If he fires him, very doubtful a reputable NFL executive would want to come in to take constant orders from the owner and aging quarterback

Woody’s options would be another Mr Coffee or Idzik type or a previously failed GM.

I think the team would be better served looking for a healthier LT. If either Bakhtiari or Smith were considered, a 1year prove it deal ONLY. When u need 2 starters a backup tackle and you are eating dead cap at 16 million, there are challenges.

Michael, I agree. The key is would Smith? He may look for a two year deal maybe with the idea of not moving from team to team so quickly. I get the feeling Rodgers will stick around for the 3025 season so that matches up well. Bhktiari should even be a consideration in any way shape or free. He wouldn’t last half the season on our turf.

David, first off Happy Birthday to the Mrs.. She has to be a great wife to put up with you being a Jet fan and for you writing a Jet column.

I think all of your posters here who are married, there wives suffer from some form of Post Jet Dysfunction Syndrome, attributed to the fact that their husbands are Jet fans.

To you Mrs. Hupton, 🎂🥂💍.

Based on him missing 41 of a possible 56 games the last 4 seasons and his age 32, is Bakhtiari really an option even on a minimum prove it contract.

Let’s leave the opinion of certain people in the Jet organization out of the equation, would any winning football team actually sign a player with an injury history as this one and at his age.

Whitehead misses too many tackles and gave up 7 td passes to lead all NFL safeties this past season., hopefully Clark has recovered from his injury, him plus Ashtyn Davis could possibly be an improvement. There is also the draft.

Bobber I think you mean 41 of 66 possible games with Bakhtiari. I guess that means you're ruling out Tyron Smith as well. He's a year older than Bakhtiari and has only played 33 of 66 possible games the last 4 seasons, but he did play 13 games last season.

Expand full comment

My bad, my math horrendous.

I never looked at Smith’s injury record.

My concern is Rodgers and Hackett badgering Woody for Bakhtarie and then Woody getting involved trying to keep Rodgers happy.

So far all of the Jet Lambeau Leapers have been busts including Rodgers.

Rodgers if he doesn’t get injured in 2024 can be a positive maybe Lazard also. But I think the Jets have to look elsewhere for offensive line help and get off of the Green Bay Merry go Round

No problem, it was an easy typo or mistake to make. I couldn't agree more about getting off of the GB Merry-Go-Round.

Happy Birthday to your wife! With as much time as you spend watching and writing about sports, she deserves today!

I would only sign Bakhtiari as a last resort. He's good when healthy, but rarely healthy. I prefer Tyron Smith. He's a better player when healthy, but is a year older and has only played in 33 of 66 games over the last 4 years. My second choice would be rolling the dice on Jonah Williams. He has played both LT and RT and had arguably his best season last year. He's younger than either Smith or Bakhtiari and I don't believe has had the injury issues that the other two have. Neither Smith nor Williams may want to sign with the Jets however (and who could blame them?), so Bakhtiari may be the only choice.

Jefferson should definitely be re-signed, but no to the other three.

we should do a deep dive on Jonah Williams. I seem to recall a lot of less than positive chatter on him.🤔

Expand full comment

I agree. From what I have read and heard, this past good season of his is a real outlier.

Expand full comment

It may be just an outlier, but there's at least a chance that the light finally went on for him.

Expand full comment

You could be right. Bringing him in to kick the tires would just be good business sense.............but we are talking about the jets, lololololol

Expand full comment

I agree, although I hate the term "deep dive" as much as I hate the term "unpack" info. He hasn't been very good in his career, and perhaps it was the threat of being traded or released if he didn't move to RT earlier, that made him have such a good year. But if it wasn't just an outlier, he's young and healthy and could be pretty cheap.

Give your lovely, saint-like wife my best wishes on her birthday. LOL And about David Bakhtiari.........no thanks. The Jets don't need a Duane Brown redux, lol.

Happy Birrhday to (i'm sure) a woderful person and wife. The crowd yesterday at the end of the Ranger/Isles game was wild and eletric - great Ranger comeback. When the jets win thier home playoff game next year the same will be true !

Happy birthday to your wife!

On the bhaktiari front is he going to be willing to sign with the jets and play on the MetLife turf?

He’s been an outspoken critic of turf fields and supposedly refuses to play on them. But he has been particularly outspoken about the state of the MetLife turf. Hard to see him signing with the jets unless something changes with the turf.

Expand full comment

Based on how many games he misses, I would say he "refuses" to play on any type of field.

Expand full comment

Richard, Thanks for this info! I didn't realize that he had been an outspoken critic of turf fields or outspoken about the state of the MetLife turf. Thankfully, that will probably keep him from signing with the Jets and they'll be forced to look elsewhere.

Either that or it may force them to actually get decent quality turf in place

Given his injury history and his reticence to play on the Met Life turf, perhaps we may call this a blessing in disguise!

David and family, I hope you Enjoy the birthday.

The meadowlands will have real turf by 2025 for the World cup games. It would be fabulous if the Giants and Jets decided to do this now after 150,000 fans visited to see the outdoor NHL games last weekend.

I was invited to go but I live in Maine and decided I did not want to drive down and sit outside in the cold for hours at my age. But my brother and his daughter went- it was her first hockey game- and what a game to see. Wow! I am way too happy with the Rangers to focus on the Jets today.

Denise, from all reports the grass sod is only a temporary thing to accommodate the ⚽️ people. Management feels it’s not sustainable due to all the other events they host at Met Life!

Expand full comment

Unfortunate indeed

Expand full comment

Here's a concept...don't host a bunch of other events. It was built for two PROFESSIONAL football teams. They deserve the best and healthiest surface to play on that would keep their players healthy. Forget the other events. The Giants and Jets should be adamant about that and both threaten to leave if the change to grass isn't permanent. Isn't there a professional soccer team in the NY/NJ metropolitan area? Wouldn't they prefer a grass field as well?

Expand full comment

Well…..jointly owned by jets and giants so they could have grass if they so choose.

Expand full comment

yeah, Ideally your spot in. But we know that’s not the way it will play out. The money is always the winner. 👍

Unfortunately the only green isn’t grass but greebacks. Curious, is Met Life stadium jointly owned by the Jets and Giants or another entity. Too lazy to google at the moment!

Expand full comment

The idea is great but doesn't work with the way that stadiums are financed and built. They leases the land from the state and I imagine there are strings attached to that agreement. It was privately funded, but the muscle that it takes to get something like that built takes a number of concessions to the local community. Those concessions are often the ability to hold events that aren't football games at these huge stadiums because, otherwise, those stadiums are going completely unused for half of the year. It's not a particularly great use of real estate, honestly, even though the land is technically being leased and you're technically making money from it. The city, state, and local community would be leaving a ton of money on the table if they didn't lobby hard for those extra events. Honestly, I wouldn't be opposed to drastically smaller NFL stadiums that mirrored the kind you have in the UK. Sure, there are a few really big ones that are mostly used by the major Premier League teams, but most of the other stadiums range from 10k-30k in capacity. By contrast, NFL stadiums, at their smallest, are around 60k in capacity. It's an interesting discussion, either way.
