Good morning! ☀️
Is this week dragging for everyone else or is it just me? Thankfully the Rangers have secured a playoff spot, the Mets start tonight and the Knicks are coming off the back of a big win against the Heat. So there is plenty of sport to keep me preoccupied.
Out of interest, drop the teams you support in the chat below, I’m always intrigued by the mix when it comes to NY sports.
Today I’m going to take a question from last week’s mailbag and expand the answer to look at the potential of moving back in the draft. I’m going to look at doing another positional round-up early next week like the defensive tackle one I released on Monday, so if you have any positional preferences, let me know.
🔴⚫ Calais Campbell is off the board. The veteran defensive tackle was due to visit the Jets today, but he never got to New Jersey. Instead, he signed a one-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons following a 40-minute conversation with Arthur Black, their owner. Apparently, Black sold him on the vision he had for him in terms of leadership and work in the community.
🙊 One thing I will say is that I’m in favor of Woody Johnson not being allowed to speak to the media again. On Tuesday he said the Jets were “anxious” about the Aaron Rodgers deal and while he tried to add context that we’re looking forward and we “have a plan”, admitting you’re anxious in a negotiation is never a good thing. Never.
🚨 Mike Florio of PFT said this yesterday which is likely just based on what the Packers GM said at the owner’s meeting: “The holdup had been that the Packers were adamant on getting the 13th overall pick in this year’s draft, and I think they’ve backed away from that,” Florio said. “The key this week was when Brian Gutekunst, the GM of the Packers, said ‘We’re not necessarily going to get a first-round pick.’ That to me was a major concession, acknowledging they’re no longer demanding 13 overall in 2023.”
⛔ With the Sacramento Kings securing a playoff spot in the NBA this year, the Jets now hold the longest playoff drought in professional American sports having not been back to the post-season since 2010.
Today I’m going to take one of the questions from last week’s mailbag and expand on it as it’s a very interesting question.
David Bishop - “If we keep the 13th pick, shouldn’t we trade back? S, run-stopping DT and C are all positions where you can pick the best available later than 25”
There’s a lot packed into this question, so let’s break it down into segments.
