While we know it’s always about the money. In Kwon’s case, it could also be that the Jets want to see how Sherwood and Barnes do when the hitting starts. If Sherwood has progressed enough for Saleh’s liking then Kwon won’t need to be signed.
While it’s always about the money, in the NFL world it’s also about the cap. If Sherwood has advanced enough to supplant Kwon, it definitely would give the Jets a little more cap relief.
Cook is a totally different case. If Breece is really not 100% come September, then a veteran running back could be signed. Fournette would be almost an equally good pickup, maybe Hunt if he hasn’t lost much.
The problem with Cook is if the Jets don’t sign him then the Jets will be facing him twice a year as a Fin or a Pat. If Cook has lost a little, it could be lived with, if he is still as formidable as ever, he would become a problem.
Signing Cook would basically fit two Jet needs. Make themselves stronger plus stopping a division opponent from getting stronger
David, an early Happy Birthday 🎂or a few 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍷🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷
I think that you're right that the Jets want to see where Sherwood is in his development and what they have in Barnes and to a lesser extent, Malik Hall, Claudin Cherelus and Caleb Johnson. It could come down to cap relief/issues vs. being better and deeper at LB this season.
Good point about if the Jets sign Cook then they won't potentially have to face him twice a season with either Miami or NE. I prefer Fournette over Cook because I think he offers the Jets something they don't have, namely a power back, and I think he will be cheaper to sign.
I have mixed feelings about the Jets signing one of Cook or Fournette. If they do, that will mean less reps for Knight, Carter and Abanikanda and that probably one of them will get traded or released. Knight has a lot of potential and I think it would be a mistake to let him go. CarterI could bounce back and have an excellent season. I would prefer for the Jets to see how they do in TC in Hackett's offense and with supposedly better OL play. That said, if they are seriously thinking about signing Cook or Fournette, then the sooner they do it, the better in terms of their learning Hackett's system and developing timing and chemistry with Rodgers and the OL.
If they are planning on signing a veteran RB, I still favor signing Fournette over Cook, as I think he can be signed cheaper than Cook, and he depends less upon speed than Cook, and may have lost less than Cook at this point in his career. He's a great receiver out of the backfield and probably a better blocker in pass protection than Cook. Fournette has more receiving yards and receiving TDs in his six-year NFL career than Cook (2,219 & 7) vs (1,794 and 5), but Cook averages almost 1 ypr more than Fournette (8 ypr vs 7.3) and Cook has fewer receptions (221 vs. 312). Cook does have more rushing yards, more rushing TDs, and a higher ypc average than Fournette.
I've seen at least a couple of Jets players saying they'd love to see the Jets bring in Cook, but haven't seen any saying the same about Fournette. I don't know if that would have any impact on morale or the lockerroom, but hopefully it wouldn't either way.
I hope that they aren't even thinking about signing Hunt. He's lost more than Cook and has character issues.
I'm glad that you're going to take some time off next week to be with your newborn, your family from NZ, re-charge your batteries and to celebrate your birthday. Hope you have an awesome birthday celebration!
I think it's very much about the money. The Jet organization is usually pretty close-mouthed about things like this and no one really knows the $$$$ impact of AR's deal. Even so, given the nature of the season for the Jets, I think that Fournette would be the right choice. I know you can't always go strictly by the analytics, but both Cook and Hunt show downward trends pretty strongly. I don't think that JD wants to go past $4.5 million given the circumstances. I could be wrong, but it's just a feeling. And David, have a very Happy Birthday next week and say hi to your Kiwi relatives from all of us.
I actually like the idea of signing Cook! With Hall probably playing a more limited roll having a strong presence at RB1 would be ideal! The thought of MC as our top option is not one that gives me that warm fuzzy feeling I get from a ice cold🍺
Very good point, that Kwon can sign mid training camp without a problem, same holds true for RB Cook. The advantage is some of the younger guys like Travis Dye get more early reps. Assessing what you have.
I may be mistaken, but I don't think that Kwon signed last year until late in TC or maybe not even until TC was over and he was great.
I'm not sure that the same would apply to Cook or Fournette (I have zero interest in adding Hunt). Do they know this offense? Even if they have played in a WC system, if they haven't played in Hackett's version, the terminology will be different, some of the plays will be different, and most importantly there's getting the timing down and developing chemistry with Rodgers and the OL.
Correct Kwon signed during TC. Advantage of RB by Committee, is that new guys have an easier time assimilating into the Offense..What type of shape is Cook in ? Any lingering injuries ? Would a RB by committee help Dalvin ‘s metric’s significantly ? Kindly note , the Viking Offensive Line is much better than the Jets.
IMO this confirms my initial distrust of Cook's sincerity in being willing to come to the Jets. It definitely looks like he wants a big payday, and is using the Jets and perhaps the Pats to get more money from the Dolphins. There are no state income taxes in Florida and Miami is Cook's hometown. I would be shocked to the point of speechlessness if he were to sign with either the Jets or the Patriots, but if he does, it will be because he extracts significantly more money from either team to make up for having to pay state income taxes and not playing for his hometown team.
Good points about the advantages of RB by Committee helping whichever veteran RB the Jets sign and the Vikings' OL being better than the Jets'. Also good questions about what kind of shape Cook is in, does he have any lingering injury issues, and would being part of a RB by Committee help his metrics. As for the latter, if the Jets do actually use a RB by Committee rather than playing Cook most of the time, it may actually hurt his metrics as he may not get enough snaps to get into a rhythm/groove, although he should be fresher.
It will be interesting to see what they do and how things work out.
Before signing any RB the Jets medical staff would have to sign off so I’m not worried about any health issues. The players conditioning would also need to be evaluated because being out of shape often leads to new injuries
The money is fascinating, remember a month ago Dalvin was confident he would get 11 million ? Now his agent talking 8 million. There is no sincerity, the Jets are being played.. Signing Cook, makes no sense unless it’s under 4 million for the Jets. Dolphin offer could be less. In the world of low ball offers, the Patriots maybe the best option to reestablish Dalvin market value. Patriots running backs our big back Stevenson, and 30 year old Ty Montgomery, that smells of Opportunity.. Cook may wait for a catastrophic injury from a team, but these advanced analytics seem to have crushed Cooks market.

Do you mix wine with beer ?
Could two weeks of training camp be enough to see how good Sherwood is ?
hey David!
What he said!

Update: Dalvin Cook’s is ‘Not willing to accept’ the current contract offer from the #Dolphins, per @JeffDarlington
The Dolphins still have a contract offer on the table for Cook but he's hesitant to commit to their current proposal.
